The Food and Drug Administration could authorize a second Covid-19 vaccine booster early next week, according to two people with knowledge of the plan.

The move comes amid early signs that the U.S. could soon experience another Covid wave as the omicron subvariant, known as BA.2, spreads throughout Europe and other parts of the world. Other countries, including the U.K., Chile, Israel and Sweden, already allow for a fourth vaccine for certain vulnerable populations.

Earlier this month, Moderna asked the FDA to authorize a fourth Covid shot for all adults, following Pfizer-BioNTech's request for a second booster for people 65 and older. Both companies said protection from the initial booster weakened after a few months.

Experts are still divided on whether an additional dose of the vaccine is necessary for everyone, but many agree a fourth dose may eventually be needed for certain groups, such as older adults.

As of a few days ago, FDA officials had settled on giving Americans age 65 and older the option of getting a second booster of either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine. However, in recent days, as officials began seeing small increases in cases in parts of the Northeast, officials considered expanding eligibility to even more Americans, the sources said.

The New York Times, which first reported the news, said late Friday that the Biden administration planned to offer second boosters to Americans age 50 and older.

The FDA did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment.

The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are not expected to seek the advice of their advisory committees, known as the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, one of the sources said.

Once the FDA authorizes the fourth shot, the CDC is expected to weigh in.

The FDA has scheduled a vaccine advisory meeting for April 6, but the meeting will not hold a vote and is expected to focus on potential criteria for authorizing a variant-specific Covid vaccine, one person said.

They're still pushing this? I thought the near certainty of a severe recession or even a depression caused by Covid shit kind of scared them off but I guess not.

We're crashing this country with no survivors.

Ave true to Caesar.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later; with the virus constantly mutating and all.

It'll be kind of funny if there will be new line of untested mandatory vaccines once these stop working.
In this article it's not so clearly stated but this one by NPR says: "Administration officials say it's important to give people the option of a second booster as quickly as possible. The plan to offer it to people younger than 60 was made to ensure that more vulnerable people, particularly people of color who are more likely to suffer other health problems that put them at risk, also have the option of an additional booster."

It's exactly how the first booster went. First it's optional, then it's strongly recommended, then it's mandatory for work and life and if you don't have it the other two do not work. It's all so tiresome.

Still not vaxed. Still not dead.
Same.

On one hand, it's justifiable because each new jab supposedly counters whatever new Greek letter strain that's floating around. But it's still kicking the can down the road without making an lot of progress; and it wouldn't be such an big deal if it wasn't an occupational requirement.

I got 2 shots and I'm not dead, but I don't really care about this booster shit.

Also, if I die idc lol

Also, the airlines have walked back their mandates over the vax. I'm really doubtful this second booster will get off the ground or be anything other than volentary. If this post is to be believed, companies are still strugling with employment. They're not gonna flip the switch back on for the mandates. That's business suicide. Then again, we're in clown world mode currently so maybe they will.

I doubt the second booster will be tweaked, since the first booster was based off of the same (Alpha) variant as the original two shots. Pfizer smells money, but the public is growing less tolerant of having to keep getting shot every 6 months.

Plus, with more of the Pfizer documents leaking, I doubt they'll have nearly as many people lining up at their doors to get the vaccine.

Got an link for that?

But TWO boosters will surely do the trick!
The virus will just give up and stop evolving to make each new iteration of vaccines* useless after the 4th jab!

*assuming they are actually using updated viral proteins, which they very likely aren't
