I would rather have Pokemon just be extremely rare critters that weren't driving normal animals to extinction. Would explain better the thrall around them and why people have to travel over hill and dale to find and catch them.

Pretty sure that in normal Pokemon lore they just replace animals. After all, humans canonically eat some of them.

But then where did humans come from? With few exceptions, most humans there are extremely underpowered and frail compared to most Pokemon. At least having normal animals explains the presence of humans, and regularly eating something heavily related to Pokemon that can learn your language and talk back to you (in the case of Meowth and MewTwo) kind of sounds gross.

It's a Mon franchise. The entire point of the series is love and friendship between humans and superpowered animals. It's not super deep.

Also before you pull the "humans eat them how can there be love" card I'd like to remind you of the numerous animals irl that are both eaten and kept as pets.
