See, something about AO3 always rubbed me the wrong way. Some time back, around 2008, they were very vocal about creating a space that protects fanfiction writers from litigation and the like through education of companies about copyright and fair use. I remember seeing media studies conferences where the Organisation for Transformative Works was advocating itself and freedom of expression heavily. It was very American centric, but wanted to help anyone globally, based on just some volunteers who were academics who believed fanfiction writing was neither theft nor something degenerate. Good stuff in general.

But it became very clear early on they focused much on female American writers and their shipping and writing culture, and less on men and their writing culture. Once again, fine. Women were derided a lot for their erotic fanfiction due to reasons so the organisation focused on that. But when this was pointed out as early as 2010 and in 2012, the line kept being that they represented the fans and all transformative works. Over the years they fell into the trap of positioning themselves as the only ones allowed to speak on the matter. They also fell down the slippery slope of not wanting to stifle creativity and thus allowing more and more horrific things. At the same time they released this academic journal that contains so-called "peer reviewed" articles on fandom studies. These articles vary from horrific to barely scraping by quality, academically speaking, but they are presented as the authority on fans and repeat the same party lines over and over. Also, a fuck tonne of queer lgbtq+ safe spaces fanfiction is validation stuff.

It just all rubs me the wrong way. It's got to be tough to run a cultural juggernaut like the organisation and AO3 as part of that. I respect its foundings and its intentions. But I severely dislike the fact they are both an academic and cultural steamroller and refuse to acknowledge that.

ARABS GET OFF MY BOARD DEGENERATE FANFIC SITE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

meanwhile fanfiction.net is a real G. Never had a problem like this.
(Apologies for double posting, I'm on my phone and can't add quotes when editing)

AO3 was created in response to FF.net's porn ban/crackdown. From it's inception, it was supposed to be a place where anything goes, no censorship. FF.net has since reallowed explicit content if I'm not mistaken, but still.

The site will certainly be back, but this reinforces how you should just batch download shit. Series you like has 200 works, and maybe if you look closely 10% of that are half-decent retellings? There's a script that'll get them all as ebook files in five minutes, no reason not to. Archive everything, even with this, and do it locally if you're worried hosting services could feasibly get moralistic.

I like AO3 for allowing everything (albeit I'm not usually running into works that aren't text). It'd be so easy to start censoring, and you know that the current wrongthink comes to the chopping block long before actual gross underage stuff.

That being said, I was thinking about Ygallery the other day. They were autistic in their restrictions on female characters, although that did make them strong against the proto-pooners.

More prosaically, I remember them having a rule that explicitly stated they would delete any uploaded images that you'd drawn on lined paper. (There were a few more rules along those lines, but that's the one I remember. Not an artfag.) You don't usually see strictly-enforced quality standards in user-uploaded smut archives like that, and certainly not today.

I remember a few indignant flounces from artists who were confronted with anything but asspats for the first time in their lives. Hypocritical from me as a completionist and a free speech enthusiast, but it's nice to see that happen now and then.

If they fucking want content moderation for shit they don't approve of, they'd better be willing to sacrifice their entire Black Butler fanfiction collection because 90% of that shit is an 11 year old boy having sex with an adult.

plz, I need this
Lot of good fuckin stories I haven't read yet but there's 20,000 and I can't read them all in one night

I like AO3 because it has a lot of procedural TV show fics that aren't even about fucking. I like reading crappy midseries NCIS fics when my brain isn't working right. It's absolutely the literary equivalent of potato chips, but I like it, and it is uncomplicated. Bonus points if Ziva or Gibbs die.

But the site itself is an absolute slash pit of degeneracy. The "omega" shit especially needs to see the authors pilloried. (in minecraft)

The internets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of semen and when the drains finally scab over, all the coomers will drown. The accumulated filth of all their cooming and shlicking will foam up about their waists and all the e-whores and horny-bois will look up and shout 'SAVE US!'...and Slobbermutt will look down and whisper 'No.”

It's not just smut they banned on FF.Net they also removed innapropriate relationships fanfics.

It also appears to have bought services now from cloudflare to deal with the attack, but once it verified it gives 400 error.

Doesn't ao3 raise $300k like 3 or 4 times a year? How did they not have ddos protection before now even the free clowdflare version?

Never really followed the off site drama or organizational goals but seeing ao3 not want to cave into pressure to moderate beyond legal requirements seems like a good goal. I would rather have it exists with the subset of degen coomers where I can mostly filter it out than a shit hole with power mods deleting entire "problematic" Fandom when they get provoked. And I can see them sticking to that position for a while considering how long it took them to implement tag limits and crossover limits when that was universally reviled for years.

Thankfully, you really only see it when it's necessary. There's a lot more consent, even in the weird rough sex ones.
If you are not literally writing porn, can't you just end the chapter right before anything happens? Even Turtledove's stuff is too weird sometimes, especially if you want to enjoy the book for its actual contents after. Not that Turtledove's characters are usually especially admirable in the first place, but having them do weird sex stuff does not help.

You joke, but Null winding up being the founder or instigator of a network of services provided to the "internet's unwanted" is actually something I could see happening in the next five years.

Holy shit, the world of fanfiction continues to be a hellscape after the height of Harry Potter mania. And running a fanfic website continues to be serious business.

Honestly, my experience with AO3 has been seeing smut (ESPECIALLY Yaoi), and authors using it as a place to host their fics alongside FF.Net.

Yeah he talked about potentially starting a charity on the last mati stream for the purposes of providing lowercase I internet services to people.

And Livejournal, which got targeted for hosting gay child porn (actually Harry Potter fanfiction). There was a lot of stuff that got lost forever, which kind of galvanized the big-name fans who had law degrees to do something about it. Partly self-serving but I get why they wanted to build something that wasn't going to be open to hate mobs. Maybe the last successful "build your own site" movement?

But a lot of the people in leadership are drama queens in their own right, they just hide it a little better than most.

They're using Cloudflare, lmao.

One of the people slamming them for their treatment of volunteers is the founder of Dreamwidth, a Livejournal mirror, and she refuses to use Cloudflare because they were slow to drop the Farms.

All hell would break loose if anyone found out OTW was using Jersh-provided tech.

That's what I want in most things: the ability to curate my own experience. I'd rather have to filter out things I don't like than have an algorithm or an invisible janny decide what gets shown.

Apparently that's not a universal desire, though. Insert MGS2 AI Colonel speech here, except it's about slash fiction. Who else could wade through the sea of garbage you people produce, retrieve valuable truths and even interpret their meaning for later generations?
