What are some fan games, mods, remakes, demakes, and ports that are worth playing?

Also, where do people find these games since most get DMCA'd immediately, but are still clearly out there given that every YouTuber and streamer tends to have them. A quick google search will bring up various results, though some are easier to find than others.

We start with arguably the most famous. Black Mesa.
I remember liking it, but I never got around to playing the Zen update. I always had a gripe with the aimbot marines that did constant damage if you were in line of sight.

Goldeneye 25
A remake intended for the 25th anniversary of Goldeneye, but was DMCA'd immediately. Allegedly. I personally doubt there was a DMCA, and I don't think the game ever existed in a meaningful way beyond the demo because it seems very bare bones, and seemed to only exist to draw attention to the creators other projects.

In contrast, Timesplitters Rewind continues to make progress and posts occational updates.

While Goldeneye Source was released years ago and remains online without getting DMCA'd even to this day. Though it's multiplayer only.

But the main reason I created this thread is Golden Axe Returns. A remake of Golden Axe with all the games in one. Streets of Rage Remake was a similar idea back in the day. Both have been DMCA'd, but are still around in some form. I liked Streets of Rage Remake when I played it years ago, but it's been overhauled since then.

Nintendo is the most famous for these kind of DMCA'd fan projects, and often steal the ideas for themselves. Fullscreen Mario and Another Metroid 2 Remake being infamous. Not helped by the rabid Nintendo fanbase. I talked to one guy who made an anticipated Starfox themed mod, and he said he gave it up due to being harassed and threatened by fans. This was before such behaviour was common.

https://kilgoretroutmaskreplicant.gitlab.io/plain-html/ - 1oom, remake of Master of Orion 1 (See also some of its forks, eg. https://github.com/1oom-fork/1oom/ )

https://openxcom.org/ - OpenXCom

https://github.com/diasurgical/devilution - Devilution, remake of Diablo 1

These are all pretty faithful reimplementations instead of the glowups that characterize your OP, so I'm a little off the thread theme, but they're all great projects that I appreciate.

Here are a few more that are more along the lines of glow-ups

https://rengames.us/ffr.html - Final Fantasy Renaissance reimplements the game, adds a bit.

https://hoverbat.itch.io/ziiaol - Remake of Zelda 2. Rebalances, aggressively tunes.

https://forum.metroidconstruction.com/index.php/topic,4952.0.html - Metroid Planets. Imagine Mario Maker 2 for NES Metroid. Boasts a great OST, basically Super Metroid's but demade to NES specs.

Fallout 4 has several fan projects that aim to remake the original games in the new engine: Vault 13 and Project Arroyo. Additionally, Capital Wasteland Project aims to remake Fallout 3(with Point Lookout DLC already released on Nexus) and F4:NV doing the same with New Vegas(that one is taken over by troons so it's likely never coming out).

The cancelled Fallout 3, "Van Buren"(Retcon Raider on youtube did a good series on covering what that is and how it would look like) also has several decent projects in works to finally make that game a reality: There is a stand alone project made in Unity, altho we don't know when it's coming out. Then we have the new player in town, Revelation Blues that aims to remake the game in the form of a New Vegas total conversion mod. Lastly, there is Nuevo Mexico, another NV mod that burrows a lot of the elements of that game, but the project is currently in a limbo due to what is probably tranny drama within the development team, and has officially been put on hold. There is also Fallout Yesterday, but it's kind of ass and barely has anything to do with Van Buren other than skinwalking some of the concepts and locations the game has. It is not a proper remake and more of a piggyback ride to make that mod relevant.

https://hoverbat.itch.io/ziiaol - Remake of Zelda 2. Rebalances, aggressively tunes.

I really, REALLY, suggestion any one that ever had any feeling about playing NES Zelda 2 to give this one a shot. Its is a great action platformer experience with a TON of secrets to look for and find with a simple but engaging combat engine. Its like actually playing the rose colored glasses memory of Legend of Zelda 2 you played as a kid.

GTA Re: Liberty City Stories PC - A conversion mod made with the GTA Vice City engine Build 5 was the last build released to the public while Build 6 Beta was the last build that was released to the Patreon supporters before Rockstar Games sent a C&D causing the mod team to stop development and close their Patreon. There is an archive of Build 5 and Build 6.

They had plans on porting the mod to the PSP emulator after they were done but I don't know how far they got in development. I see there are some builds for it but I have not tried them so I don't know the quality. The development of the mod was near complete before it was shut down by Rockstar so it is a broken mod but the game can be finished to the end.
Because it was not a finished mod there are some bugs in the game and these are some of the solutions I have found to fix the bugs. So you have to save often since the game does crash a lot and if you use a game controller you have to switch to standard controls in the settings before entering the corona at the end of the mission "Driving Mr. Leone" (or the game will crash) then you can switch back to classic mode after you complete the mission if the classic mode is the setting you chose, some have said there are a few other missions with this issue and the same solution resolved it.

Don't save the game on the first save slot go with any other save slot because the game will crash every time you try to launch the game from the first save slot essentially soft locking the game. If you do get soft locked just go to the save folder and delete the save file. Someone did upload the saves for each mission to deal with progression loss from the crashing. Make sure if or when you use the save files to change the number from GTALCSsf1 to GTALCSsf2 so it is not the first save slot so it don't crash.

VTM: Redemption Reawakened

Is an ambitious fan project that has been in development for about three years they have about 30 people working on it. They are using Skyrim to remake VTM: Redemption. The modders are trying to make the game look as close as possible to the old game with the intention to add more content. The lead dev said they were granted permission by Bethesda to make this mod but he made it very clear that if Bethesda tells them to stop development they have no choice but to end the project.

Some Mega Man Classic fangames I really like (cause Capcom sure as hell isn't going to make more classic MegaMan):

Day In the Lime Light 2 is a spinoff series where the boss from pervious game fight the boss of the next game. I would skip Day in the Lime Light 1 and go straight to Day in the Lime Light 2 (since it combines the best of classic Mega Man series) and shows the developers learned experience from making DILL1. Each Robot Master moves and attack different with strength and weakness with the stages being molded to showcase what a Robot Master can do (and are not just simple copies of MM3 levels). Every stage complete unlocks that Robot Master and the devs went all out making sure that each one has their own nitch.

Mega Man Rock n Roll: A fun fan Mega Man game where you get to play with as Mega Man or Roll. Mega Man is a bit stronger and tougher but Roll comes with a double jump that makes platforming a bit easier.

Mega Man Unlimited: Another really good fan game. Goes a little bit into the fan fiction at the end but a really enjoyable time if you like the classic Mega Man series gameplay.

Mega Man The Sequel Wars Red: So back in the 90s Capcom released a remake complication of the first three Mega Man games on Sega Genesis (Sort of like Super Mario All Stars). This is a continuation of that idea with Mega Man 4 being remade 16 bit Genesis graphics along with some other updates (can play as ProtoMan).

MegaMan 4B: Its not the best game, the controls are a bit floaty, and the menu isn't the easiest to understand but I forgive it for the concept and fun artwork. Basically this is a side story taking place at the same times as Mega Man 4 where ProtoMan is looking around Wily ruined fortress from Mega Man 3. ProtoMan is basically fighting the the proto types for the Mega Man 5 bosses (made out of what ever junk Wily had) with the broken remains of bots from MegaMan 1/2/3 in the background.

Some Mega Man Classic fangames
That's a point. I always hear fans complaining that Capcom never made a new Megaman Legends. I assume there's indie (or troon) clones or fangames to fill the void, but I've never heard of any.

F4:NV doing the same with New Vegas
That's a shame. It showed promise. It always confused me why they were allowed to use anything, except voice lines from original New Vegas.

Point Lookout DLC already released on Nexus
That, along with Sim Settlements 2 and Fallout London have been on my todo list, but my Nexus account was locked out and I'm too lazy to make a new one.

Metroid Planets. Imagine Mario Maker 2 for NES Metroid. Boasts a great OST, basically Super Metroid's but demade to NES specs.
How long do you think it'll last before it gets DMCA'd?

There's a few interesting mods for that game, but limited by the clunky gameplay of OG xcom. X-Piratez being a favourite. There's World of Terrifying Silence that is an update of Terror From The Deep to be more fleshed out and less of a rush job.

VTM: Redemption
I only know of Bloodlines. Is there are a reason they're remaking it in Skyrim instead of as a new thing, given that they're replacing everything?

These are all pretty faithful reimplementations instead of the glowups that characterize your OP, so I'm a little off the thread theme, but they're all great projects that I appreciate.
They're all good. I mention demakes, I just didn't want to make the OP really long. I mention Black Mesa, but there's another mod (seemingly abandoned) that recreates Half-Life 2 in goldsrc. Or parts of it anyway.

How to forget these two gems:

dPaWTUz.jpeg

I remember the internet jokingly saying that, if Nintendo DMCA'd the project, they were recognizing the original CDi games as legitimate.

@Judge Dredd To be fair to the fan community doing a 3d game is way harder then a 2d 8-bit style game. So I give them some slack there.

In the spirit of fan games I really do recommend checking out the works of Loco Malito. Dude basically creates his own flavors of classic games, his most notable being Hydorah (R-Type) and Maldita Castilla (Ghost n Goblins). Both have EX version that you can play money for or just go with the standard editions if you want to try them out.

Entropy: Zero 2 is where you play as a Combine soldier who spouts one liners at everything. It's the best Half-Life 2 expansion I ever played. Make sure to save Wilson.

Age of the Ring is the best LOTR mod in existence for me. For example, for the Lothlorian faction, their builder unit, the Lorilinde, has the most beautiful voice and actually sings while growing a Mallorn Tree you can turn into a barracks to train units. If you know your lore, the Elves first sang to the trees to grow them into Ents during the First Age. That's not even going to fully fleshed out factions like Haradwaith or Adventure factions like Arnor.

GenLauncher for C&C Generals. If you have a cracked copy of the game, just install this and it can automatically download patches and mods into the game files. Makes playing the game real easy.

Expanded Galaxy Mod for Mass Effect 3. The modding community is your typical Discord faggotry but the mods they've made are really good. This one adds much needed fluff to ME3, even going so far as doing this.
Untitled.png
A visual representation of all the fleets you managed to bring together. I can't understate just how talented these modders are. They even managed to recreate Pinnacle Station in the remaster by dumping the code from the original DLC and importing it after Bioware lost the source code to it.
I also wanna put Better Dreams here but the creator of the mod took it off Nexus after they left the group cause of faggot drama. Apparently they didn't like the community using their keep Thane alive mod for gay romances.

I mentioned this elsewhere but Rebuild the Capital for Tale of Two Wastelands. I'm not a BoS fanboy, but for the quest "Parade on Penn Avenue" you're part of an experimental Vertibird squad that goes down in power armor to rescue trapped troopers. It's just you, mutants, 3 squad members and a 50 round M16 that shoots 5mm minigun rounds. It's the closest to CoD you'll come outside of playing The Frontier.

Improvement Mod for AoE 3. Do you want the improvements brought on by the remaster but don't want to support Microsoft after they brought in a "diversity consultant" to butcher the campaign for Chayton Black and change the Iroquois to Haudenosaunee and have no way to change it back. They also changed Colonial Age to Commerce Age. Improvement Mod undoes all of that, except for the Age thing but that's a small thing easily fixed.

Ah, The Forgotten City. Originaly a Skyrim mod and then a stand alone game. It does the loop cycle thing from Outer Wilds rather well I think. No spoilers on this one, better you play it yourself. The devs have said they're working on something else.

There's of course The Stanley Parable as well. Started out as a mod for Half-Life 2, only to become it's own thing. Really do like this one.

Minor one but worth mentioning. Valkyria Chronicles 1 has a rebalance mod. A simple thing it does is it adds +2 on the A rank timers, meaning it's closer to VC4 in terms of timing of capturing objectives. This means no more having to one turn scout rush to get A rank.
qEhANMg5-bm2y8aFyunFMlYo0YSY6IYhiMPm5HWoq2Q.jpg

So Pangea Software were a company that made games for the 2000s colored Mac computers that were being sold everywhere. Bugdom, CroMag Rally. These are considered Abandonware these days but a software engineer got permission from the original devs to port the code to work on modern PCs, essentially saving the games. They're free to download and play.

Mentioned this in another post too but Saints Row 2 Rejuiced is another recent one that claims to fix alot of bugs and slowdown issues, works with Gentlemen of the Row. Claim to be working on Reloaded, which seems to be a proper remaster now that Volition have shut down.

Wesnoth still exists, is still free.

Multiverse mod for FTL. Adds a bunch of new ships, crew, weapons and the like.

Oh, these need to be pointed out. The retranslation patches for Neptunia Rebirth 2 and 3. The original english had Nep speak in memes.
542831125_preview_1445936109082.jpg
There are more games that have their own retranslation patches but these ones should be brought up for how agregious it is.

Stellaris has alot of good mods. Probably the biggest one is Gigastructures.
Same with Darkest Dungeon, even one with Guts that's stupidly OP. And the Thorn of course. A Debuff - Dodge - Riposte fighter. She takes a bit to set up but since she can riposte and stack bleed she can just dish out damage.

Mentioned this in another thread too. The Pathfinder CRPGs have some decent mods. Kingmaker has Toybox, which is a utility to mess around with the game however you please. Wrath of the RIghous has that and other mods like Expanded Epilogue, added classes from the tabletop and the expanded Camellia romance mod.
Now romance mods arn't really special, Tali has one for Mass Effect for instance. But what makes Cami special is this one Russian guy actually paid the portrait artist for the game to make extra ending slides for him. This artist did and they were included in the ending he wrote. I think it's one of the only times I can think of where a romance mod has offical art made by one of the artists from the game.

I'm also remind that the Krystal Half-Life Alyx mod is also a thing. They even got back her original voice actress who was very enthusiastic about it.

I forgot that this existed until today. Action 52 Owns! was a community made attempt to remake all the games in Action 52. It was never completed but here's an archive of what it exist of it. It has some finished games and demos of what it could be.

The most popular of the bunch was Streemerz, it even got a proper port for the NES in a cartridge.

I only know of Bloodlines. Is there are a reason they're remaking it in Skyrim instead of as a new thing, given that they're replacing everything?
Someone asked him why Skyrim instead of Fallout since Fallout had a working firearm system and this was his response.
Cause working firearms are practically the only thing fallout 4 has over Skyrim. Skryrim has better melee, has shields, many weapon types, crossbows, bows, medieval settings and assets, magic, a whole menagerie of mods to improve those, it doesn't have a computer on your hand as a UI menu and that menu is highly modifiable, it has horses, living flora and fauna that aint a bunch of mutants. Fallout 4 has marginally better graphics but what does it matter if itself is already an outdated engine itself. Fallout 4 is all about 60s post-apo so it doesn't really have clean modern nights architecture and assets. VTM redemption is mostly fantasy setting so Skyrim fits it better. And trust me as someone who modded Fallout 4 since 2015 I can tell you it's about 5x buggier than Skyrim, both in-game and in creation tools... Finally we do have a talneted modder on our scope, let's say his gun animations are call of duty level, but he wants to be anonymus so I kinda cant say more.

The lead dev seems determined to make this game happen, he plans on raising money to hire a copyright lawyer to deal with the companies so he could focus on development. He said if Bethesda changes their mind he will scrap everything and start over from scratch.

There was three companies he had to deal with Paradox who owns Vampire, they said awhile back if anybody wants to make a game using their IP they are okay with it. Bethesda who owns Skyrim are okay with it as long as the dev team consult with them as not to violate the EULA. Activision who own the rights to VTM: Redemption were silent for two years then they said about a year ago they were going to merge with some company and didn't want to say anything until the new management approved of the project.

He said two days ago Activision refused to let them use their assets so the dev team plan on creating their own assets.

Underhell is an excellent standalone mod for the half life 2 source engine. It is easily one of my favorite shooters of all time for the amount of variety and effort put Into it.

You start out as a cop in a haunted house ( scares completely optional if you get the hell out fast enough) before properly starting the game attempting to stop what looks like a terrorist attack.

It's basically F.E.A.R without the slow mo up until episode 1, then it takes a horror turn involving an underground prison. You have to work which a bunch of well written security guards to escape.

The creator actually got hired to be a developer so the series is pretty much on pause, but even with just the prologue and episode 1 it's a meaty game with an oddly satisfying cliffhanger.

Was there anything left to salvage aside from the funny cutscenes? The game itself is pretty shitty, I mean it came out on a "console" on which most of the library consists of FMV "games"

Shocked no one mentioned AM2R yet.

Mods are still being made and now there's a randomizer. It's my 2nd favorite Metroid right after a tie between Zero Mission and Dread.

Streets of Rage Remake is another one:

It's easily the best of all the games just for the amount of shit you can do.

I liked the 3D Maniac Mansion remake, Meteor Mess. It caught some flack for looking like it's mostly made of stock Unity assets (and it probably is), but MM isn't a pretty game in any iteration. There was enough new stuff to make me play through it a couple more times, which is a pretty good showing for a point-and-click adventure game, and imo it's probably not a bad way to play MM for the first time, either.

The stuff:
  • Voice Overs (englisch)
  • Multiple Languages (englisch, german, french, spanish, danish)
  • Adaptive Music
  • New Solution Path using Jeff (new rooms, new objects, new puzzles)
  • Quick Actions and Hotspot Highlighting
  • No more Deadends
  • All Arcade Cabinets are playable

ACTUALLY Hydorah appears to be patterned after Gradius. :)

I enjoyed his L'Abbaye des Morts quite a lot although I got stuck pretty early on.

(And it's not based on a particular game, so it's off-topic...)

Not really, the person who made the remaster did it as a way to learn game coding. He just picked those games for their infamy.

The added bonuses were the improved game controls, QoL fixes and the King Harkinian as a playable character in New Game+.

Foreword: Looking down on this post, I may have gone too far in a few places but I hope people find my game recs informative at least.

Day In the Lime Light 2 is a spinoff series where the boss from previous game fight the boss of the next game. I would skip Day in the Lime Light 1 and go straight to Day in the Lime Light 2 (since it combines the best of classic Mega Man series) and shows the developers learned experience from making DILL1. Every stage complete unlocks that Robot Master and the devs went all out making sure that each one has their own niche.
Speaking of DITLL, there has recently been an effort to continue development of DDLL3 from where the original dev last ended but in the new Megamix Engine that most modern fangames run on. So far only the original 4 bosses of the original pre-release build are playable but gameplay wise, they are a 1:1 transition if not even more smooth than the original.

Also, I'm surprised that I haven't seen a mention of Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch yet, it is easily one of the oldest and most updated mods for the Doom engine, with the latest updated v6b released on March 2023, which added content from the MM World GB games. That's not to mention the enormous community efforts like the Class Based Mod, that attempts to create custom weapons for every robot master in the game and other characters too.

Even though there are already official MM fighting games through the arcade duology and other fangames like Robot Master Mayhem, Mega Man Arena is the first of its kind the attempts to translate the classic formula into a platform fighter à la Smash quite well. The game is already on it's 3rd round of updates and just recently had their first in-person tournament a few months ago, so it definitely has some legitimacy as a competitive fighting game.

Mega Man Unlimited: Another really good fan game. Goes a little bit into the fan fiction at the end but a really enjoyable time if you like the classic Mega Man series gameplay.
Speaking of MMU, the dev behind it just announced its sequel a few weeks ago and it looks very promising so far. I like the fact that he's attempting to link both the Classic and X sagas by showing Rock using a prototype of the technology that Light would ultimately include into X as response to Zero sweeping the floor with him in 1, reminds me in a way of the mechanical augmentations in Deus Ex HR vs the nanotech ones we see in DX1 25 years later.
Krystal Half-Life Alyx mod is also a thing. They even got back her original voice actress who was very enthusiastic about it.
A few months back the YT algorithm struck me with a small video covering some Star Fox fangames. However, the one that caught my attention more than the rest of the games showcased was Event Horizon. The sheer scale and scope of the thing was beyond anything done in both Freespace 2 (the base game it runs on) and SF games in general. As of now, there's about 3 people actively developing the game and actively rebuilding the engine. Somehow they managed to build ground level and underwater levels on a game that originally only supported space combat. They even somehow not only managed to get Krystal VA to return but some of the VAs for SF64 too (Wolf's and Bill's VA).

According to the game's website, the team plans on covering all the SF saga in a single game: from 64 all the way to Command (although with a few changes), with animated cutscenes. Currently the entirety of 64 campaign (alternate routes included) has been done and the first 2-3 levels also have been fully voiced now. All that's left to do is to do custscenes and adding voice line to the rest of the levels. Next step seems to be remaking SFA as an on-rails shooter with alternate routes too and it already looks promising.

While the Portal modding community is rather small these days, there are a few projects that still manage to reinvent the wheel even nowadays, with We Haven't Met being one of the most unique and technically impressive map I've seen in recent years. If you've played Superliminal before, imagine that but with portal puzzles

Albeit CoD modding is pretty much non-existent nowadays, back when MW1 first released, IW distributed mod tools for it with the PC version and besides the obvious custom MP maps, some people made attempts to do custom single-player content on the engine to very varied results. However, although the average SP mod consisted of a single mission, SPi decided to make an entire custom campaign with an original storyline and a lot of custom setpieces. Not only did he managed to complete it but also released a sequel and a prequel to it and remastered it just this May. That's not mentioning the surreal Nightmare map he made as adyacent mod to Rooftops.

Platforming in vanilla Doom is already a difficult task but to make an entire mod around would seem rather counter productive, Simon's Destiny would like to differ. Using a whip in a 2.5D environment is surprisingly solid and while just like in the original Castlevania platforming is un fair sometimes the blend of action and jumping here is quite smooth itself. IIRC there's also a gameplay only versions of the weapons and mobs of this mod compatible with other WADs, quite a nice touch.

Despite the fact that there's already a lot of action focused gameplay mods for Doom, The False Angel is the first that I see that attempts to blend DMC mechanics in a FPS. Even when playing on a test map, the controls are quite complex so playing with a controller or a custom bindset is heavily recommended.

HexArcana is one of the most underrated gameplay mods I've seen in a while, while it's main purpose is relatively simple (bringing the classes of Hexen as playable characters to Doom and Heretic), the amount possibilities available with just 3 classes is vast. As of now I've only played with the Mage one but even its starting weapon is quite powerful and some of the custom binds for it are perfect for slaughter-like maps.

Diabolus Ex is a single-level WAD for GZDoom based ports, it's very short (you can easily complete it on nightmare and 100% secrets in ~2hrs) but just like the game it got it's namesake from, it's highly replayable. The level keeps up with the traditions of Immersive sims and offers several alternate paths to get to the exit and also has a nice OST and a plethora of easter eggs from other games.

Bullet hells are dime a dozen nowadays, but Circadian Offset it's quite unique on how it handles it from a FPS perspective. Almost all the weapons are projectile based instead of the usual hitscan, however given amount of enemies per level in this mod, 90% percent of the time your proyectiles will hit something at least. It also has a custom soundtrack and both the level and art design is gorgeous.

Hunter's Moon main purpose is backporting the core elements of QIII and beyond back into the idTech1 engine, and fortunately it excels at it. Not only satisfied with Quake 3 content, the mod itself also acts as a pastiche of Doom and the rest of the Quake series with multiple characters and weapons from the entirety of the series history available. The mod is also designed to work as both a multiplayer experience (with extra map packs already available) and a campaign (which is still under construction but most of the levels for it are already done by
now)
