Apple has shut down Facebook’s ability to distribute internal iOS apps, from early releases of the Facebook app to basic tools like a lunch menu. A person familiar with the situation tells The Verge that early versions of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other pre-release “dogfood” (beta) apps have stopped working, as have other employee apps, like one for transportation. Facebook is treating this as a critical problem internally, we’re told, as the affected apps simply don’t launch on employees’ phones anymore.

The shutdown comes in response to news that Facebook has been using Apple’s program for internal app distribution to track teenage customers with a “research” app.

That app, revealed yesterday by TechCrunch, was distributed outside of the App Store using Apple’s enterprise program, which allows developers to use special certificates to install more powerful apps onto iPhones. Those apps are only supposed to be used by a company’s employees, however, and Facebook had been distributing its tracking app to customers. Facebook later said it would shut down the app.

This poses a huge issue for Facebook. While Apple provides other tools a company can use to install apps internally, Apple’s enterprise program is the main solution for widely distributing internal apps and services. In an email, a Facebook spokesperson said “I can confirm that this affects our internal apps.”

In a statement given to Recode, Apple said that Facebook was in “clear breach of their agreement with Apple.” Any developer that breaches that agreement, Apple said, has their distribution certificates revoked, “which is what we did in this case to protect our users and their data.” Apple declined to comment on shutting down all of Facebook’s internal apps in an email to The Verge.

Revoking a certificate not only stops apps from being distributed on iOS, but it also stops apps from working. And because internal apps by the same organization or developer may be connected to a single certificate, it can lead to immense headaches like the one Facebook now finds itself in where a multitude of internal apps have been shut down.

Apple and Facebook have already been bickering over privacy, but this is the first instance of Apple taking an action that directly shuts down some of Facebook’s activities. Last March, Apple CEO Tim Cook criticized Facebook’s handling of the Cambridge Analytica data sharing scandal, saying, “I wouldn’t be in this situation” if he were running the company. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg later said the comments were “extremely glib” and spoke of Apple as a company that “work hard to charge you more.”

My forefathers? Considering I have documented ancestors who have been living in the Appalachian Mountains since 1740 (before America was even an independent country) and I study my family history for fun, I think I know a thing or two about my kin.

My ancestry is a mix of several European ethnic groups, namely Irish, Scots-Irish (Ulster-Scots for all you Kiwis in the British Isles), German, and Italian. My German ancestors were from the Rhine Valley before emigrating to America in the mid-1700's, landing in Maryland before establishing their own independent farm in western Virginia in 1740.

One of my Scots-Irish ancestors was a veteran of the American Revolution and was among the earliest white settlers in what is now Wyoming County, West Virginia in the 1790's.

My father's ancestors fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War as part of a militia (West Virginia was a major stronghold of Unionist sentiment during that time, which is how they achieved statehood in 1863)

My great-grandfather fought in World War II in the North African and Italian campaigns and was awarded the Silver Star, while my other great-grandfather served in the Korean War as a combat engineer and was awarded the Bronze Star

My grandparents were activists for the UMWA during the 1960's and 1970's.

Just because I know who my forefathers are doesn't mean I have to be an insecure racist ethno-nationalist dickhead.

How about when he was suspended for 2 months for doxing someone he thought was a part of "neo-nazi, alt-right" hate group Kiwi Farms? The time he was suspended from Facebook for saying he wanted to see the president hung?

It’s a slippery slope that ends in a dystopian nightmare where for-profit companies try to distance themselves from things that will make them look bad.

Huh, two people who have been temporarily suspended from Facebook multiple times for much more extreme behavior than what Facebook is banning people for. Neither of them is banned. Very :informative:.

Its almost as though this policy is something theyve had in place for a while and have applied to "hate content" in general, but with an incident such as Christchurch there was more attention dragged to it and louder whinign by the firm's stakeholders.

Yeah, like when they cracked down on black extremism after the Dallas sho... oh wait no. Or when they went after Islamist extremism after [pick an incident]- oh wait, they didn't do that either. It's almost like there's a pattern here, of only one group being targeted for collective blame.

Yeah, It really should be emphasised how with any big company, no matter how infested with ideologues and batshit crazy activist types it seems, the board of directors and CEOs and stockholders and whatever are pretty much never going to be motivated to do anything for any reason other than to sustain/maintain/increase profit. If the people in control of these companies and those who invest in these companies think that something will get them good PR points or avoid a PR nightmare while seemingly costing nothing then they will do it in a heartbeat, no matter how dumb or hypocritical or counterproductive it might actually be.

If something causes media goons to screech in outrage then companies will reflexively try to dropkick whatever is being screeched about. If something causes the PR department to go apeshit, they will immediately backpedal and drop any mention of what pissed them off. If politicians or "politician tier" public figures start making noises then full damage control and grovelling procedures get initiated.

Since hysteria about the "vast underground neo nazi conspiracy" is in vogue, anything that could be spun as supportive of it gets stamped down on.

15 years ago it was anything deemed "unpatriotic".

30 years ago it anything deemed "satanic".

Best part of a century ago it was anything deemed "communist"

Next decade it will probably be anything deemed to have links to "the vast SJW conspiracy" or such that gets the bootstamp to the face by apathetic corporate types and the fucktards they source for "public opinion".

So long as companies rely on the metric of "1 person complaining = 1,000,000 people outraged and offended and forever boycotting our products" this is how things play out.
