Dunno if the security was that low. It wasn't great, and if anyone is worried whether some Russian hacker has information on what screamo bands you loved in 2009 then the answer is "yes", but my cynical take has always been that the "Facebook security > Myspace security" argument was just marketing puffery, inserted into the public discoure by Facebook's marketing teams.

FB advertised hard to become the market leader, and as such I'm skeptical about almost everything that was said in its favour, especially in regards to its competitors.
 
Hacked is a loaded word, these were "scraped" from an exploit with the facebook servers. A real hack would be way bigger, imagine having all the data that facebook collects. There has be to 5000+ datapoints for a person that actually uses facebook on a regular basis, not to mention every post and dm.

Yeah its a really weird data set. It's definitely not a hack, it's 100% a scrape based on the contents and lack of "secure" information.

It has fields for the following info:
Phone Number
User ID
First Name
Last Name
Gender
Town
City
Relationship Status
Employment
Date and timestamp. I'm unsure what it represents
Email
DOB

Half the fields are missing for the majority of people. It's laughably shit

This leak is basically a calling list for scammers. Now when some Mumbai gutter ape is calling/texting/e-mailing about IRS back taxes, they'll have names with the phone numbers and some other stuff boomers put in the bio section. The social engineering script works better that way on cold-calls. Never forget that your average Facebook boomer assumes (rightly) that the Indians are a docile servant race, so them politely addressing you by name on a call makes them a legit representative of Amazon or MS tech support.

Not that scammers didn't have this before, but jesus fucking christ 32m in the US alone. Stop using Fiverr for netsec, Zuck.

Unfortunate but not unexpected. Meatspace requires me to have at least one easily hackable account out there, so I guess my name, city, phone number & email address have been compromised.
Glad I stopped using it 6 years ago.

Looks about correct on the files I'm looking at. I also noticed that the second-to-last column, the one with the timestamp, doesn't appear to go into 2020, which suggests that this is probably a replay of the 2019 breach, or at least that it is an old breach. With that said, I don't understand why it's not on haveIbeenpwned now if it's that old. Do they not deem it a real breach?

A record is not a person. It's like a row in a table. If they're using the old mainframe definition of "record" anyway. Depending on how the source data was structured (normalisation) there could be info on anywhere from a billion people to a million.

Which I assume to mean that the data is at least that old. Looking at articles, the 2019 leak was 419Mil, so this one has information on another 120 million or so extra accounts. Whether its the same data, who knows. I do know that haveibeenpwned only have access to public dumps. Was it released publicly last time? If not, that would be why.

Another interesting point about the data is that every entry includes a phone number, but after checking some of the userIDs they don't have it public. Maybe they were public at the point of scrape, and facebook changed the default setting.
 
A "hack"? No, someone just found a way to easily page through every public facebook account and scrape the public data. Nothing private was taken. Calling it a hack is just Buisiness Insider trying to get clicks. When people say "script kiddy", this is what they mean. This is literal script kiddy shit, and it's hilarious that Facebook trannies are so incompetent that they allowed this to happen

Guessing skids bypassed that or something. If so that pushes it closer to breach than simple public data scraping since the security policy was violated (by FB's incompetence).
