I found it really interesting too. And bleak. Really bleak. That Poverty Mindset doesn't exactly set you up for success, but 'success' means different things for different people. For Becky, it's not about personal or professional development clearly. She seems content as long as nobody's leaving her, and as long as she can stay rooted in what's familiar (hence the reason she'll never move away with AL). But she's never left the 90s, either.
Her entire family subscribes to the same belief system. Education is for snobby people that think their shit doesn't stink. It's that kind of backwards mentality, combined with zero ambition that decimates entire communities. Most people that have traveled or been exposed to other ways of living in the world understand this. But if all you know is Monticello, Kentucky, and you were never raised to be curious, to question, to explore, or to push the limits of your abilities, this is what you end up with. A lazy simpleton that thinks to be simple is to be
righteous.
Roger's a funny dude with a lot of insight. I've been enjoying his content.
