Everquest. The ORIGINAL MMORPG. Does it still withstand the test of time? 800+ players on the Project Quarm server can't be wrong.

I've been playing on this game server and it's been entertaining. It has content up to the fourth expansion, Planes of Power, so it has a lot that I never saw originally when I played in '99-'00. It also has the graphics update and everything looks so clean, it's blowing my mind.

I'm levelling an Iksar Shadow Knight and a High Elf Cleric.

If anyone else wants to play the original Everquest 1 for free in current year, here's a quick rundown:

Game files:
(Use the 2.2 file download for Quarm)

Server file patcher:

Zeal game extension:
(Approved for use by devs, adds QOL features and in-game map)

Voodoo graphics card patcher:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArLNnN0GwfQ Set up guide
(Windows might think this is a virus, it's lying)

What to actually do:
Register a forum account on TAKP, then in the forum account panel, register your game account
Extract the game files to C: \Everquest or another similar, NOT C: \Program Files\Everquest or anything nested/longer
In the same folder where you find the game exe, extract the server file patcher
In that same folder, extract the Zeal extension files
In that same folder, extract and install the voodoo patcher, follow the video guide for settings

It should be one single folder full of dozens of files all mixed together like .emt and .s3d and .eff et cetera.

Now run eqemupatcher.exe and patch then run, and you should be in the game where you can log in
The server is called "Project Quarm"

Have fun!

I notice you said you're leveling a Shadow Knight and a Cleric. Does this mean this is a boxing server? Is it scaled so you can Duo most content or am I gonna have to 6-12 box to do anything interesting? Or worst of all actually have to group. Yuck.

I've been playing EQ off and on since like 2007 and have played a lot of EQEmu. The best custom server I've played is the Imperium Server. It's got really good bones and if you just wanna play EQ by yourself and only have to Duo for 95% of content (there are actual custom raids that you do have to interact with other people for if you wanna get endgame stuff, and it is very rewarding,). It has Content up to GoD with the addition of TSS and some SoD zones, but there is a lot of custom content.

Unfortunately, the owners are insufferable Canadian Liberal Faggots, and the server is kept rigidly swept, and you can get banned for literally anything. And, of course the core population of their small server is a bunch of asslickers.

No boxing, I'm just doing two different things for fun alternately. You do gotta group, but that doesn't bother me, and that's also why I want some kiwis to play.

Very tempting!!! Thia mmo was before my time but I had heard many things and legends about it. I may give it a whirl, we will see!

Good luck to you but just be aware EverQuest has a reputation for being best played with a group and soloing things can be difficult without others to assist you.

Project Quarm's creator is a tranny coincidentally named "Secrets" who was rumored to be acting inappropriate with young boys in game.

When Daybreak sued the THJ server admins for copyright infringement, which doxed their names, Secrets shut down Project Quarm immediately out of fear of them suing him and getting doxed. He only brought the server back up after getting permission from Daybreak along with a ton of rules that basically made the server not worth playing.

That motherfucker is hiding some deep shit.

I know 0% about any of this and picked Quarm because it was there, but this is interesting. All I wanna do is level my Iksar and Quarm has more content than Project 1999.

What I wanna know is where the "young boys" came from. Everquest is for geriatrics.

Yeah it's the ORIGINAL MMO so it's heavily focused on grouping, guilding, raid partying, stuff like that. You can solo on a couple classes though.

No one under 18 is playing EverQuest in 2025.

I’m tempted to try this. I bought EverQuest as a kid, then my parents refused to pay the monthly subscription so I never actually got to try it. Maybe the best thing that ever happened to me since I never fell down the MMORPG hole, but still.

This wasn't recent, Secrets has been involved in the EQ emulation scene since 2004. He came back to live servers during TLPs and after multiple guilds through the years would have to watch him closely on Discord, and his reddit account got leaked of degenerate shit, he fucked off to start his own server where he can ban anyone who mentions his past. He's had multiple server projects through the years and they all end the same way, his unstable shemale mind starts fights with his coworkers and he melts down and ends everything, then the cycle starts anew.

Here is a long interview Zaide of Faceless Empire (one of the top guilds across all TLPs) had with him. Nothing really interesting in it except him going over his history in EQ and admitting his many failed projects. Doesn't dare to talk about any of the controversial shit obviously.

Gonna play tonight, I made it to level 11 on my Iksar so if anyone needs training I'll be on.

Sounds fun but there's no way I have the time to level to 50 again. I remember how agonizing it was in the original.
When I was a younger man I did project 99 that was fun, but the wait times on quest spawns etc.
I'd rather not do that ever again.

Girl I've never even been past level 12 before this, the fun is in the journey or something

Weather update:

Really nice community, generous with free items and stuff if you're genuinely new. A guild invited me knowing I'm a newb and they were very cool. I asked for someone to run me to a good levelling spot and not only did they personally escort me but they power-levelled me until I could use my next level spells, AND gave me a bunch of free money.

Then I saw this guy:

LOL

All in all I've got a level 14 dark elf cleric and a 15 iksar shadow knight doing pretty well.

How's Quarm / 99 doing anyway? You thinking of trying Legends when the beta starts tomorrow?

It was good last I checked but I sort of tuned out after I got to the moon and it was sort of underwhelming. Haven't heard anything about Legends, feel free to post infos.

So Legends is a revamped Classic server, ran by the P99 and Quarm guys, only it's officially licensed and they gave them the source code for the client and servers as well as all the files. The hook is it's "everquest for people who no longer have time to play everquest" so it's meant to be solo or small group content. (In reality raids still exist and you get more and better loot for doing group and raid content, so, think more EQ2 style "you can solo if you want or you can actually play the game".) You pick 3 classes at once, and your gear can be merged together like a Korean MMORPG. Dungeons and raids are mandatory instanced, too, with some talk about lockout timers.

They're planning on doing Kunark and maybe POP and then they have permission to do whatever they want storyline wise. Storyline-wise, I guess during one of the EQ expansions a boss from EQ2 flew through hell to escape the EQ2 playerbase and broke through in the EQ1 world, and this fucked everything up. The afterlife started spooging out into the middle of a zone near Qyenos and Freeport and it caused alternate timelines and all sorts of shit to break down. That's all official storyline stuff from "real" EQ.

Looking at the expansion release dates it's amazing how much shit WOW just flat out stole from EverQuest, even decades later.

The plot of legends is still kind up in the air, but they've hinted it has something to do with those divergent timelines and the afterlife seeping into the world. So, future adventurers (2026 era EQ players) empowering 1999 era EQ players? We'll know more today when the beta opens -- there's an NDA but I kinda expect leaks.
