@ToroidalBoat -Dawkins wishes that he had half of Sagan's intellect.

Regarding the former's tweets, he's only happy when he's bashing religion. I never heard Dawkins speak or see him write about science these days.

He's going the same obnoxious route that Christopher Hitchens had taken.

Related to Dawkins, he coined the term "meme"
This may explain the neckbeard subculture of memes and atheism.

Sagan was is nicer and better spoken. Maybe if Dawkins smoked pot and died before social media, he may have been remembered in a similar way.

Comparing them from the books I've read, I would say Dawkins easily has more intellect. I might be biased because the infamous ending to Contact.

This will be my last Dawkins post for a while. I don't want this thread to become about him exclusively.

So without further ado:

I pretty much said the same in the thread about the clock.
He wired a digital clock to a lcd, and did a horrible job of it.

Stupid teacher called the cops. Everyone acted stupid.

Has anyone here dealt with euphoric atheists who think that in the future there will be no more religion and everyone wil be athiest? I've seen a few myself but I never really deal with them it's not worth my time. But its funny how you think everyone is a middle class citizen who has access to all information and technology.

If you look at a map of atheism by country, you realize some very poor countries have a majority of atheisits

As a Brit, the whole "militant Atheist" thing is just baffling to me. In my experience here as a young man and as a teenager in school nobody believed in God or really gave a shit about the whole thing anyway; the whole religion question was just a non-entity. Even my mam is "religious" because she went to Catholic School as a kid and that's all it takes apparently, she couldn't tell you a damn thing about dogma.

Hell, I was happy to assume that nobody really believed in God until this one guy I know from work told me he'd been to Church on Sunday I honestly assumed it was a joke about how boring his weekend had been rather than genuinely believing him before he explained. I'd know him for about a year at that point too.

I think that the only places that militant atheism makes sense are the USA and the some Islamic countries. Everywhere else is quite secular with most people not publicly caring about the truth value of religion but rather about the cultural identity.

The amount of spite in this thread is getting a little ridiculous. It's getting hard for me to determine who's being legitimately angry and who's trolling now.

Yeah that makes sense, I honestly don't know if the whole religion thing in America is a stereotype or not because the whole thing just doesn't click with me or anyone I've ever known in my life and I thought us and the yanks were of a mostly similar mind-set.

I would say that the actual reason why the USA seems so religious is that it is in a unique extended culture war over religion. In American Christianity belief is more important than in many religions so evidence against the belief is more distressing than to an adherent to a ritual centric religion. Evidence for evolution makes it impossible for an American Protestant to practice their religion but does very little to a Jew or a Russian Orthodox Christian. This makes American culture more confrontational about religious belief whereas most countries will just quietly stop believing.
