Oh, it’s definitely the mother isolating her kids and creating a gilded cage for them. The father mostly ignores the problem. The father is in a hyper-competitive social world of brokerages and financial institutions and probably considers his home a cocoon from all that, so was mom’s job to do the domestic social stuff for the kids.

IDK anything about the parents backgrounds but if the mom and/or dad came from middle-class or white trash backgrounds they might have felt uncomfortable in the Greenwich milieu and therefore kept to themselves. I’m sure he does socialize within his work sphere. Really Greenwich is like one of those 1950’s towns. The wives, if they don’t work in the city, are supposed to build the social network domestically, maybe run an art gallery, serve on non-profit boards and volunteer at the day school. They are supposed to be as competitive on the home front as their husbands are at work. Eugenia’s mom did not fit that type.
