Eugenia is old enough to have been affected by 2000's diet culture on top of her obsessional disorder.

****A history lesson and sperging****

To be a size "0" was the hot girl size in the late 2000's especially. Many people think it was in the early 2000's but that's actually not true, being slim and curvy and having the J-Lo butt was a thing as with having a Beyonce type body in the early 2000's much more than looking stick thin. It was only in the late 2000's that the anorexia craze and this very niche pant size soared in popularity. Starting around 2007 in my opinion. In 2006 actresses were already developing anorexia at a startling pace, Hollywood women were becoming skeletons but it took another year to reach the general public. Eugenia would have been 13-15 during this time period and I'm absolutely positive she was sucked in.

I think I've said it before, but Ozempic-esque 2020's skinny these days is nowhere near late 2000's/early 2010's thin-ness. There was Eugenia type body's on the runway, on Myspace and in Hollywood. It was so bad. There was quite a few deaths I believe around this time in the modeling industry.

Anorexia isn't about being skinny, just like hoarding disorder isn't about collecting stuff and OCD isn't about hand washing. Hoarding, starving, and hand washing are just the particular forms the obsession takes. It's about a pathological need for control — either over the body itself or over the person's environment. I don't think someone whose brain demands that level of control can ever be normal without extensive, lifelong psychological treatment.
Yeah, this is the correct answer. Anorexia is more than seeking a body ideal, it's a complex mashup of control issues, low self-esteem, and OCD-style mental challenges. Someone might flirt with restricted eating, even making themself sick in the short term, to meet an idealized weight or clothing size, or perhaps for physical performance in specific athletic pursuits or to attain an opportunity in fashion or what-have-you, but a sustained eating disorder where the physical results are not attractive is different.

I've restricted and purged in the past because I needed to keep my weight and fat distribution a certain way for athletic performance. As soon as I switched away to sports and dance better suited to my frame, limb length, and height, I stopped restricting. The purging went away over time as I lost that learned sense of failure if I noticed even a slight gain (btw, I don't weigh myself and haven't in a few years, aside from in a medical setting - I highly recommend that). My cousin, someone genuinely in the anoxerica abyss, restricts for entirely different, non-controllable and less logical reasons, most rooted in her relationship with her parents and her need to control everyone and everything she can in her orbit to feel secure and valuable. She fears not being the perfect, beautiful little girl at the centre of her family universe eternally because she isn't confident that she can replace all that with adult skills.

Ok, someone's got to say it, so I will - being a size 0 - 2 is NOT inherently bad. For some folks, that's a healthy shape. Not everyone is large-framed, we aren't all curvy by nature, and we all carry our weight differently.

Slim or small framed does not equal eating disorder. There is a massive gulf between small-sized and bones jutting out from near total loss of body fat. On a personal note, as mentioned above I did previously struggle with bulimia for sports-related reasons - I needed to remain in the sub 110lbs region at 5'5" for performance - but my natural set point is around size 2 (though I often buy oversized since I prefer baggy and comfy!). I eat just fine now, as did my mom who was a natural size 0.

Fat positivity is out of control, but shaming women for not being curvy enough isn't any better. We're allowed to have times when our natural frame is popular too. I suppose I could make the argument that a curvy body type is just as unattainable for us, without taking unhealthy risks or harming our body image, as our narrow frame is for a woman with wider hips, but that's just life. We shouldn't be blamed for someone else's anorexia. There are lots of ruined bodies and lives in and outside the modelling industry even today as women chase ideals thier frames and fat storage don't conform to, be that small thighs or juicy butts. Oh, and guys also deal with changing physical beauty standards they can't meet.

Back just before 00 became the goal I knew a short Asian teen girl who was legitimately a size 0. This isn't about her. This is people who would naturally wear a 4-6 starving themselves to look like heroin junkies. It was bad.

The women I knew who were size zero naturally were petite women under 5'4. I've never met a tall woman who was a size zero without a serious eating disorder.

There are plenty of tall people, of every ethnicity, that are naturally a size zero, it has more to do with bone structure and frame width than height. I blame HAES for making people think size zero is some mythical pant size that only the most petite of people can naturally have and anyone taller than 5'4 will never ever be able to reach this unobtainable goal. Without powerlevelling too much, I personally know and have close relationships with people that have these types of builds. Some people are just built like birds.

Eta: to bring it back to Eugenia, I think she could be one of those naturally small framed people, but we've probably never seen her without some sort of eating disorder, so we'll never know. If she'd gotten help, she probably would've been able to coast on "skinny enough to notice but not so bad people say you need help."

Oh dear Gawd I step in this thread to be surrounded by actual children. A few infants even.

Sizes 0 and 00 were invented by the fashion industry in the 2000s because of vanity sizing. It's like in gaming where one might call easy mode normal and hard mode extra hard, just to spare the feels of the whiners.

Skinny has ALWAYS been in fashion. Don't let the HAES losers fool ya.
Of course some take it too far and you get skellies, but that culture has been around since there have been people.

Skinny has always been in fashion, but it was definitely more vicious in the 90s/2000s.

Yeah, I can definitely see teenage girls looking at this quite thin woman being called fat and porky and developing a distorted body image. Nowadays we've overcorrected into calling medically obese people "curvy," but this sort of thing wasn't much better.

That said, Eugenia was a prepubescent child in the 90s/early 00s. It's possible she might have been exposed to this sort of thing back then, but if a young child is focusing that much on her body image and comparing her body to celebrities, there are deeper issues going on.

Even back in the 50's doctors were suggesting women smoke to stay thin and curb appetite and it was a huge part of the advertising. I feel like it's not anything new but the phenomenon is just exaggerated by the constant presence of media in the daily lives of post cable era. Back in the day TV used to stop airing, then came 24 hours broadcast and a 6th channel then more, and now you can immerse yourselves in strangers opinions of you. There were crazy instances in the church of braggadocios anorexic nuns for centuries who would try to become holier than thou by claiming to survive on only the wafer at church. I'm sure someone did but many were caught eating and pretending to be bed ridden. Psychosocial insanity.

I can corroborate this timeline.

Nicole Richie in 2006:

NE cover from 2007:

This was about the time I was leaving high school and some of the girls in my class were going on water/ice/celery "diets" and posting Nicole Richie photos all over their Myspace pages.

I was looking for a certain B/W picture of Nicole where she's doing a Twiggy tribute, holding a daisy in front of her eye with one hand, and with the other arm horizontal in front of her chest with lucite bangles below and above her elbow. The photoshoot that launched a thousand "I am going to starve myself until my arms are perfect like hers" IMO.

my apologies for derailing but i went on a journey to find this picture you mentioned...i think it's this one

here is a link to a few from the same shoot:

Not the exact one I was thinking of, but damn close! Still gets the point across.

To bring it back to Eugenia, I do think the skelly celebs of that era combined with the scene girls of that era make up Eugenia's brand of arrested development and ED obsession.

On the subject of Eugenia, she hasn't posted on TikTok or Instagram for a solid month now. Is there anything new out there that might give a clue? Has anybody from Reddit made any fresh "wellness check" calls, as Reddit people are wont to do?

At this point in time I'm just waiting on the typical Eugenia loop of:

- get in trouble on website of choice
- have a tantrum, disappear from internet
-Of Herbs and Altars makes a video somehow cringier than the last
- Eugenia emerges at Disney World, somehow alive with no insulation in the Orlando heat

I remember seeing a while back on her Twitter that she hated how round and “fat” her face was. I think her body dysmorphia started with her round face, not necessarily these models from the early 2000s…

Thin's always been in fashion. Today's just warped because we accept obese as 'curvy.'

Edit: For those who're dumbasses, the above is Twiggy's Vogue shoot from 1970. aka: just as thin/thinner than 00/10 models. So stop being children and whining about modern culture being to blame for Eugenia being a self-starving nimrod.

The concept of a size zero started with Twiggy. Not the nineties. Can we now stop sperging about dress sizes and focus on the lack of Eugenia?

What if Dorian and Eugenia were in cahoots?

The cycle is so reliable that at this point it wouldn’t shock me.
