I knew a woman who died of dementia in a nursing home when she was only a few years from 100. She was under 70 lbs when she died, and her hands looked remarkably like this.

I dunno if sitting cross-legged would be more painful - it'd shift her body mass from center to one side or the other, taking pressure off the coccyx. It may actually be the more comfortable option.

not a yank either, but we do have designated sped hours in some supermarkets in the land of yooourop. basically the lights get dimmer and the music / whatever it is that's supposed to be played in the background are either muted or kept reasonably quiet.
i'm 101% sure she does that to show off the horseyness of her face. it looks more, uh, angular? when she opens her mouth, since her skin and whatever the fuck is left of the tissues beneath get taut
It varies, but she was at a huuuuuuuge store so they do, probably for PR. Having once accidentally gone to Walmart during theirs it is legit a more pleasant experience without the damn radio.
I forgot to explain! No radio, minimal and muted announcements, slightly dimmed lights. I didn't actually realize it was the autism hour until they turned everything on and I suddenly remembered why I hate Walmart.It suddenly dropped like 10 degrees overnight here so pretty much everyone was bitching about the weather. I'm from Our Glorious Nation of Yuropstan, too, never seen that, have to check if my country is already as far gone as having the Autism Super Hour in shops. And, as @Oracular Slug said, it sounds indeed like a more pleasant shopping experience than the one that i am used to.
