BRUSSELS — Top European Union officials have met with the bloc’s ambassadors to talk through what it would mean if Donald Trump wins the U.S. election, 12 EU diplomats told POLITICO.

"They're worried about trade but mostly [about] Ukraine,” one of the diplomats said, adding that Brussels foresees "abrupt changes on U.S. policy even before the inauguration." The diplomat, like others quoted in this piece, was granted anonymity to speak candidly.

The conversations revolved around two areas of uncertainty should the Republican candidate reclaim the White House: Whether Washington would continue to support Ukraine and the prospect of higher U.S. tariffs for all incoming goods.

The meetings, first reported by POLITICO’s Brussels Playbook, come as the fear of former U.S. President Trump returning to the White House permeates the highest echelons of power in Europe’s capital. Small groups of the 27 EU countries' ambassadors met Thursday and Friday with Brussels’ top officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s chief of staff, Björn Seibert, and representatives of several Commission departments covering topics from trade to energy.

The meetings come amid reports the bloc has set up a rapid reaction force to prepare for the fallout of the elections, colloquially known as the “Trump task force.” The EU wants to hit back hard on trade if Trump wins.

Trump has warned that he won’t defend “delinquent” NATO allies spending less than 2 percent of GDP on defense. And he has threatened to slap 10 to 20 percent tariffs on all imports to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. On Thursday, Trump called the EU a “mini China.”

“They don't take our cars, they don't take our farm products, don't take anything. You have a $312 billion deficit with the EU. You know, the EU is a mini — but not so mini — is a mini China," he said.

Three of the diplomats said that the discussions also touched upon the EU’s relations with China, with Trump set to antagonize Beijing even more. The meetings involve six Commission departments and cover topics such as trade, energy and digital policy — areas that could experience turbulence if Trump returns to the White House.

Even if a Harris presidency wouldn’t be as disruptive as a Trump administration, the EU executive wants to show it is on the ball whatever happens, one of the diplomats said.

“We are indeed preparing for the U.S. elections. All possible outcomes are considered. We are committed to maintaining a close partnership with the U.S.,” said Arianna Podestà, a spokesperson for the Commission.

Suppose Trump used all the troops stationed throughout Europe to deport unelected Brussels bureaucrats, before winding down the bases and leaving. Would normal EuroPeons throw parades for him?

"They're worried about trade but mostly [about] Ukraine,” one of the diplomats said
"Oh, noooooo!! They may no longer send billions of dollars endlessly into a proxy war with no stakes outside of the region and result in a resolution to the endless stalemate."

The EU is afraid of the US imposing tariffs while they charge VAT on imports even among their member states... Interdasting.
Mercedes and BMW might get upset if they lose sales. German financial interests have a very outsized influence when it comes to European decision-making.

Anyone have any numbers on much money Glock and H&K make in the USA compared to at home? I've always been curious as to how the numbers shake out given the differences in gun laws.

Better be getting ready. The more I see of the crashing and burning Harris campaign, the more I see a win for President Trump.

Harris has run he campaign like she has run her Vice-Presidency, just hasn't put enough effort into it. Trump, Vance, Tulsi Gabbard, and am sure others are out there every day, just about 24/7, rustling up those votes.

This is likely why 'they' didn't let Kamala become President when Biden dropped out. 'They' clearly don't believe she can do the job, just like Harris diddled around throughout her term as Vice-President.

I am still mystified how this demand is controversial.
Sure, the language and consequence are harsh, but the demand itself is absurdly reasonable.
Almost all European politicians either pretend to, or really believe, that big bad Putler will soon find the arc of the covenant and declare war against the continent.
And they still don't move their asses to increase defense-spending to a lame 2%.

The man was show-impeached over telling Ukraine to stop being a corrupt shithole if they want aid, and you think he "might" cut their funding if he gets in office?

No Shit, Sherlock.

Hey EU, all you have to do to ensure that Trump doesn’t tariff European exports is to remove your tariffs and “safety” regulations that stop American goods from being sold in your “country”. You should also stop fining American companies for not complying with selectively-enforced impossible-to-comply-with laws like GDPR and the DMA.

Also, pay for your own defense.

I don’t know. I also want Trump to win, but given what happened last election, I’m trying to prepare for a surprise upset.

The issue with these nations is if shit does hit the fan, it's going to be US service members and NATO countries that do spend 2% that bails those counties out.

We are literally dying for them.

The German economy entered negative GDP recently.

I'm sure they're panicking.

Trump was severely behind during 2020 election. Even Trump knew it. It's just that it was so fucking close and that's with the cheating.

Now, Trump is way ahead. The cheating will have to make up for hundreds of thousands of votes. Maybe millions.

Trump in 2020, didn't have much help from cultural and business elites.

And by his own will, was leading on election night before the counting stopped.

Do these Eurotrash anti-NATO scum not understand that Gunther Fehlinger prefers Trump to Kamala?

In theory, this shouldn't even be a problem. A new US admin comes in, the Euros find a way to coexist with it. Where there is a disagreement, they make an acceptable deal at the table. That's how normal politics should work. Do you have to care if the government changes in India or Brazil? You have to adapt, but it shouldn't be too hard as long as you manage to retain good diplomatic relationships.

However, EU politicos have bet everything they had on the Left, while they have nothing to offer to the Right. They don't even understand it, and they sure as hell don't communicate with it. They didn't even maintain proper channels with the RINOs, and they utterly reject MAGA. They still treat it as an irrelevant fringe group. They let their political system become dependent on a specific political arrangement in the US, and now that this arrangement is becoming shaky, they are panicking. If Trump ends up winning, he will have no reason to be lenient with them, and the Euros will have no offer or leverage to get a good deal out of him. There are pro-Trump politicos in Europe, but they are just as anathema to Brussels, so they will not be able to conduct negotiations on friendly terms.

TL;DR they are completely fucked, and they are starting to realize it.

Yes, embrace mighty Road and Belt.

Just as you laughed at the border wall, EU, you laughed at China and Russia because you believed Bidendaddy was the eternal Ghoul King of Wokekind.

The west is getting into a friendly fire clusterfuck and its glorious.
