Musk has removed the basic feature of lane assist from all new Teslas, apparently to force users to pay for a $99 / month subscription to FSD (full self driving) instead. Which does not do lane assist, it completely takes over driving including lane changes, distance to other vehicles and speed regulation, all of which it does very badly,

When questioned, Musk said the price would be increasing shortly.

I thought Mars didn't have a magnetic field and therefore zero protection from solar radiation and/or can no longer form an atmosphere as a result? I might be half remembering shit but it sounded like a huge barrier to doing anything if there's no core generating a magnetic field.

It's always bugged me, the idea that living anywhere other than earth not being pure shit. The sun being different, gravity being different. Even if it's not by much, the differences would surely suck. We would need to evolve pretty fast.

If we think life on earth is fragile then surely relying on a rush job terra forming (and surely anything within the duration of humans as a species counts as a rush job compared to geological time) and not having a magnetic umbrella overhead would make things suicidally precarious.

I know next to nothing about science/the cosmos but it's always sounded so dumb.
Correct, anybody living on Mars is going to be underground a la The Expanse.

I am a huge astronomy nerd and yeah, pretty much.

Mars has no magnetic field, which means that you'd get hit by solar radiation and solar winds would strip any atmosphere that Mars would ever have.

Mars is also a 9 month trip, in the best case (proper planetary alignment). That means if we send people there and anything happens, the people there are fucked. The people would have to live in a biodome of sorts (because of needing to breathe and be protected from radiation), preferably underground. They'd have to grow their own food. And there's really no reason to because it's generally not going to be sustainable. We'd have to send provisions every now and then as things are lost, and if Earth died out, then Mars wouldn't last much longer.

I love the idea of going to Mars from a challenge perspective and because lots of cool shit would probably be developed and useful for other things (similar to the lunar mission). However, people living there is sending them to a death sentence and getting people back from Mars would be absurdly difficult (would have to get enough fuel to get them back to Mars for the return trip). So yeah, a manned mission to Mars is a bad idea unless you are willing to send people to their deaths for really no reason

IMO, Venus is the second most habitable place for humans in the Solar System. You know all that follows but for the benefit of non-astronomy nerds: Earthlike gravity and temperatures in the upper atmosphere, and as a bonus, nitrogen and oxygen are lifting gases in an atmosphere comprised of CO2 so the colony's breathable air would help keep it afloat.

It also has an induced magnetosphere thanks to its massive atmosphere and electrical charge,

To be honest Titan might even be more viable than Mars, having an atmospheric pressure higher than Earth is incredibly helpful for the safety of colonists.

So he's taking a product that he poorly made, and now charging for it while making it worse.

THAT'S OUR ELMO!

Lane assist that some Hyundai EV would have. All these oligarchs chase subscriptions, sometimes too far with the case of Amazon Prime, but charging a sub for lane assist is scabby and mean. I suppose he wants his billion dollars or whatever his payment is to be.

Thinking he desperately needs regular cash flow. Not a good sign.

A base model Toyota Corolla has lane assist ffs.
Removing the indicator stalk was bad enough but people will literally choose a different car over this, it’s a bridge too far.
Nobody wants FSD enough to pay for it except some musk fanboys, it’s shit, and even if you pay the money you still won’t get lane assist.

I've just realised that this won't fly in the EU cos lane keeping keeping systems are legally mandated on new cars as part of the ADAS wank that was heaped onto them in 2022.

lmao at this video

Finally, a fleet of robots that can toss some snow around for me! When will this ultimate helper finally be available for purchase, you ask?

The headline is fake news, Musk said "next year". Just like "current year", it's... a fluid variable.

Ah he thought of that. Instead of lane keep which steers for you, it now has lane departure warning, you know the kind that just beeps or vibrates the steering wheel if you start to cross over a line without indicating. That’s enough to satisfy the regs, but it’s no use as a driver convenience.
