Really they’re going to try banning DeepSeek? I think the cat’s out of the fucking bag on that one.
IMO, it already was when that (US IP based) DDOS attack on their platform started.
Currently the reality of the situation is that if you want to learn something about AI and LLMs, pragmatically, you read chinese papers. This is because the chinese actually release a lot of genuinely interesting and cutting edge scientific papers, while corporations like OpenAI and Meta release little to nothing. If you actually follow and read what they release, they are very open and pragmatic about AI research, and they do very little hype in general. Remember the Hype around and OpenAIs "Her" voice multimodal model? Where is it? With the integrity that company has shown (complete with sending API moderation to completely unsupervised 3rd parties and a whistleblower "
comitting suicide") I'd not even be surprised at this point if that whole thing was made up and they just had some actress reading a script. Without any papers or technical reports, it's impossible to tell.
So what do you do when you can't beat the competition fair and square? Adverts, propaganda and buying politicans. It's really that simple. You'll even still have gibbering idiots (some even in this very thread) defending you as you rape their freedoms, because you're not chinese. "Dumb Fucks", to quote Zuckerberg.
The joke is that you can download these chinese tianmen evil xi dictatorship models to your computer and run them at home, which pretty much is as free as it gets (the chinese won't even know you run them, let alone know what you do with them) while with OpenAI, you can just sign up and hope you don't round afoul of one of their various and complicated censorship rules which are just bound to get worse if they get their government-backed monopoly. You'll also just have to trust them with your data as there is no other choice. Dumb fucks, indeed.
Want to hear something even FUNNIER though? Microsoft (a software company heavily invested in OpenAI) runs Deepseek models on their Azure cloud, which they can do, as the chinese released the weights, for free. They don't even practice what they preach.
