Elite: Dangerous

It's got a great foundation but.. that's all it has, a great foundation. It's a house without any trusses or walls. It's barebones as fuck and there's not actually much to do at all. Grab yourself a copy of X3 or hell even Freelancer or Darkstar One (which can be had for like a two bucks on the Steam Sale bundled with the classic Patrician III as well) instead for now and wait for an expansion or two to come out first, or keep staring into the window of Star Citizen.

With the sheer scale of Elite's map, I think it actually has the potential to be far more interesting then Star Citizen if its expansions are good.

The problem is that while there is scale, it's not interesting scale. Every system feels the same, procedual generation failing to produce anything but a constant feeling of been there done that. And it all feels so empty and sterile. Maybe the expansions will add to it, but the fact is I see no reason to play it over the aforementioned X3, Freelancer, or hell even the older Elite games tbh. Not to mention the always online component is a finicky bastard that even after release loves to drop people's connections.

The old Elites were groundbreaking games that pushed the envelope of what computers were thought capable of at the time. But these days, with space combat/trading games being a dime-a-dozen, there's really nothing that sets Elite above the rest other than universe scale, and more isn't necessarily better.
 
I remember a few months ago /v/ was frothing at the mouth at this game

Now everyone is talking about how they're waiting for Star Citizen.

I've been having a lot of fun with the game. It's definitely a grind, but every MMO is, and it's a lot of fun to get lost in the sheer scale of it. I hope Frontier introduces more actual story elements that you can get into without needing to coordinate with other players.

Does anyone here still play? How are you liking Powerplay? It's been super confusing and weird for me so far, and I think that's the general impression the player base has of it.
