So I just saw the trailer for the new Metroid game.

People... don't seem to happy about it. And I can see why. This... just doesn't look like a Metroid game at all.

Some of the reactions were kinda funny at least.

Yeah... speaking of that...

The manchildren are out in droves and setting up petitions demanding Metroid: Federation Force be cancelled. Yes, seriously.

Now, I'm not excited about the game at all. I loved the Prime trilogy and all that and I was hoping to see a return of that. To see Federation Force is kind of a slap in the face for Metroid fans, but I can deal with it. Personally, and this is coming from a former Nintendo fanboy, the Nintendo camp is fucking pissed off because Sony had an awesome show, Microsoft killed it too, and Nintendo? They got a new Star Fox game, a co-op Zelda title and what essentially looks like Animal Crossing: New Leaf 2.0. Nintendo pretty much showed they have no faith in the WiiU and are just coasting until E3 2016 and relying on 3DS games.

Plus, I think it's a bit of envy mixed in. Think about it- Fallout 4 comes out and its got that free minigame app. Final Fantasy 7 is announces, and here is some derpy chibi-looking FF game to tide you over. Same thing with Kingdom Hearts. Hell, even Hitman has that Sniper app game while we wait for the real game to come out in December. Metroid gets a chibi looking game and... that's it. No real flagship title, just... four power suit characters kicking around a giant ball.

I'm mostly indifferent about the new Metroid and I understand the disappointment of not getting a real Mertoid, I personally would love to have a real 2D Metroid, but I think people could have handled it better by not chimping the hell out as if they're channeling Chris's hatred for Sonics blue arms like the petition demanding Nintendo to cancel the game.

-EDIT-
Beaten to it.

Don't say that, I was so excited... *sigh* You are probably right, though. AC and DoC were pretty awful.
I'm hoping I'm wrong. FFVII was a great game, and there's a lot of reasons why a remake could, if anything, supersede the original.

As much as I enjoyed FFVII, I'll admit the title has a lot of weaknesses. The graphics are clunky, the combat is often a chore, battle animations often go beyond self parody, and the localization was quite cheap. All of these are things that could easily be fixed.

What worries me is that the people at Square who worked on the game don't know which parts of FFVII are worth changing, and which are worth keeping around. The love triangle between Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa worked because the characters acted like adults and all three were multifaceted and underwent arcs that profoundly impacted them as human beings without compromising their core complex personalities. Cloud put up a front as a no nonsense stoic badass which masked a deep self identity crisis. Aerith is a silly, carefree nymph whose playful personality contrasts with her hard upbringing and the tragic destiny of her people. Tifa at first appears like a dynamite, barroom sex kitten, but beneath that layer is a true Yamato Nadeshiko, if you'll forgive the degree of japanofaggotry in that sentence.

But does Square even remember that anymore? In Advent Children, Cloud spent the entire film moping like the second two discs of FFVII never happened. It's one thing to be emotionally damaged, but he acted like saving the world a second time wasn't even that important. Aerith went from a playful minx to Rei Ayanami faster than a weaboo in a love pillow. Tifa had no personality at all, and both she and Cloud acted so sexless, someone watching with no prior knowledge of the game would never believe FFVII climaxed with those two fucking the pain away in an airship.

Now maybe things have changed. Maybe the people working on the remake'll actually remember the original game had a sense of humor, a sense of vulgarity, a sense of romance and sexuality, a main character who actually had a reason to be the main character, and actual motivations for wanting to murder the main villain: All things which are missing to a greater and greater degree in every game they've made for the last decade and a half. However, Square has to give a little for me to not expect another Advent Children. Goodwill from the past can only get you so far.

Edit:

That said, I actually did like Crisis Core. It felt a lot closer to what made FFVII great, almost as if the people who made it actually remembered the characters personalities and how to build a narrative. Hell, it's even a prequel, so unlike Advent Children and Dirge of Cerebus, it doesn't render the party's accomplishments in the first game totally meaningless and ruin the beauty of the ending.

I wouldn't call Crisis Core a great game, but if the FFVII remake at least reaches the level of Crisis Core, I'll at least be content rather than despondent.

Looks like Nomura is already talking about changing Story and Gameplay elements:

http://otakuusamagazine.com/LatestN...asy-VII-Remake-Will-Alter-Story-and-6570.aspx

He says he wants to make "something that suits these times". @*Asterisk* already got the meat of the argument, so I'll just add in my two cents:

The Gameplay would be easy: Make it more fluid. Don't change the type of battle system, don't make it a third person shooter or the FF7/KH gameplay Crisis Core had. You can keep the same type of gameplay, just make it go at a slightly faster pace. Keep Materia, keep the limit breaks, etc. When it comes to difficulty, however, I could see a few changes happening. FF7 wasn't hard 90% of the time. It had a sense of flow. Unless you escaped from every battle you went into, you didn't really need to grind. That is, up unitl the Materia Keeper, a boss added in for the US version(correct me if I'm wrong). This guy was such a pain in the ass, and was the first enemy I died fighting against. After grinding for an hour or so, I finally beat him, but he really did shove a wrench into the flow. There was also the two headed Ice/Fire Dragon in the Ice caves, who I had the same problem against, who was also added in for the US version. I'd say either remove these battles, or smooth them out to make their difficulty more adapted to where they are in the game, and I wouldn't have a problem with it.

On the story front, I have no idea what he's planning on doing, but I have a feeling the romantic side of the story is going to end up with a lot more like a harem anime.

Yeah, my disappointment for this new Metroid game was like, "Wow, new Metroid.......oh, not really, bugger" and that's it. My love of the Metroid games is epic, but if I'm not getting a new, proper game, then I'm not getting it.
The existence of a game that I don't want doesn't deny the existence of game I do. The whole petition devs with unreasonable demands cos we're in the huff about something thing is infuriating and is literally on the level of Chris' blue arms crusade.

This E3 was way too competent, I watch this shit for the absurdity and awkwardness of some of the other events. I can get information about which games are coming out in easier ways than watching hours and hours of corporate bullshitters talking. Still watched basically everything though since I'm a waste of space.
Luckily it was so competent and generally good that I can live with the lack of "ONE MIRRION TROOPS".
The NWC was fun but I can't really say I was excited by any of the announcements since I care so little about big modern AAA games.
What did excite me though was Cuphead, new Star Ocean, Enter the Gungeon, FO4 and Soma.
Weirdly the ones I reacted the most positively to were Cuphead and Star Ocean. Cuphead just looked completely amazing from the gameplay trailers and Star Ocean because for some unfathomable reason I liked The Last Hope quite a bit.
I was also somewhat impressed by Day[9]'s hosting of the PC portion, he handled the awkwardness and technical difficulties admirably even if the conference was far too long and light on content.
In closing I think I'm in agreement with most that Sony did the best simply because of all the surprising reveals of highly anticipated things.

@Dodge2461, I understand why you have nostalgia for the original game's combat, but I really feel making FFVII an ARPG'll be fine. There are plenty of games that benefit from turn based combat (FFT, X-Com, Chrono Trigger), but games made with the ATB system were trying to create rapid, fast paced combat while overcoming substantial hardware restrictions.

To me, that's what separates a good change from a bad change. Those who understand the material have to know well enough it worked, but not be so blinded by nostalgia that they shun new ideas when a better way comes along. Keeping the ATB system for FFVII is like keeping the fixed camera, or the dialogue in blue text boxes, or the characters as origami figures.

Yu Suzuki just retweeted this, amazing!

@*Asterisk* Honestly, if it plays well, I'll be fine with it. And I agree, I'm fine with it not being exactly like the originals(hell, I assumed it was a given that there weren't going to be any fixed cameras and text boxes). Maybe they'll improve the battle system in Crisis Core. I'd be fine with that.

EDIT: Also, is it coming to PC? They said "Play it first on PS4", and most of the FF games are on PC, so it should be a shoe-in, right?

Also, Nomura has confirmed cross-dressing Cloud will be in the game.

Thank Jenova. Cross-dressing Cloud was hilarious. Having FFVII without the Don Corneo level would be like having Star Wars without Han shooting first and apologizing for the mess.

Am I the only one cautiously enthusiastic for Federation Force? It'd be an interesting opportunity to explore the Metroid universe from a new perspective and with some new ideas. But you know what has me even more psyched than that?

Prime.

It's a Metroid Prime game. Which means it's choosing to ignore Other M even fucking existing.

Glorious.

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam,
Oh boy am I ever excited for this. I don't usually get very excited about video games but I'm a major fan of the Red Orchestra games and I've been wanting a Vietnam themed one from them forever.

I can be a Jungle Operator! YEAAHHH

Why are people assblasted about it even existing?

I can see bitching about the fact they aren't getting another installment of what they actually do want, but are they really going full metal autism because some arguably unrelated game just happens to be getting the name?

Yeah, it's dumb. I would've wanted to see either another 2D Metroid or a good 3D Metroid in the same vein as the Prime series, but the people petitioning to have it cancelled are being incredibly obtuse. I suppose the line of thinking is that if they stop now they can devote the resources they would've put into finishing the game into making a proper Metroid game, but I dunno. A better idea would probably be to let Nintendo know that this isn't what Metroid fans are interested in.

It's kind of sad because I bet this is the most passionate any of these spergs have been about anything ever. It's a fucking Nintendo game.

After seeing people getting hyped over the new Doom I checked the footage and was sorely disappointed. While many people think the foundation of Doom is gore (that the footage had aplenty), I think freedom of movement, ambitious level design and excellent pacing are the elements that made Doom such a enjoyable game. It was a game that played as fast as you could play it and didn't hold your hand. The experience you got out of it was determined by your own skill level and once you got good the game flowed amazingly. The new Doom seems to constantly rob player of control because of cinematic kills and weapons are switched in awkward slow motion that dissects the gameplay. Chainsaw was particularly horrible in this regard.

Original Doom(s) also used colors better. It made the enemies pop out of background, so when you faced a roomful of Pinkies you instantly knew how fucked you were. New Doom uses a standardized mess of brown palette like every other shooter out there.

I know this sounds like a petty whining from a old grognard, but it just blows my mind how most people equate Doom to excess gore and disregard all the other, sometimes subtle, aspects that made it such a great, fluid and rewarding game.

This. Doom had a lot more action and violence than actual gore. Even Quake and Half-Life 2 were more gory, and neither of those particularly stand out as far as gore is concerned.

Mostly because the past Metroid game was Other M for the Wii, and is disliked for the story and be more action heavy. The perception (outside the deluded nintendo fanboys that thought the WiiU was successful enough to get more games including for a franchise that is not so hot to beging with (Other M numbers were bad)) is that Nintendo truly doesn't have idea of what the hell use Metroid for.

Reggie comparing Federation with Splatoon doesn't help
