Too bad Kitfox sucks because the tileset is pretty good.
I ent ever played the Steam version, it does look like a dope tileset, but I don’t like forgotten beasts in it. I watched a few Youtubers play it, and every single forgotten beast design just does not really match what’s being generated.

Also, I’m a simple racist man, I want Huwhite dwarves. Now unfortunately, Taryn made it so dwarves will be darker skinned if they live closer to the equator (based?) . Problem is, your likely to got non white dwarves and get filthy chestnut or sepia dwarves.

In ascii, I don’t give a shit, because it’s using the world‘s most powerful graphic engine, my brain. So I can easily just picture all my dwarfs, perfect Toilkian White. But with the graphic set, they’re rendered accurately which sometimes just looks gross when they have like a really offputting skin color, and they all look like Indians. It’s hard to be upset when a forgotten beast comes in and wrecked them all when they look like jeets. I end up siding with the forgotten beast.

Something else that’s also super disappointing is how they deal with multi tile forgotten beasts. They still only occupy one tile (fair just for game mechanics sake) but when they’re dead, to make sure they can fit on a single tile they literally will just cut the forgotten beast as a single tile so it looks like a glitched out NES game.

They broke the actual game, though.
I don’t think it’s been broken in any real way since KitFox”girl” have taken over, unless I’m missing something?

Well, my custom tileset does cause the “follow dwarf” to be offset by a crazy amount and I can’t read menus without zooming out….

My biggest disappointment is the fact it’s STILL broken in many ways (legacy bugs).

Lost a human caravan due to one of them getting stuck up a tree with a camel. Shit like that I really think should have been fixed like patch 1 after they started selling this. I have just started making a real military and I fear I’m seeing some of the old military bugs that made me stop playing originally.

I absolutely loathe the controls of the Steam version, I miss keyboard shortcuts like you wouldn't believe. For example, it was so easy to [.b]uild [d]oor, now I have to hit [.b] [p] [r] just to place a single door. More than half the alleged "shortcuts" want me to have both hands on the keyboard, but a bunch of functionality relies on me using a mouse. It's so fucking stupid.

t. A retard with 750 hours in the Steam version.

I just recently booted into an old v47. Save and holy fuck, I couldn’t remember the old controls, had to google how to go up and down levels.

I remember playing right up till the steam release thinking I’ll buy the steam release. But then I did more research on Kitfox and Taryn was going on podcasts and shows saying “this is only graphical. Will not fix any old bugs” and I nope.exe the fuck out.

Only started playing again recently due to the new siege stuff and I think Taryn has hired a tranny dev to fix the old bugs finally.

The siege update is been peak kino, even if i still have an autistic meltdown every time i set my masons only to realize the fucking skills dedicated to make the fucking furniture is called stone CARVING and stone CUTTING is something completely fucking different and masonry now is just architecture, anyways despite that the siege weapons are kino now, no longer do i have to desing the fortress around the thing but just place it and it will aim automatically, much more confortable, i also feel markdwarves less retarded but i havent tested them too much yet, i've seen them creating distance when battling troglodites instead of running at them to bash them to death so thats a good sign i think. Im happy with it so far.

Dorf homosexuality is quite old. It was introduced as an undocumented change in v40.0.
What is recent is animal homosexuality, i dont know if they changed that but when the steam version first started you could possibly have gay or asexual animals leading to unfortunate circumstances of having the last 2 exotic animals of each gender and one of them happening to be gay and so never breeding.

Sounds like a job for dfhack.

I haven't checked the current version but it was still a thing last month. Dwarf therapist makes it easy to designate these for butchering. Or...
Sounds like a job for dfhack.
I justify this in my head that the dwarves hire a wizard to do that work. "Affix girdle of non-faggotry." Also how I justify the use of reveal (although seldom down to the circus). Oh, our geomancer did it.

Nah this was in the game before the steam version it used to be very rare but it did happen so they might have changed the chance, it was the reason to always bring two rosters or ganders on embark to start the egg/poultry industry in case one of them ends up being a faggot

Ok after playing a while on the nes update here's my autistic ramblings:

Despite being 3 years now since release there's still not a discard buttom (that existed in version 47 btw) to return back to world gen if you didnt liked the world, this is specially annoying to me because im the only lunatic that enjoys playing in glaciers and the fuckers sometimes refuse to generate.

Bolt throwers are OP, outrageously so, in my adventures to wage war agaisnt the goblins and undeads bolt throwers made the sieges incredibly easy, even after bumping the invader numbers to the point of causing FPS death the bolt throwers teared through them like a hot knife on butter (and since goblins bring armor that just means free ingots to make more bullets for the fucking thing), instead of bringing a weapon to train melee dwarves now i found is easier to start with a few novice siege operators, make a siege operator guildhall and watch as the skill spreads among the dwarves and increases by itself without too much setup (this works with any skill btw)
i did a test on the untamed wilds by constructing a small wooden block square in a 3x3 stair, and on top a bolt thrower with fortifications supplied with wooden bolts, chopped all the trees in the surface to agitate the wildlife and watch as meat delivered straight into my doorstep, even with the shittiest bolts possible, the ammount of destruction it deals is insane, the catapult and ballista are better balanced and less broken.

Speaking of sieges, the new engineer enemies and battering ram need a buff, they are too slow and even with huge sieges their effect is barely noticeable, battering rams are so slow the siege is over before they can even move, they are just free iron ingots.

Markdwarves are infact less retarded now, you can use them as a normal military and they will prioritize shooting over melee, i'd say they are better than melee dwarves now as with 3 or 4 they'll kill the enemy before it gets close, you'd probably still want some fortifications agaisnt forgotten beasts and some melee distraction but you dont need to make them something insane like before. A tip, if your markdwarves are not training do not give them training bolts AND combat ones, make a squad specifically made for training and once they are good enough throw them in the combat one or make a pit below the archery target so the bolt doesnt break, dwarves are autistic and cant handle 2 different types of bolt similar how you cant make a miner a pickaxe warrior and expect him to use his working pick as a combat one.

So yeah markdwarves are finally useful and the minigun is busted, the goblins cant use vehicles and trolls cant build for shit.

Huh interesting, i always thought it was in case one of them dies.

Glaciers might have been my favorite embark if I did not enjoy catching and taming giant fauna in savage bioms so much
My favorite are volcanos with tons of metal and flux. I jack up the savagery and megabeasts accordingly. I don't mind dying to sieges or some hideous forgotten beast, but I don't want to die to having nothing but shitty copper weapons.

Copper hammers and maces are basically as effective as other metals, blunt weapons are nearly equal asides from adamantine making unusable blunt weapons!
Also they're good against undead by not cutting them into tiny little pieces that all start attacking you immediately, but sometimes you need sharp.

Also one good use for adamantine hammers: give one to your hammerer so he doesn't just massacre all your misbehaving dwarves by excessive enthusiasm.
If i see tetrahedrite i use the silver to turn it into warhammers or maces, silver is really good for bashing, luv silver, luv me hammers, 'ate goblins, simple as.
Very fond of silver hammers as a starting weapon. They should handle nearly anything you need early game, even if you're having to deal with undead.

Also PROTIP: bring along copper and tin ore. It's cheap and now you have all you need to start out with bronze weapons. Tetrahedrite and cassiterite will do you especially if you aren't starting out somewhere insane where you actually have the time to smelt into bars (and harvest the silver as a bonus and I dunno make hammers with it or something). I also go through the preferences of each dwarf on the embark party and bring along ore or stone (or plants or whatever miscellaneous objects) so each dwarf gets something they like.

Yeah silver hammers are the shit, I tend to make a beeline for a hammerdwarf military before I start branching out on weapon types since it's easy to get going (and saves iron for rushing early armour). Won't forget the time years ago a random fucking speardwarf stabbed and pinned a flying forgotten beast (that also shot webs) I had early in one fort. If he didn't do that, my fortress likely would've died since it was so early on and I was still retarded.
Immediately made him the top brass of the military, I think by the time I stopped playing that save he got a kill on a roc, two more forgotten beasts, and a whole load of other shit.

EDIT: Also what's the recced version nowadays? I notice anything v50 or beyond doesn't have a LNP, which is annoying as a tard who uses a tileset and DFHack for QoL.

For swords. Is there a big difference between copper and iron? i’m just thinking that in real life I think it’s easier to get copper to be razor sharp but also it’s a lot lighter than iron so maybe it does less damage because of the mass behind the swing?

I always embark with peasant dwarves, i like to think they are just thrown into the wilderness and have to figure it out, makes seeing the original 7 grow more interesting and i assing them jobs according to what their dreams are (and of course i make them nobles so they remain relevant, even if there's a migrant with better skills for the job)

Also i give my hammerers the best hammers because it builds character, sometimes there's a vampire or a visitor that drank too much and punched a chicken to death and needs a head rearrangement, i dont think i ever had accidents with them killing ramdom dorfs, maybe because i always make a prison once i open the caverns (wich is usually the same day i embark because fuck having to do a fuel industry, i want magma) and that prevents them from getting executed. I like to have the prison in the middle of them so the prisioners know they are going to be fed to the freakish spider made of vomit if they missbehave.

Iron (and steel) is better for cutting weapons period, copper is best for crossbows as they are considered a blunt weapon in melee range, i never make swords because they arent too dwarfy for me, i only use them if i have foreigners living in my fort, is either axes or hammers for dorfs, like god intended.

I don't trust the dwarven justice system much at all and often don't even bother with it. My general cure for misbehaving dwarves is what I call magma therapy. Since I like volcano embarks, I always build a therapy bridge on the edge of it.

Problem dwarves get assigned to a special squad and stationed on the bridge. There's a switch to trigger the bridge, usually way down so the Urist assigned to this duty doesn't actually have to watch the results.

Flip the switch, and the bridge launches the dwarves into magma, curing them of their misbehavior. A nice side effect is sometimes they discover the caverns on their way down.

Bronze and iron are about the same in terms of cutting/piercing power, steel is crazy powerful, and adamantine removes armor as a mechanic.
Copper is more dense than iron (7850 iron vs 8930 copper) so it is actually better for blunt weapons in my experience. But I don't play vanilla usually, I like to mod with better weapons and armors so the combat mechanics aren't trivialized by steel/adamantine squads taking on multiple hundreds of enemies.

The other good thing about copper blunt weapons is that they are so cheap, you can bring a lot of them with you on embark if you want to have a basic militia set-up very quickly.

I cucked, I bought the steam version. After 17 years I finally gave Taryn some money… (and Kitfox and Gaben)

I am having !!!FUN!!! But honestly, the main reason for getting it was that I wanted to get DFhack working. I thought I would also be able to get to a therapist working but I don’t know what’s happened. It seems like nobody’s updating it as the latest memory maps for DFTherapist are still stuck on like. 53.02 (there is a PR to make it .05)
