Dune: Awakening is an open world, multiplayer survival game on a massive scale.

More than just survival, Dune: Awakening offers a large-scale, persistent and highly immersive world with social hubs bustling with other players, server-wide politics and intrigue, and a cinematic storyline that will leave you at the edge of your seat.

The Fremen have vanished. Paul Atreides was never born. Lady Jessica obeyed the Bene Gesserit and gave birth to a girl. Duke Leto Atreides survived the assault on Arrakeen and is now locked in a brutal conflict with the Harkonnen over Arrakis and its precious spice.

In this unique but still familiar take on the iconic sci-fi universe of Dune, you begin as a prisoner sent to Arrakis to uncover the mystery of the Fremen’s disappearance. Following in the footsteps of the mysterious desert tribe, you will learn the true meaning of desert power as you rise from a nameless survivor to becoming an agent of the Atreides or the Harkonnen.

Alone, with friends, or any of the hundreds of players you share Arrakis with, can you survive the most dangerous planet in the universe?

Funcom is a Norwegian company that previously made conan exiles, another survival/pvp/basebuilding/enslavement type mmo rpg.

Dune awakening just had its beta weekend. I have heard and experienced mixed opinions on it. It seems to be going for a more pve/story focus than conan exiles based on the marketing push. One of the issues with Conan was the Rust type issue that early organisers and players had such a massive resource advantage they would enslave all new players, leading to increasingly autistic and sweaty play thats unhealthy for a proper MMO ecoystem.

As part of the beta Dune did a pvp event where they seemingly threw money at any streamers they could regardless of relevance, to fairly disastrous results due to poor balance, common bugs and terrible latency.

As far as base building and PVE, I have a video covering the first 5 hours or so, I also got to the sandbike outside this video which I can say has actual physics which is surprising for an MMO, so a W there.

Game releases June 10th, but you can get early access june 5th by paypigging more. This feels especially shitty for a game of this genre given the extreme early mover advantage I mentioned before and in my video.

If any kiwis want to make the sneedreich in this game then let me know. All my niggas heil harkonnen. The sneed must flow.

I'm kinda annoyed you can't just go with the fremen and jihad everyone out of existence with a spice orgy. I'd be in for a sneedsietch although i do have a soft spot for Atriedes.
same, I bitch for a bit about the idea the fremen are dead but its clear from the story of the beta i played that
the players themselves become the fremen, with female bene geserit daughter of jessica as your pagan oracle mommy

Everyone has a soft spot for the atreides, but way less when its no longer the "once and future king" since in this timeline they arent wiped out. Idk maybe I just have mmo brain about harkonnen being the less picked faction sort of like horde was originally and therefore more fun in the long run. Also from playtime i didnt capture in my vid it seems you can get rep with both factions maybe? but then like guilds are aligned? Theres a lot of questions remaining about long term player v player and guild content not answered in the beta.

Elaborate on the slavery aspect, there was a Kung fu MMO that kept your character in world as an NPC when you logged out and other players could literally kidnap and sell you into slavery and you'd have to work your way out or escape when you logged back in.

its not an actual in game mechanic, I speak in terms of social gaming. Survival MMO's like this, such as conan, work in a way that early movers and organizers monopolize land and resources so that they can have an immense advantage over new players to the point that the ones who want to survive become essentially slaves.

This isnt like kenshi where there are extensive actual slavery mechanics. Its like social slavery..... like real life lmfao.

I feel like this iteration is trying to push against this by heavy zone segmentation, focus on single player story and pvp limitation. We will see. I put it in the title because despite it just having a beta weekend, the structure of the game presages a similar dynamic. I kinda like the free market social aspect of some games, but understand why its not healthy for an mmo ecosystem cus who wants to be the new guy, right?

The game has ranks in guilds and especially in property ownership so you can have an actual social hierarchy of permissions and resource usage. Something essential for a survival mmo like this as it was in conan.

Is the combat dog shit like in Exiles?
As for PVP (which is what matters) the first vid I posted seems to show yes. It fucking sucks. We can cope about improvements in the next month but watch it for yourself.

As for PVE, its action but moderately simple. One question from my experience is what is the the actual advantage between ranged and melee, cus one can imagine melee being required for shielded enemies or when melee ones attack, but everyone else can be shot. Overall it feels better than some other mmo's i played but obviously nothing like any singleplayer game. The game seems to want to have a lot of PVE from random scavengers to outposts to dungeons, but the issue lies in their respawn timers. I cover this in my video more.

Good old Age of Wushu/Age of Wulin, one of the most unique MMOs I have ever played, but sadly ruined by greedy publishers like always, same as Archeage.

Back to Dune, I read that the launch is probably going to be pretty borked, judging by the miserable time streamers had with the game and its numerous gamebreaking bugs.

yeah it aint lookin good. In my vid even the tutorial cutscenes were popping in like crazy a month out. I think overall the mechanics are there, and also ironically the server stability. But the PVP animations/balance are a total disaster.

I just dont get why dune. Was that some contractual obligation to release this game? They cant hope to dethrone rust, and witg the release in this rough shape with seemingly p2w... It will maybe slightly top its beta numbers but then take a dive and hover maybe around 1000 players for few months.

yes obviously. This was part of the IP push due to the recent movies. It's why the strategy game came out too. They sold it off to everyone. tbh funcom was a remarkably wise choice given their history in survival games. Lmao imagine if they sold the mmo rights to someone else. My point isnt to cope, its just to say, 2 dune movies came out, they are trying to monetize the IP and here we are.

To be clear with all its issues, I didn't see any pay to win beyond the early access. Actual in game power didn't appear to be for sale for now.

Funcom + Conan Exiles with more sand + Paypig advantage = dead in a couple of months, by my reckoning

We could have had another Westwood-styled RTS. We could have even had a half-way decent extraction shooter (FPS + Mordhau + running around Arrakeen and it's outskirts) if things were that desperate. But all we get is a re-skin of Conan Exiles. Its pretty grim when the only decent Dune game we've had since the franchise's resurgence is the one based on a board game.

Interesting that they went this route for the story. Not saying it's bad as it does free them up for things outside the path to God-Emperor plot, but there are more than a dozen other books spanning a couple thousand years before and after the main Dune novels they could've chosen from.

Even if you don't think Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson's writing is a match for Frank, they laid out a pretty good framework for the world before Leto/Paul, the early days of the major guilds/factions, the great houses before the Harkonnens were irredeemably evil and sworn enemies of the Atreides, etc.

Yeah, I really don't get how people are still dumb enough to give Funcom money after all the shit they've pulled that's well documented. To my knowledge they've never kept a single promise.
