Not Productive is a side project initially created by TJ Kirk to be a review website much like Channel Awesome, but actually cool. It was basically intended to be the badass alternative to Channel Awesome. TJ raised 20,000 dollars to make Not Productive a reality and it ended up living up to its name.

:story:

The difference is night and day here.

What kind of content is even on Not Productive? Is it what I think it is and just videos of TJ yelling at his mom to make him tendies?

Does TJ even still have fans? The man is so obnoxious and untalented and the nerd-yelling-on-youtube bubble burst a long time ago
Sadly yes.

"I'm just a normal introverted 18 year old guy who spends most of his time online or in game. I spent most of my childhood without friends to play with (after school). My role models are TJ and George Carlin, both of which largely influenced my teen years. It goes without saying that I'm an Atheist"

*Cringe heart attack*

So in other words, he's not a normal 18 year old?

I'll shed some light on Not Productive. It goes back a ways.

Before Youtube TJ worked a lot of shitty menial jobs at companies that his dad ran. He had basically no work ethic and frequently tells stories about how he'd find ways to avoid working. A good example is how he said he once worked at a call center and found ways to blow off work early by claiming he could get some of the girls there fired if they didn't share their sales with him.

At around the time he started his youtube channel TJ was learning about web design. And he said he really didn't like it and he didn't like how clients would treat him poorly. He said in a Q/A video fairly recently that a client once asked TJ and Scotty to setup their outlook alongside their website.

Once his youtube channel took off then he decided his web design days were over. But he still wanted to run some big business on the side. TJ has fairly lofty ambitions for a neckbeard but he doesn't actually do any work to commit to them. A good example was his first side project, Free Speech Vids.

TJ noticed on Youtube that the Digital Millennium Copywrite act was running rampant on Youtube and that Youtube would frequently turn monetization off for videos for arbitrary things like swearing. So he setup a site called FreeSpeechVids. He raised donations for this but the site went down less than a year later. TJ's partner Fake Sagan said on the project that TJ barely spent any money and kept all of it after the site went down. TJ said about it that it was a fairly naive goal because they didn't have the money to host videos themselves and if they linked videos from Blip.tv or Youtube they'd still be beholden to their rules.

Years later TJ made a personal website for himself called "That fat atheist" which had a web forum on it. What's notable is that it was run by one of TJ's friends who later was unreliable and took the site over. This caused TJ to distrust anyone who would run a website with him and eventually the domain expired on Thatfatatheist.com.

A few years later TJ got onto That Guy with the Glasses and made film reviews. His most notable ones being his reviews of the Star Wars prequels. However he gradually lost interest in posting videos to TGWTG because they wouldn't feature his videos. Instead choosing to feature the site's big draws like Doug Walker and the Nostalgia chick over him. (This was actually one of the reasons Spoony left years later). So he eventually lost interest claiming that it was just "The doug walker show" and decided he could make his own site and do it better. And that would be Not Productive.

He raised something like 17 grand for the site. A youtube user named StraightDope made an excellent video at the time about how TJ was unreliable due to Free speech vids. Ontop of this he thought he was approaching running a business like a child. Because when people make actual businesses they invest, they don't take donations. Because an investment isn't a donation, it means you actually commit to your idea and suffer actual real punishments if you don't deliver. He saw TJ not committing to getting actual investors on the site as akin to TJ not caring at all about it.

TJ was furious at this video and made a response video to it he took down about a day later.

This video is notable because TJ doesn't actually address a lot of StraightDope's arguments. He just goes "well we're gonna make the site better". And basically just shills the site.

After a few months the beta version of Not Productive launched and it was a disaster. Straight Dope made a second video on it.

There were clear huge problems with the site that should've been long ironed out. Things like how the layout of the site was a complete disaster. Eventually the site never actually came out and instead became a Youtube channel.

TJ blamed almost everyone other than himself for why Not Productive never came about. He said he spent money on unreliable site designers and a ton of stupid crap like that. He even admitted in a Q/A that after Not Productive he stopped wanting to run businesses and instead decided to focus his attention on the Drunken Peasants podcast. But the basic gist of it is, Straight Dope was completely right. TJ can't run a business. He can barely run a podcast considering Ben does all the work and all TJ does is show up. YourMovieSucks.org stated about Not Productive after the fact that the site was a complete disaster behind the scenes and jumped ship fairly early on. TJ said about him later that he was too "impatient" and that if he stayed with the site it could've really taken off.

TJ has something like 800 000 subscribers on youtube. He has a very large following. The Drunken Peasants also surpassed 100 000.

I actually think you are overselling TJ's abilities here. TJ did not design FSV. It was one of his drones named Matt Brett, who used WordPress and ning.com to do it.
ThatFatAtheist was a tumblr blog, with a zeta forum attached to it.

I think the biggest flaw with TJ when running these sites was his inability to manage and his general apathy towards working on things for long periods of time. As well as his entitled outlook on life.
