I’ve not played any of the Dragon Quest games. Considering that I only have a Switch and the graphics for the 1-3 ports look awful, would XI be a good entry into the series?
DQ11 was good. A return to form after 9 was a bit of a misfire IMHO (and 10 never left Japan). If you want to try one of the earlier games I recommend tracking down a translated rom of the SNES remake of DQ3. It's modernized from the NES original, good graphics for the era without that cheap mobile game look, and it's a more direct translation that doesn't include the modern DQ localization of shoving puns and/or alliteration into every literally every bit of text. I'm not even exaggerating, if you are pun averse avoid any DQ game made after 2007 like the plague.

Oh my God I just realized DQ localization has been garbage for over a decade.

As an alternative to the fan translation of the SNES remake, there is the official translation of the Gameboy Color remake, which while not as pretty looking or sounding as the SNES version, was very technically impressive for the hardware it was on and has extra content that no other version has, on top of having all of the stuff the SNES version added in, including the animated enemy sprites,

Keep in mind that I’m taking the words of some podcasters at face value, but aren’t these pun laden translations closer to the intent of the original language?

I do not speak Japanese myself so I cannot directly say, but this has been a bug up my ass for long enough that I have spoken with people who say they do. I've been told that while the series has always had its light hearted elements it also has its serious elements which are generally played straight, and that the pun factor has been ramped up to 11. There's a dialect thing too where in the Japanese apparently different towns will have different Japanese dialects, which was again ramped to 11 by having every character have to use heavy handed regional patois in every line every time. Basically it's like they had a decent reason to spice up the script and they shoved so much spice that it makes me choke.

They're not quite as obnoxious in DQ11 but a lot of this 'style' is still present and I want to kill it with fire.
 
Well if Dragon Quest 3 HD does well, it looks like Bravely Default and Octopath will die as series since it seems like the teams will then do DQ 1&2(since they're short games) and then 4,5, and 6 as separate releases.

It's more a case of "let's add something funny and more flavored in our english translation because we find the original script too 'dry' for a kid-looking game". Such as the mermaids speaking in rhyme in the english version of the game while all of them were speaking normally in the japanese version. Or the kids speaking in a weird english format at first but then reported to speak normally on later acts because the localizers actually got tired to write haikus and trying to write it off as slip ups on the character's parts. Let's not get started on all the foreign french/spanish/italian words added for "extra flavor" too.

To say nothing about all the pointless name changes and rewriting dialogue for no reason, sometimes which change characters drastically. For instance, Sylvia's father is clearly a blunt but cultured man in japanese, but changes in the english "translation" made him much more into someone who only cares about fighting.

Dragon Quest is the most infamous example of a japanese vidya franchise screwed by localization, although plenty of other japanese games and specifically JRPGs get a similar treatement (Legend of Heroes, PS1 Fantasy Fantasy titles, etc). It's a known fact that the best way to experience most things is in their original form, even if it requires learning a foreign language for that

Except there has never been a game that got screwed over and failed due to the quality of the localization. A game has only done poorly if the mechanics were shit or if there were distribution problems. Games like Stalker had an awful translation but grew a fanbase due to the gameplay. Metro was a similar situation.

The story in the game only exists due to the gameplay and is built around it, it's not the other way around. You're also acting under the assumption that it's only english, these games are translated into many other languages the world over. Translations have always had wiggle room because the companies making these games have always had the intention of selling them in multiple markets.

I like the accents and puns, but IV's Scottish accents were ridiculous and the gutting of the party chat is unforgivable.

I can see this going over well because it doesn't seem like theyre saying anything about making a 'more modern battle system'. Theres also the various stages of FF changes and another example of Bravely Default and all of them feel kind of awkward.

personally I hope they do something like FFX which gave you a preview of battle turns and let you interchange characters/plan for double turns.
 
What's up with FF 10?
It is a terrible teenage melodrama story smashed into a linear scenario with equally linear gameplay progression thanks to the awful sphere grid and somehow SOMEHOW they managed to top the awfulness of Triple Triad with Blitzball.

FF10 is when Square finally gave up any pretense of making JRPGs and went full throttle into the cinematics business (with game bolted on). Bad bad bad game.

Lulu can shake her money makers though. She's alright.
 
DQ V is the best, IMO, even though it has the fucking gayest name ever chosen for a video game "Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride".

3, 4, 6, 8 are great. 7, & 11 are good. 1 & 2 are just too old school for me to enjoy, but I have yet to play the Switch releases.

I liked 11 because it was such a mind fuck:

You try to save the world, only to find out you were helping the bad guy all along, who promptly uses your efforts to fuck the entire world like no tomorrow. You eventually stop him, but genocide has already happened, so, LOL. You then go back in time, leaving all your friends in this world you have genocided, to try and stop the genocide, but it won't actually help the friends you left behind, because that branch of reality has already happened (nice nod to the multiverse theory). So, you manage to stop the 'big bad' from raping the world, but in the process you enable the 'bigger bad', which you find out was left behind for you to deal with in the present by a bunch of ancient fuck-ups who couldn't get the job done, to come back and rape the world his way. Eventually, you are able to destroy the bigger bad. Subsequently, you help the bitch from the previous group of ancient fuck-ups that tried to save the world and only partially succeeded and left the 'bigger bad' behind so it was your problem in the present, to go back to in time and get a chance to stop the ancient group of fuck-ups from fucking up in the first place. However, her going back, just like you did, won't help you at all, because multiverse again. Given how things have gone thus far, I wouldn't bet that it went all that well for ancient fuck-up bitch since everyone in this game appears to be a hardcore fuck-up retard.

TL;DR - You end up fucking the entire world with genocide, you eventually stop the fucking from continuing, but LOL, genocide can't be undone. You abandon your friends in genocide world to go back and try to stop said genocide, even though it won't actually help them since LOL multiverse. You stop genocide, only to allow an even bigger bad guy to fuck the world instead. You eventually stop the bigger bad and unfuck the world, which wouldn't have been fucked if you had just fucking stayed home and never done anything. You are an abject failure of a hero and should have committed sudoku at the beginning of the game and everyone would have been better off, but no one would pay $60 to spend 5 minutes to become the an hero
