I stand corrected. It was closer to nine hours left. Unfortunately, a huge chunk of that was grinding metal slimes and gold golems because the bosses after the green dragon are all beef gates.
Part two, as expected, is much longer. About 24-25 hours for the main story, and there's some post-game content that I haven't gotten to yet.

All-in-all, I'm a big fan of these remakes. Great way to experience the first two games if you haven't played them, or to re-experience them if you have.

It also makes me kind of hope that we get a game set in the future of the overworld/Erdrea. We've seen the future of the underworld/Alefgard, so now I'm curious.

Well, I finished the post-game content. I guess I got my wish, kinda. I would have preferred an actual full game, but I guess that would be hoping for a bit much. I also wish I had bought this back when it came out.

Any opinions on the best Dragon Quest to start with between 1/2/3? And on which version to play? I can go with the HD remakes if they’re significantly better but I won’t turn down one of the originals either.

The new ones were released in 3/1/2 and that's a fine order to play the HD remakes in. And yes the HD remakes are good to start at.

If you're doing the original NES ones on an emulator then yeah just dive into 1 / 2 / 3 and watch the genesis of a genre. Just expect to need a guide for some of it.

@Two Dollars I would agree with this. You will be playing very old JRPGs, so know what to expect.

4/5/6 are much more modern (and way better... well except maybe 4), so don't give up if the first three leave you disappointed.

DQ5 is one of the best video games ever made. And the series never falters after. And it never once turns into Japanese high school like Final Fantasy did.

DQ 4 was kind of ass on the DS, in my experience. But that was mainly because you couldn't really talk to your party members like you could in 5. And everything else is basically your usual Dragon Quest experience, but 4 stands out that you have an lot of leeway where you can go in the final chapter as opposed to just 5 constantly holding your hand.

I really liked 4, but I've only played the NES version and was approaching it as such. It's my favorite of all the NES Dragon Quest games.

For what it is worth, 4 is still really good. Just not as good as the others, in my opinion. I didn't love the structure of the game's scenario and all the hopping back and forth.

Every game should be Dragon Quest 7.

11 really impressed me. I didn't think anyone could make games like that anymore.

Well, there's nothing inherently wrong with it on the DS. It just felt a little bit on the lifeless side when I compared it to 5. But the DS version actually added an bonus dungeon to address some of the plot-related bullshit

You could talk to your party members in the Japanese version.

They dummied out ALL of the party chat text in the localization.

This is also the localization that really brought the "ACH EYE HAZ TO SPEEAAKAH LIKKA MINOOORATEEY OR YEEH MIY NONNAH RECKOZNISE IMMA DIVERSE!" shit to 11, too, which they have refused to give up on ever since.

Here's a patch to restore the Party chat. Aka 75% of the game's script.

I've played the DS verison so many times through I filled every save slot more than twice, and I never once cared about party chat. It was bolted on for the PS1 version which intended to copy what DQ7 had, which after I came to my senses I only ever went into accidentally. It's fluff.

I'm more annoyed about the DS version changing all the crosses in the game to to demon tridents and references to God to Goddess. I wish the PS1 version would get a fan translation.

It's just Japs being retarded, unfortunately.

and references to God to Goddess.
Speaking of which, is this actually relevant to the universe? Because in the 4 games that I've seen, (s)he just exists as an excuse for the churches to exists and is tangentially related to the odd landmark or plot event

In DQ7 yes, very. And it needs to be God in that one.

DQ6 has references to rubiss which were retconned into a goddess because it's unrelated to the original rubiss.

Thing is the games are rooted in medieval European history and myth, so God and churches are very much a part of that. I'm still convinced you save at a church because "jesus saves."
