These games aren't that great, tbh. I played 1-3 on mobile and they were okay games to pass the time. I recently got the HD remake of 3 and although it is pretty, it's not that great and I definitely won't be playing 3 ever again.

That said, I'm pretty sure I won't be getting the upcoming HD remake of 1 & 2, even though 1 & 2 are probably more fun for me than 3.

I love the Monster games. The first one on the GBC is great and has an amazing soundtrack. The Cobi and Tara games aren't bad either. I've been playing The Dark Prince for the Switch and it's cute, but not really my fave. I don't like the pink haired female character as she seems kind of retarded.

They're amazing for the time they came out and still hold up today. Remember DQ3 came out like a few months after FF1 on the NES. For the time they were revolutionary.

And yes Dragon Quest Monsters is my fav. Dark Prince wasn't that good and it must have flopped cause they usually do a expansion a few years later with a shitload more monsters and a second storyline and a bunch of online / roguelike shit. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 1/2/3 all had these "professional" versions. No Dark Prince Pro update announced (maybe Switch 2?) -- I hear you can't even breed the last boss + last 2-3 bosses of Dark Prince, and the online is... iffy and already solved, basically.

They get significantly better after the first three. Those games are pretty old, I wouldn't suggest someone try them as their first Dragon Quest games.

4, 5 and 6 are much improved. Dragon Quest 5 is fucking incredible.

Mine too. The original was super fun and addictive, I hope it comes to NSO or Square remasters it (I think there was already a remake for PS1, maybe use that as a baseline).
It got remade for the DS or 3DS, forget which. It was VERY good. And fans translated it fully. It retains the roguelike setup and has a rather extensive postgame.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/translation-dragon-quest-monsters-terrys-wonderland-3d.431204/

They also fully translated the remake of DQM2. And much like DQM1 they kept the roguelike mode and there's a fuckhuge new postgame.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/dragon-quest-monsters-2-cobi-and-taras-marvelous-mysterious-key.586072/

And I think DQMJ3/DQMJ3Pro got mostly translated. (IIRC, there was some stupid drama about Pro, they finished Joker 3, were working on Pro, were taking too long, so someone just used AI to make a gibberish-ish translation and the translation team ragequit.)

All are available on hshop, although the DQM2 version on hshop is a few patches out of date. Alternatively, google's AI will literally send you straight to download links for all of them. (kek)

One downside is with the eshop shutdown I think some of these have pseudo-live service features (daily downloadable keys and the like) that you will have to work around.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=z13aCVkZaawThis was on the recent Nintendo Direct. Holy shit am I excited. Dragon Quest 7 is really fun. Hopefully they don't change too much and hopefully they add even more to do.
I heard the plan is to streamline it a bit more. I think the 3DS version is 80 hours, whereas the original was ~100-120 hours?

I'm hoping the changes they made to the 3DS version's job system are undone.

That is somewhat concerning. The 3DS version was very good but it was a bit shorter... though upon replay I think I like most of what the 3DS version did. Except possibly for the tweaks to the job system that you mention. It was fine in the 3DS version but I do like being able to put the time in to learn everything for everyone.

I'm still expecting a 80-100 hour game. No less than 80.

Kinda glad they're giving 7 a modern revision even if it looks like they're using XI's engine but hey if it's $60 I'd say it's worth it for the games length. III 2D-HD was good but lets face it it's a NES game it's only so long.

I didn't play the 3DS version, what's the main differences?

There is a article detailing more about the game

I didn’t either and the only experience I got with the game was watching my wife play it on the PS3 we had when I bought her a PS1 copy from eBay when it was still reasonably priced on eBay.

The visual style of the remake is great.

Me too. I’ve like the visual style Square has picked on this one. Going to be a good one.

You guys can literally see the differences between versions last page. Long story short: intro was shortened and made faster because it took 3 fucking hours to fight something in the PSX version and you had to explore every corner of every map just to try to unlock a new one, but it came with the tradeoff that you couldn't use abilities you learned if you changed out of the classes that had them for some stupid reason.

EXP distributions were also tweaked and it was easier to max out your jobs.

The game has a ton of content so I can take or leave the EXP changes. But the original version is probably better.

They added a really stupid "helpful fairy" (who looked like a Toriyama joke character, think it was mocking Dragon Quest of the Stars) who would help you figure out where to go. No more missing a random map piece in a pot behind a wall and spending 20+ hours trying to fucking find it, or having to try and remember which room in which color hallway and which pedestal in that room had the portal to the island you wanted to go to to do shit in.

They also fucked up the Class system. In the PSX version you could master everything by class switching if you wanted to grind. In the 3DS version advanced classes (so, most of them) only allow you to use their skills while you're that class. So in the PSX version, you could switch to Sage to learn advanced magic then switch to something else, a-la every other DQ game. In the 3DS version, if you switched away from Sage you lost the Sage spells until you switched back. Monster classes weren't affected so they become more important.

They also added some monster dungeon/map thing vaguely similar to DQ9's grottos based on streetpass and the monster catching / town building mechanic. Those dungeons always gave class XP so you could grind classes in them, whereas in the normal game until the last half of the game class XP capped out when you overleveled an area.

So is there any woke shit going on with the remake of DQ7?

Can't have a [checks notes] Professional Dancer from a tribe of tribal gypsies dress like a dancer, that would be inappropriate. Better to have her dress like a proper gymthot whore from a US Onlyfans site, that's empowering.

But other than that it's entirely too early to know. The game has a bit where a female character leaves your party because her parents think it's inappropriate for a young girl to be adventuring. That will probably be changed to be a bunch of girl power bullshit.

Fairy thing sounds good, I probably would've beat the game had it been in the original. Class system doesn't sound like a bad change, I guess it might make the game more challenging though. Seems like the Street Pass thing is largely irrelevant now.

It's all so tiresome...

I found this "REPLACES SOME SUBPLOTS WITH NEW SCENARIOS". I suspect the worst with these new replaced subplots.
