I stopped giving a shit after the Buu Saga. I knew I deserved better and soon I became a man of culture

But seriously, I never got to watch DBZ growing up since I didn't have cable, and only ever caught it a few times at friends'/relatives' house. Is anything Dragonball related actually watchable if you're an adult who's never seen much of it? DBZ seems bloated as all hell, but I did like watching all of Fist of the North Star and especially Yugioh 5Ds (okay, that's partially nostalgia even if they didn't play children's card games on motorcycles when I was a kid) as an adult as stupid, brain-cell killing, and ridiculous as those shows could get.

There is a lot worth watching but you probably missed the boat tbh

I'm one of the few fans of GT. The first arc was cool, after that the show was garbo. But it at least it could hang with Super because that show had up and down moments like a motherfucker!

As for DBZ, I believe that you had to have grown up with it in order to truly appreciate how awesome that show was and how it shaped anime today.

Shin Mazinger is god-tier. It has a slow start but explodes to being utter perfection. I love how it leads into Shin Great Mazinger (which totally should exist) since you know exactly what will happen next. I wish they'd do Getter Robo like that.

Some friends loaned me the first few volumes of the Dragonball manga and it was a fun read, even though at times I was disappointed the result of the crazy shit was mostly comedy which tended to involve Goku being naked. I guess I am too late for it though.

Speaking of old shounen shit, I did like the Saint Seiya anime in high school (watched the first two arcs) even though that was a decade ago and the English subtitles were so ass I felt more comfortable reading the French subtitles with my high school French knowledge (why I didn't watch the rest). But garbage subtitles were nothing new since I watched lots of great anime like some of the old Gundams (Victory, X, Turn A) or other mecha shit like some of the Getter Robo OVAs back when they had shit subtitles. Hell, even a few years ago an entire arc of Yugioh 5Ds had utter shit subtitles which I remember raging about while watching, but I sucked it up and dealt with it.

I love that it's not the power of the people that give mazinger strength, mazinger just needs his trusty fists to beat the shit out of Dr.Hell and the Mycenae empire.
Kouji is a good boy who fears neither god nor demon. And I agree with you on the Getter robo especially given that Armageddon was such a epic series and needed a good lead on from the original.

Idk I grew up with dragonball as it transitioned to Z (which was terribly done) and still couldn't get over the fact Goku was just some autistic man with reeree strength and somehow was able to support his family (although milf-chan chichi more than likely did most of the work also royalty so there's that.)

wow what the fuck this thread went from "occasionally breathing" to "mass autism powered panic attack" literally over night.

Neat.

I throw a lot of shade at GT because a ton of the creative ideas from the first few parts of the show went down the crapper the second fights picked back up again. And I might have even excused it, but once Baby showed up action in GT was just energy blasts over and over again. I will say I appreciate the art direction more than Super since it does feel like an evolution of OG Dragon Ball, but that only accounts for so much and Super wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel in the same way as GT anyways.

Nuova Shenron and Ledgic can stay though. Genuinely fun characters right there.

GT had great ideas. I loved the character development of the first few parts. Ledgic was a cool character, it’s a shame we didn’t see more of him. But my favorite fight was SSJ4 Goku vs Oozaru Vegeta. That fight was epic and none of the other fights really gave me the feeling of excitement like that one did.

That’s because it got merged with a thread that started with that long “lol Draginball is dumb” post.

I think OG Dragon Ball is still pretty fun with its outlandish humor if you're into easily digestible adventure flicks. The pacing's still pretty good compared to Z, though you can always turn to the manga and appreciate Toriyama's excellent panel composition skills, where the actions always lead seamlessly from one panel to the next, making it a real page turner. Watching Goku become progressively stronger through hard work without (for the most part) relying on gimmicks such as transformation can be pretty satisfying too. If you enjoy DB and find it interesting as it progressively becomes more serious, there's a good chance it will serve as a better gateway to Z. There's tons of shows that have improved upon what DBZ was doing, but the early series just might be different enough to hook you in.

The two DBZ TV Specials are pretty good too, especially that of Bardock, as it gives you a very different protagonist by DB standards, though I'm not sure how much you'd like it without the context of watching the series up to the Frieza arc. It'd also recommend the DBS Broly movie if you are okay with not knowing the back story and just want some jaw dropping shounen anime spectacle.

It sucks with Toriyamas memory though (Forgetting the character Launch, and i believe both Oolong and Puar's transformation schtick, but mopstly, the fact that Piccolo can turn into a giant! Always pissed me off that he forgot about it (It's in the manga, so it's canon) since i really would like to see giant Piccolo Vs. Oozaru :heart-full:

Gotta say, I am really liking where the Manga of DBS is going right now. I think they are waiting for that to get filled out more before animating it for the anime version of DBS. The new villain, Moro, is pretty badass and not the usual type of villain they face and regular tactics of SSB beatdown won't work.

One thing I am wondering is if the 6 destroyed universes from BEFORE the ToP got revived with 17's wish? And honestly, I think Whis and the Angel's(if not Whis, some of them) aren't trustworthy at all and have some sinister ulterior motives.

Noice^ I always thought the opening for Final Bout was badass

Fun fact about Final Bout is it's weird English dub was made by an uncredited Animaze, or at least their talent.

Gohan's casting is a bit funny as Lex Lang would later voice Goku in that odd South Asian dub of DB Super.
