this has some reach, my fucking dad texted me this morning and said 'r u okay the dragon ball z guy died' lol i think without hyperbole we lost who was the most influential living comic book creator. i don't know that anyone who was still alive in that sphere after stan lee died had as much of a real impact on pop culture in the world. you see references to DB in almost everything, and regardless of the fact toriyama considered it a hodgepodge of shit he saw on tv turned into a kid's comic, it really did change the world in one way or another.

fuck, he came out the gate swinging for the fences with Dr Slump which influenced every comedy made in Japan since, and laid the groundwork for merchandising off of comics there in a way nobody but Tezuka did before, then once he got to Dragon Ball his journey to the west/shaw brothers kung fu/superman II combination became THE seminal work for a generation of people, then once it hit America 15 years later, did it again. let alone it's influence in India & South America.

we will see his influence continue in animation and video games, and in other media too, (creed 3's final fight had a huge dragon ball reference) until the end of time. godspeed you horny old bastard. thanks for the adventures & the slimes.

If I get a scouter for this, that's fair, at least it'll fit with the theme.

I used to run like Goku when I was a little kid. Yeah, everybody calls it the Naruto Run now, but Goku was doing that way before, and I thought that shit was the coolest. I immediately got teased out of doing it, but I get every feeling in that commercial.

I'm gonna miss Toriyama.
 
A lot of people think of the anime adaption of Dragon Ball Z and the action when they think of Toriyama, but for me it's always been his actual works with his manga from his series to standalone comics. He was the king of gag humor and always got a smile out of me with how he setup a punchline.
The worst part is that he wasn't completely retired and had his hands into many projects. A chunk of the industry is going to missing something tremendous without him from here on out.

I already posted something here, but I kept thinking about it more and more and even got a bit teary-eyed. Not the biggest fan of DB but there is no denying that it was a huge part of my childhood, I watched Super when it came out and whilst visiting Japan went to the cinema to see the Broly movie. And I still have the manga volumes sitting here. Toriyama and his work were probably one of the most important events in entertainment media that happened in the last century, with its influence rippling throughout the decades.

The reason Dragon Ball was so impactful to untold numbers of young boys was because of what it was about. Goku, born the lowest of the low, through sheer determination, training, and his friends became the most powerful warrior in the universe. He never gave up, he was always seeking to improve himself and rise above where he came from. He never recognized limits, he just kept training. No matter who you are, Goku was inspirational.

Even Z was very upbeat to the point of being tone-deaf. Remember when Piccolo tried to buy time for Goten and Trunks to train by telling Buu to go kill some more people, then Buu did a quick walk around Kami's Lookout before unleashing a mass of energy blasts to kill everyone on Earth individually? He didn't rain down random energy blasts. He locked onto every poor son of a bitch on the planet and fired a specific energy blast with their name on it. Depending on the translation he called it "Human Extinction Attack" or "Genocide Blast." HEA2.png
Then he got into a 3-stooges slapfight with Gotenks where Piccolo plays the straight man comically mugging at how little Gotenks is taking this seriously, because Toriyama always comes back to gags.

Just made an account to say Dragon Ball meant so much to me growing up, everyone I know IRL knows who Goku is.

Akira Toriyama will always live on in his work & pop-culture.

On another note I hope people don't get too harsh on Toyotarou if he ends up taking a hiatus, Toriyama is his idol/master/friend. Why wouldn't he take a break?

I know some people hated super. But super will have a special place in my heart considering toriyama didn't have to go out of retirement. But he did so people who didn't grow up when dragon ball was in syndication/print & only catch kai/gt/video games get to experience having a dragon ball anime/Manga & didn't have their last dragon ball experience being some shitty live action. Thank you, for making a property that all people regardless of ethnic backgrounds can enjoy.
