An article like that likely would have killed the show back in the 1980s. This chick probably thought her shitty article would blow up like that. Thankfully, 1999 was kind of a based oasis of time between the Moral Majority era and the Woke era.
 
The movies, shows, books, music, comics, video games, etc. that were made during the 80s, 90s and 2000s were shat upon by the lynch mob. Remember, musicians such as Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Pantera, Anal Cunt, GG Allin, N.W.A, 2 Live Crew, Geto Boys, Insane Clown Posse, Eminem, etc. were blamed upon for being "bad influence" to children.

Yeah the most I remember them doing is editing out the blood or making it a vague brown. I'm sure there was more, but it was still pretty graphic compared to other stuff at the time.

I suspect "Anal Cunt" may indeed be a bad influence.
 
I don't really remember any of the real egregious censorship back in the day. HFIL & lack of blood is about all I can actually remember. I was lucky though because my mom bought one of the uncut videos for me like once a month as they came out. I didn't have all of them but I had a lot of them. My recollection of DB on TV is probably colored by that because I was buying those even through when they were releasing tapes of original dragon ball & gt and I never had any edited ones. I do remember always thinking the uncut ones must be censored too because from a flea market I had a couple of the movies that were like mid 90s animelab fan subs and vegeta called people candy ass faggots and shit like that so I figured there must somewhere out there be a true uncut version where the dub actors said lines like that because I had never seen a subtitled cartoon before.

I've always thought that if I somehow magically was a Hollywood guy and was the director of live action dragon ball movies by the time we got to adapting Z I'd go all the fuck out with the home video release and have a special edition that the blu ray looks like the old funimation boxes and says original uncut movie or something on it and my directors cut would have an optional audio track of like disturbed and deftones and music like that over fights like their old versions of the movies and I'd have a "fan sub" subtitle track where vegeta's calling people homophobic slurs and other hilarious emblishments that those tapes had. I'd maybe have the actors ADR different dialogue for the alternate audio track of inaccurate and randomly vulgar dialogue to match it lmao

I imagine being constantly one-upped by an idiot savant is humbling though. Either way, the odds of him dying due to being within proximity of Goku OR Frieza is high. So I guess the guy who genuinely seems to like him is an improvement.
