Out of curiosity, I had to do a compare-contrast for domestic opening weekend numbers between Mewtwo Strikes Back and Super Hero.

For reference, this was Demon Slayer's opening weekend:

Ooh, so close there, Super Hero. Almost beat out Demon Slayer there for opening weekend, and it's in more theaters than Demon Slayer was.

This was Broly's theater count btw:

I watched the movie on release but mever posted about it here, I'll be honest, I didnt like it much, it felt to me like too much of it was just nostalgia pandering with no substance, literally showing re animated clips from what they are referencing, the battle between goku and vegita is completely useless and only serves to waste movie time for like 10 minutes, and both gohan blanco and orange picollo look really bad imo.
Its not all bad tho, I like most of the scenes with Pan, I think the first half of the movie is pretty good and alñ the scenes with Picollo sneaking into the base were great, the animation is good, tho it has some flaws, and I really like the gamma bros.
Overall its just meh, much better than Resurrection F, but I still like Broly more, and BoG is still the best one to come form post 2010 DB
Also, Dr. Gero wife's design in the movie is Android 21s, so thats nice

Out of all the times I procrastinate posting my own review, it's gotta be when the Farms is down. At least I have my thoughts saved in my notes!

Anyway, Super Hero! Watched the sub in my local theater, pirated the dub (duh). An overall 8/10, especially if you're a Piccolo or Gohan fan! 🤩
  • The biggest issues were the pacing and waaaay too much RR backstory. As much as I appreciate the little nod in the intro, I don't know why they told us what we already know. Also, how in the hell did none of the characters notice RR was literally the pharmaceutical company? Did they somehow obtain the Idiot Ball while gathering the dragon balls?
  • The worst offender was NO GREAT SAIYAMAN in a movie about SUPER HEROES! C'mon Toei, you missed a MASSIVE opportunity that would've won more fans over and made it a straight 10! Hell, have him pass the torch along to Pan and give her a little costume too!
  • The comedy was on point in both versions and it felt GREAT to have Piccolo and Gohan take the spotlight in a long, dry drought! I definitely agree that it should've just been a Piccolo movie and then give Gohan his own OVA, though there wouldn't be any reason to not include Gohan as a minor character given their relationship. My favorite parts were the Gammas' sound effect projectors, Piccolo mentioning how he "never got his license" from the driving school episode, and Gohan casually flicking the gun out of the baddies' hands while politely telling them to fuck off.
  • Pan was fucking adorable, no complaints about her! Though you would have thought she'd advance in her training since we've seen her fly as a baby in Super. And even if Videl only got 3 minutes of screentime, I was very happy to see her again and play a somewhat active background role continuing the family business! Would've been nice to see part of her gi in the phone call to confirm it, but I'll take what I can get.
  • I actually liked the Gammas from when they were first promoted, and they stole the second act! Best fight in the movie was them vs. Gohan and Piccolo.
  • The cel-shaded CG actually looks good; much like FighterZ, they move and are posed exactly as if it were still 2D. The 3D backgrounds, not so much as they look like PS1 cutscenes. Certain characters looked janky every once in a while, but then again some properties need to get used to the CG transition and they were pretty much blink-and-you-miss-it. I do like how the CG took advantage of the fighting choreography, however.
  • I'm not sold on Orange Piccolo and Beast Gohan's transformation designs as the latter looks way too goofy even for an over-the-top shounen; it would be better if it was a combo of Ultimate, SSJ3, and SSJ4. Dare I say SSJ5?
  • Kaiju Cell Max was an interesting idea with subpar execution from the backstory hogging up the running time but Android 18's trauma from her absorption was a nice touch. Could have had LITERALLY any other alien/monster that wouldn't change the story; hell, as fake as that Raditz leak was, they could've even done something with cloning/rebuilding him, but nostalgia gets asses in seats. We got off lucky knowing that Toei didn't make him speak.
  • Piccolo holding off Cell Max while Gohan charged the Makankosappo (and succeeded without sacrificing himself) was a nice role-reversal that's totally not gonna be weaponized with the neverending "hurr durr Piccolo iz hiz reel dad!" debacle. Beast Gohan was completely unnecessary for that move alone; Gohan may be lazy, but he’s no weakling and would fight for his family regardless of staged or not kidnappings to get him off of his ass. Furthermore, by End of Z there's no reason to believe he isn't balancing his training and his academic work.
  • I like to think that all of the ass-service throughout was Toei making up for that one undershot of Bulma's boobs for the entirety of Super. Everybody and their grandma knows the cap where her ass is perked out, but honey, that was just the beginning. Bulma's very first scene is her laying on a couch in the "French Girls" pose, and the camera totally eats up her next scene where she's shaking her ass and looking under the kitchen sink for the Whis communicator. The director is also an equal-opportunity ass man because Goten and Trunks become Fat Gotenks and he spends most of his screentime mooning the audience. Is this part of my review really necessary? Nah. Would you ask for something like this anyway? Oh, why not?
  • For the post-credits scene, I love that they trolled the audience by not actually showing Vegeta's win over Goku.
What were your favorite scenes? How did your theaters and friends react to the climax?

Is there a particular reason why people are buzzing about a second multiverse tournament all of a sudden?
I think Zeno said he wants to hold another one or something like that, but it's been a while since I've watched it. Another tournament would be fine but not so soon, and they need a twist so it's not just Tournament of Power 2.

I for some reason didn't know we had a thread for talking about Dragon Ball.

Good to see that we do lol.

Edit: Oh yeah, GT > Super.

Is this the right thread for discussion of ULTRA Vegito?

XTREME edgelording as one guy reads over his schoolbook scribbles in a British accent  This apparently gets millions of views and has like 100 chapters. My God.

I'm having absolutely no luck finding the 1995 dub of Dragon Ball, the one that got re-released in 2000. I was able to track down the 1996 Ocean dub of DBZ but this one is a bitch. Anyone have any ideas?
You mean the one where the same VA that did kid Goku was Gohan in DBZ?

Seems like it was on the Funimation site a while back? Idk it was on Hulu too but they seem to only have the sub version now.

Didn't know we had this thread. Well since I'm here...

As usual, the movies tend to be pretty damn enjoyable imo, Super Hero is no different. I really like how we finally get time with some of the main cast that has been criminally neglected and get some really cool new developments. I was getting really tired of "Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza" time.

Granted the new manga chapters make that an issue again, but actually having the balls to go forward with Frieza's fucking insane power building potential to the point of being close to, if not THE strongest character in the series is a nice twist I would of expected to see in a fan manga.

I personally think Dragonball is in a nice period of good content right now.

Idk if this is the place to discuss this since it's technically a vidya in the franchise but is anyone else actually kinda excited for the Bardock DLC and others for DBZ Kakarot?

Idk, Kakarot is far from being one of the "best" games I've played and yet I always come back to it for mindless fun when I just want to button mash. Im intrigued by the idea of playing as Bardock since I think it'll be more combat based as opposed to just being a series of energy blasts late game like the main story game.

Also if they end up saying fuck it and doing a ToP DLC I think that'd be pretty awesome, could just have a constantly rotating battle royale of bosses with some of the big fights from the anime as story fights, would be fun as hell.

This is just speculation on my part, but I think Toriyama's son Sasuke getting involved with handling the series gave him the encouragement to propose Piccolo being the star. The interviews give me the impression that father and son worked together on this project, and that strikes me with a powerfully anti-Miyazaki vibe that makes me feel confident that this chinese fairy tale run amok is in good hands. Having new blood involved in the series, that isn't a dedicated fan or coming from a corporate setting, is good for the series' health because it gives it a chance to break bad habits. I remember the days where posters and t-shirts would be nothing but blond guys with Piccolo in the background, and now we've lived long enough to see the super saiyan form being phased out altogether with the main saiyans all taking on personalized forms--it's entirely possible that Pan will skip it altogether and get something custom made.

As for Freeza, seeing him get his dignity back almost made sitting through those boring chapters worth it. The man only works when he's a legitimate menace and not a scheming saturday morning cartoon villain as he was in Broly's movie. He may not be the de facto strongest since Toriyama seems deadset on keeping the Beerus ceiling in place, but he's at least stronger than any of the good guys by a wide margin and that's how it should be. Black (and presumably red for his gems) might be a rather middle school color choice, but at least it will put an end to all those jokes about him turning super saiyan.

Addendum: as it turns out, some of the names you can get for the tamable Slime in DQV are Akira & Sasuke. Toriyama has stated that he shares Dragon Quest save files with his family; it might be a coincidence but that's a nice touch if it was intentional. https://wikiwiki.jp/dqdic3rd/【スラリン】

I think Frieza is stronger than Beerus by now. As for the heroes there's a chance Gohan is above them both, but who knows really.

It's just cool they're making these characters relevant again, I thought Piccolo was condemned to fodder battles forever. Now they just need to boost the humans somehow.
