Bloomberg just posted a Jason Schreier piece that explores why Veilguard flopped harder than Tiny Tim dropping dead on stage.


It's really not a very illuminating piece; anyone who followed the game's development over the last decade can probably guess the issues. The centerpiece is the decision to turn DA into a liveservice game, then back to single player, while only giving BioWare a year and a half to do it (a familiar story).

There's some talk about how shitty the writing was (apparently the snarky tone was even worse at one point), but nothing about the stultifying wokeness, the godawful characters, or putting zippertits and pooners in the character creator. Of course.

Also not mentioned: Schreier's long-deleted tweet about "Go woke, go ... to the top of the charts!" Asshole.
I read this whole thing because I find video game development trainwrecks fascinating. There really isn’t much new. It’s mostly just a glorified recap. And of course, zero mention of the backlash to all the wokery.

I think the only interesting/amusing part is how the Mass Effect team was brought in and even they knew it was dogshit.

Fucking Weekes. If Dragon Age was enough.

The idea of Weekes actually writing for a Mass Effect show is pretty horrifying, but for me the funny part is the sheer desperation of this tweet (or whatever you call it on Bluesky). "Guys? Guys? C'mon, lemme play with you, I promise not to fuck it up this time ... and I'm not doing anything else ... "

Even Jason, who admittedly does good journalism work, is ultimately fake. It's all fake. He does this deep dive like he did Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, but bowwed down to the presses when push came to shove. The entire press reception of this game was disingenuous.

We knew this story sooner that Jason did, but it's interesting that the development was actually shorter than we initially thought.

His articles used to be way better when he was at kotaku ironically enough. Long as fuck and extremely detailed (the Anthem one is still insane to read). Ever since he moved to bloomberg it seems like he became complacent and now his stuff is massively cut down and basically just long recaps with a few bits of new info sprinkled in here and there.
 
has there ever been a good game to show adaptation? at best it's normie slop that ignores the established lore like fallout or last of us
The Last of Us successfully emulated the games' achievement of totally alienating their audience with the second installment, though I don't know if I'd call that "good."
 
At this point the constant parroting of executive meddling falls as flat as a middle schooler blaming their online cringe on their little brother posting on their account while they weren't looking.

The same people that fawn over New Vegas, a game also made in a year and a half with a fraction of the dev team and resources claim that the live service pivot is why Veilguard sucked. Like sure, that'd explain bugs, bad gameplay, sloppy models, shitty optimization, and other tech related stuff but the biggest gripes seem to be with dialogue and story - both of which apparently had a decent amount of material to draw from over the years long work cycle. It's frustrating to see such a constant smokescreen being held up. Executive meddling can explain a lot of things but not the fact that the writing team hasn't actually seen two normal humans interact in real life.

Even his old friends are other places seem content to leave him high and dry.

He must be Ian and Anisa Johma levels of putrid to have even his fellow douches say NOPE.

It actually does remind me a bit of Anisa and I's 'charity' shield. Easier to beat up on EA than admit you need actual life experience to write well and can't just sit on Bluesky all day thinking about your gendies.

The one thing I've ever said that's a compliment about any games journalist is 'Jason Schrier does a good post-mortem'.

Of course, the backhand of that compliment is that he can't be relied on until after the dust has settled.
