"Doxing" in 2025

It means the same thing and doesn't have the potential to be end up like any of these other terms. It's very literal.

I like "documenting" and "docs-ing" the most so far. It doesn't sound like a euphemism, as things like "sunshining" do, and I agree that it's phonetically similar enough to be convenient (considering its the root of dox in the first place).

Also, it feels like malicious compliance, in a way. We may need to change a word, but we'll do it as little as possible.
 
I fired my last post from the hip but reading back a few pages it's implied there is a specific legal concern.

@Null do you have reason to be concerned that 'dox' will be a regulated term soon / at some point? It may explain No-Dong's use of 'unmasking' (other than it's gay) as working at Google you might as well be working for the feds and have connections. Plz explain blink twice for yes
 
I think the entire site should use a combination of the terms that were suggested until one of them or an unknown replacement rises to the surface naturally.

411 replacing the word "Dox" and phonebooking replacing the verb "Doxxing" is what I personally think would work best.

Alternatively: Gunt, Gunting, and Gunted. "Did you hear about that Rekieta paypig? He done got gunted. They found dragon inflation fart porn on his Xitter likes."

This might be a dumb question, and please don't bite my head off, but if certain words mean criminal intent, does that mean you really aren't free to tell someone in call of duty to kill themselves, while egging them on to do it eventually becomes a crime? Where is the actual line?
 
I think phonebooking would be the best. It's a callback to what's been done IRL for decades : looking up public information that's given out by local government nationwide. You weren't (and aren't) digging through someone's trash or breaking into their home to gather the information.

I can't think of what it's called, but it's a reference to something legal and there's no mental gymnastics that can be played to imply wrongdoing.
 
So all the phone "doxing" or whatever that happens in this site is people looking up publicly available info, right? What if we "ban" "doxing," but allow links to the sites that "dox?" Like, if you find someone's address on Facebook, you archive the Facebook page, take a screenshot, and post "Look, they got doxed by Facebook! Here's an archive and a screenshot!" I know some sites can't be archived, a link and a screenshot would be fine in those cases.

A bunch of benefits: no one can reveal any info that's actually private (which to my understanding is actually a legal problem), we get to keep using the term, the actual "doxing" whether it's legal or not is happening off site, less faildox, makes it hard to be against kiwi farms for doxing without also being against the data broker, etc.

It should happen organically. When people are allowed to try different terms out, eventually we'll figure out which one has the best ring to it when actually used. Evolution of language can't really be forced effectively. If you force people to use a specific term and they don't like the term, they'll go back to using doxing instead.

I kind of like "phonebooking" because it can be shortened to "booking" which evokes imagery of a suspect getting checked into jail.

Deanonymized is pretty good too. it accurately describes the action of linking someone's real life identity with an internet persona. It is too long though, as other people have pointed out. Deanaoned and deaned look and sound like shit though. Maybe xanon'd? This is hard.

Maybe it would be easier to come up with a catchy sounding acronym?

This is optics related, not worrying about being criminally prosecuted (outside of the UK anyways).

Exactly. The rest of the terms feel to LARPy to me.

And we don't have to preserve the hyphen in "docs-ing" I just wanted to be clear when establishing it. Docsing may look a little odd to the eye at first but you get used to it.
