The blade is very strong once you get incremental charge. They were probably really paranoid about the ballista’s balance due to the guass cannon being OP in 2016.

You're still a sitting duck waiting for that thing to charge.

Beat the game about two days ago - feels like they were trying to be a little too Dark Souls at some points, responded to criticisms about DOOM 2016 a little too much especially regarding ammo scarcity, and the parkour was actually for the most part fun but there were two VERY SPECIFIC points where they just dropped the ball with that.

1. I think halfway through the ARC Complex, when there's two poles followed by a ledge to the left that if you try to directly go there, you'll miss the ledge by a foot. The correct path is to go completely opposite where the game clearly is telling you to go and jump to a climb wall that's hidden from view until you've already left the second pole, where you wouldn't be looking at all normally.

2. That one section in the second to last level on the way to turning on the red portal ring. You all know the one I'm talking about and I had to look that shit up (the majority of comments on the video ALSO stated they were only there specifically because of how stupid this section is). I still don't know how I managed to get past it given it all comes down to timing the double jump and the two dashes at the exact second you have to or you'll fall short.

The ending was also shockingly unsatisfying, given you beat the final boss and it then just immediately ends. It's not really even a spoiler because legitimately nothing happens. I hope this gets rectified in one of the two upcoming DLC campaign extensions which I'll get since I got the Digital Deluxe with season pass.

Great game. Remove the fucking Marauders they just aren't fun to fight against.

Marauders are a great idea, they just needed more refinement. The shield 99.9% of the time thing is bullshit and you should be able to break it to stun the guy, instead of being forced into one specific rote pattern of waiting for the eye flash (and even then it feels like you aren't even hitting him half the time since he doesn't fall back if the damage threshold wasn't reached, which is not good player feedback). The wolf also simply needs to go, it doesn't work with him thematically and Marauder is also stupidly fast in movement AND attack speed, he doesn't need the ghost wolf to make a difficult fight EVEN HARDER.

That is in contrast to the Doom Hunter, who normally also is shielded - except you have TWO ways of dealing with it, by either A) Plasma Gunning it away temporarily and whaling into him, or B) skipping A) and going straight for the tank if you don't have plasma ammo or just don't care for some reason. Either way, the tank part blows up first and he loses the shield so it isn't an actual deterence, unlike Marauder who simply pops a shield at any given moment beyond the eye flash window.

I found the Doom Hunters more annoying than Marauders but I didn't realize until just now that you can destroy the tank without using the Plasma Gun.

I used to like Upper until I released he is a whiney prick. The dude also made comments leading me to believe that he is a socialist/marxist. He was rambling about "late stage capitalism and talking about voting in the Democrat primary in some videos. I unsubscribed after this. Glad to see I made the right choice since he can make garbage reviews then has the gall to bitch at his viewers when he gets called out.
I never liked him to begin with at all. His pretentious way of talking by using big words for the sake of using big words, his incredibly smug take on casual gamers (basically he uses mmos and destiny as his standard and says people who don’t want to invest disproportionate amounts of time to grind are casual), and how he shits on his fans any moment he can and he’ll block you if you criticize him despite the fact that he criticized devs and blizzard entertainment perpetuating censorship. I mean just think about this; if he’s so confident that he’s right about Doom Eternal and wants to strike against fanboys, why doesn’t he make a video addressing those fanboy comments or take them up on a live show to debate? Because at the end of the day this is just a job to him and if he were to make a complete jackass out of himself that would ruin subscriber confidence and he would lose revenue. He’s just here for money and it’s an easy source of income. So yeah, never liked him.

I'd still give this a 10/10 but I do have some minor gripes:

Where is the chaingun commando and Spider Mastermind? The Mastermind was in the last game sure but they could have brought it back. The commando was the only other missing enemy.

The platforming was a little obnoxious at times. Not a deal breaker but ultimately made me wonder why it was there in the first place.

The Unmakyr was underpowered. Very sad.

And it didn't have the one thing I wanted, even if it was done via cutscenes, I wanted to see a suburbia overrun by the demons. Instead, we got a futuristic world post-demon invasion. Which is still cool but I wanted to see the invasion as it happened and a Cyberdemon or Spider Mastermind stomping around the ruined homes. Maybe we'll get that in some future DLC?

The only complaint I’m having so far is the customization feels a little bit unnecessary(?) at times and I wish there were more cool things they did instead of gameplay mechanic improvements that only make the game easier. Otherwise the game is really challenging and I’ve died a couple times on arenas but I’ve surprisingly never gotten frustrated. I’m playing on ultra-violence and it hasn’t been way too hard.

The low-key ending didn't bother me. I like to think that from Doomguy's perspective, erasing entire realms out of existence and saving Earth from a universe-busting disaster is just another day for him - there's no true ending because Hell is always going to find another way to fuck shit up. He's been through enough games and backstory to know that.

Still, if we're talking about niggles with Eternal, one of my genuine complaints is that the ending credits is just photos of people from the dev team smiling at the camera; Doom 2016 had a bunch of panning shots that occasionally got creative (like having the Doomguy doll take on a Pinky). The post-credits scene salvaged some of the disappointment, but I still wanted to see more of that.

The Spider Mastermind was around in the form of the Arachnotrons. The lore quite literally states that salvaged organic matter of the Mastermind was used to make the little bastards. Sure, the actual boss isn't around, but DOOM 2016 was more a straight update to the original DOOM while Eternal is largely the same with DOOM II with more creative liberties taken.

And the chaingun commandos were probably left out because there's already a ton of enemies and one more wouldn't have made much of a difference or really even have been noticeable from the regular soldier since the game seemed to have a very fetishistic attachment to dropping in Arachnotrons in every battle more or less from the literal start of the game.

The Unmakyr was underpowered. Very sad.

This I will agree with. It's supposed to be stronger than even the BFG, but the BFG will kill anything in one shot, whereas the Unmakyr weirdly has trouble doing an equal amount of damage to heavies within the same time frame and ammo consumption. It looks great but it really doesn't have a role to fill that the BFG doesn't already do better.

Unfortunately, the game already takes place in the future given Mars has a power plant outpost already set up, meaning interplanetary space travel has been achieved and thus you were going to get the futuristic world anyway.

And to be honest, the demons of hell aren't really all that different from an alien invasion if you ignore the lore behind their existence and thus we've gotten "aliens invade suburbia" quite often.

Regarding Doomguy, the ending was fine...but there was a LOT more going on that simply was left open without being addressed. I mean, what exactly is Hayden's end game? He's sort of been the guide of the rebooted DOOM universe for Doomguy (especially given what becomes obvious from the lore regarding his relationship with Doomguy) but he clearly has an agenda of his own and he doesn't even get a remark about what to do now that the Icon is dead and the Khan Makyr is out of the picture, too?

I wholeheartedly agree, the DOOM 2016 credits were worth the price of admission alone for that game (Granted I bought it on sale about two months ago so I paid like, $10), but Eternal...you had ALL those new assets and the best you could do was that? Not even some funny shots of the Marauder flipping tables or something?

Id has said that single player DLC is coming for the game so in my opinion they are going to tie up lose ends in DLC's.

Yeah that's the main issue with marauder, it's really designed to force you to play a specific tactic.

It's RIP AND TEAR not DODGE OR DIE.

I literally tried everything against the dude, I even found a way to stunlock him, but you can't actually damage him while he's stunlocked UNLESS the green eyes prompt happened beforehand, and at that point they get iframes after a certain point so they can't be stunlocked at all.

It's obvious from a design standpoint they were trying really hard to force you to fight marauder a specific way. Which was obviously Sniper/Supershotgun/ballista punishing.

Like seriously, you can't even damage him if you detonate a rocket behind him, which is the point of the rocket mod in the first place.

Thats what I really like about the Marauder fights though. You actually have to think a little harder and have better positioning. Plus the tenseness during the fights with a Marauder is probably the best part.

Plus the that satisfying glory kill where he catches doom guys fist and he just pushes the blade out into his eye. Feels fucking great

I did think harder, like I said I used every weapon - every grenade spam to see what works or not.

What literally only works is two things, 1. waiting for him to 'turn green' and attacking with any weapon(which is retarded and takes a lot of time) or 2. waiting for him to 'turn green' and spastically weapon switching with the fast switch mod to bypass 'reload animations' between super shotgun and ballista (and i assume other heavy hitters like sniper and rocket launcher) and just smack him repeatedly in the face.

It's not 'tactical' in any sense of the word if the devs have to shut down every other tactic than those two.

Seriously, the one time rocket launchers would be any useful and they had to shut THAT down.

I really hope we get to play as Samuel. Getting to play as a ten foot tall robotic
angel
and bitchslap demons would be awesome.

not sure if this was posted before. but i wanted to reveal this.

it's possible to play the classic DOOM 1 and 2 on doom eternal. go to the old DOS computer in Doomguy's personal quarters.

to unlock DOOM 1, you need to collect all of the floppy discs from the campaign

and unlocking DOOM 2 requires a password. that password is FLYNNTAGGART.

i'm liking this game even more. we basically got 3 games from this one game. doom 1, doom 2, and doom 64.
Oh my god they actually referenced the Doom novels. And here I thought they forgotten all about it.

So are invasions not a thing yet either? I know they differentiated between empowered demons and invasions, but are neither available?

I think empowered demons might be a thing (I only say that because there is an option to turn them on and off), but I've never seen one. Invasions are coming in a patch I think.

Not surprised that its not in yet tho, the Battlemode's connection and overall online stability is a bit iffy right now.
