Does Undertale promote pacifism?

From the outside looking in this game seems to promote pacifism and treat self defense as a bad thing. But when I bring this up Undertale fans will argue until they're blue in the face that this is not true. So is my perspective right or am I retarded? Also this game and its fan base seem really gay.

There is more content (more varied) with the pacifist route, but they also clearly dedicated a good amount of time and events (the biggest fight in the game) to genocide runs, so it's debatable and probably without an accurate answer, unless you specifically ask the developer.

Both paths (genocide/pacifist) have their own appeal, and resolve as you'd expect.
