Does Brushing Teeth Break Your Fast?

In the name of Allah the Most Merciful and the Most Beneficial. May peace be upon the Holy Prophet peace be upon him.

As the holy month of Ramadan comes near people become more considerate about the guidelines for oral care during this divine time. Fasting means to refrain from food and water from dawn till sunset. There are detailed guidelines for fasting let’s delve into the intricacies of oral care during Ramadan.

A common question that usually arises during Ramadan is whether brushing is allowed during this month or not.

Does Toothpaste Break Fast?

Yes, brushing your teeth can break your fast.

According to scholars using toothpaste for brushing teeth is generally allowed during fasting, as long as toothpaste is not swallowed. However, the use of a Miswak, a traditional teeth-cleaning twig, is highly recommended and holds significant value in Islamic tradition, especially before prayers and upon waking in the morning.

Evidence

  • According to the Hanbali school, using toothpaste while fasting is forbidden; if any gets in the throat, the fast might be deemed invalid.
  • The Hanafi school of scholars advises against using a toothbrush and toothpaste during a fast, preferring to use a miswak. Nevertheless, the fast is still in effect if toothpaste is inadvertently used without being consumed.

Bottom Line

During Suhur (the meal eaten before dawn), people might decide to use a flavorless miswakor clean their teeth with toothpaste. But failing to brush at Suhur does not negate the legitimacy of the fast, and if necessary, a mistake can be used in its place.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) teachings are a major source of inspiration for the usage of Miswak, a natural twig used for oral cleanliness. In Islamic culture, it is highly valued for both its spiritual importance and health advantages.

In summary, while opinions may differ, it is recommended to maintain the integrity of the fast by prioritizing the use of a miswak or toothpaste with prudence when fasting.

May Allah give us discernment in our deeds and lead us during this holy month of Ramadan.

We tried that with GWOT, but were constrained from fully civilizing them, because goatfucking, child harems, and redeeming your honor by murdering whoever looked at you crosseyed is "their culture".
Well, yeah. Obviously we'll have to hang all the globohomo tyrants tying our wrists before the world can be truly recolonized.

When you look for world circumcisions map is just America and the worst shitholes.

Oh oh oh "miswak" I know that term.
It's what progressive Muslims use to beat their disobedient waifus into submission.
Praise God!

At least 214 Jews and people of half- or three-quarters-Jewish ancestry have been awarded the Nobel Prize, accounting for 22% of all individual recipients worldwide between 1901 and 2023, and constituting 36% of all US recipients during the same period. In the scientific research fields of Chemistry, Economics, Physics, and Physiology/Medicine, the corresponding world and US percentages are 26% and 38%, respectively. Among women laureates in the four research fields, the Jewish percentages (world and US) are 29% and 41%, respectively. Of organizations awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, 22% were founded or co-founded principally by Jews or by people of half-Jewish descent. Since the turn of the century (i.e., from the year 2000 onward), Jews have been awarded 24% of all Nobel Prizes and 26% of those in the scientific research fields. (Jews currently make up approximately 0.2% of the world's population and 2% of the US population.)

Oh no, I was thinking Africa vs. Australia. Jews have done well at the Nobels, it was a dunking on the Muslim world moment.

It says it CAN break the fast but then says that " It doesn't but people tend to use old timey traditional methods of tooth cleaning as well during the time". So, which is it jackass? You a toothpaste eater?
