Does a game like this actually exist? - Looking for a game from my dream

So this morning I had a strange dream where I was playing a game, where during it my mind was saying "wait, I've seen this game before!" but even while asleep, my brain was saying I was getting it confused with something else because I had actually never seen it before. Now that I'm awake, I'm firmly in the "I've never seen this game before" camp.

But that made me instead wonder if I had dreamed about a future experience, and thus if this is something I should seek out.

Kiwis tend to know their shit better than anywhere else I could think to ask, so I'm asking here.

Okay so here's the details I remember from the dream.

.... I think the game/games were in first person (its possible only one of them was).

.... It was a trilogy of games all involving like, paranormal investigations and murder mysteries.

.... the third game in the trilogy had a title that gave little or no hint to it being connected, in fact in-dream there was a part where I was like "Oh, this is a sequel to THOSE!" so apparently the connection was a surprise.

.... A mechanic might involve time travel or being able to see into the past (and I have to admit the minute I typed this line I got a feeling of deja vu).

.... Possibly Japanese as one of the major characters was a dark-haired schoolgirl in a blue outfit.

..... There was an area where you were in a white void with tons of black shadows that were either the girl, or else folded cranes (indeed I think the dream wanted to say the game was even called "Krane" with a K, but it might not be called that in reality).

.... There was a puzzle in which you had to control a murderous ghost to follow you for some reason, and in the dream I commented that she had terrible AI as I would clearly turn down a hallway, but instead of turning to follow me she would keep running straight (often down a completely different hallway) and I would have to keep going back for her. I think we were in a cave system or a basement at this point.

.... the major thing I remember was a plot twist: I was (I think) investigating either some girl's murder or some girl's vengeful spirit, but midway thru I get to see the events from her perspective and its revealed (in a really "symbolic" way) that she was raped. And I think I then play as her for awhile as things are going nuts visually.... in the dream I remember this being a powerful moment (this may have even been the moment I saw the white void full of black blobby cranes).

So those are all the details I'm sure about.

Anyway if you guys know games that match these details even vaguely, let me know.

Yeah, I think that's the closest thing I know of.

What came to mind for me was Time Hollow.

Gameplay[edit]​

Time Hollow is a graphic adventure game, in which the player controls protagonist Ethan Kairos as he attempts to find his missing parents. Using the "Hollow Pen", he is able to open circular portals into the past after he has experienced a "flashback" of a certain location.[4] By opening portals into different areas, he is able to recover or place items and people, as well as observe the past.[4] Although time stops while a portal is open, certain characters are able to interact with Ethan. The player must draw these portals with the stylus, and once the portal is closed, a certain amount of "Time" is lost, equivalent to HP. Portions of Time equivalent to one portal, called "Chrons", can be recovered by finding Ethan's cat, Sox, in the game world. The game is supplemented by animated cut scenes showing important events and flashbacks. Backgrounds are static, and layered to provide a 3D perspective effect when they are moved from side to side.[4]

I wouldn't get too hung up on exact matches. I mean, this is a game from a dream--this exact game might not even exist (it would be totally wild if this post inspires someone to make the game for real... but I'm not holding my breath for it).

It's more likely the dream took several inspirations and kinda mixed them together. So it should be read as a mix of seeing what I've played that maybe it was drawing from (it is telling that so far half the games listed are ones I'm familiar with) and maybe themes and experiences that I've been looking for.

Which... yeah so far this topic has given me a couple of "Okay I need to play that now" cases, so its been a net benefit so far.
 
I don't know but it sounds interesting, aside from being first-person.

Just a personal preference, I like seeing my characters, so first-person dungeon crawlers are typically my least favorite type of RPG. Also, I'm just not into stuff like FPS, rarely playing them, I don't think the gameplay feels fun and hate my limited range of vision (especially bad for horror games).

I haven't played the Siren games, but I know most of the beats you're describing closely occur at some point in the games, except maybe the third one having an unrecognizable title. Also not quite sure about the rape, although other assorted terrible things happen.


Even though you're dealing with mixed up dream mush, it's a pretty good match. Idk if that's a good or bad indicator for the games.

I've actually played the first Siren, and yeah I think some aspects of it helped inspire the dream.

So far the games people have mentioned that I haven't played (or even heard of) are Fear and Hunger: Termina, and Time Hollow.. which are both now on a "I better hit this soon" list.

So one aspect of the dream I forgot to mention is, in the dream, my inner voice said "Oh, this is the game that lets player played!" but even in the dream my head was arguing with itself and saying "no, dude, this isn't the game they played, you're thinking of Danganronpa."

Which, yeah, when I woke up I realized that side of my head was right--whatever game I was dreaming about looked nothing like Danganronpa (no pink blood, no exaggerated anime characters... though DR does have surreal visuals at times). Though it did kind of resemble Twilight Syndrome or Clock Tower at times.

EDIT: I'm just remembering this, but I remember in an Oddheader video he mentioned some Japanese murder mystery game that has a prosaic plot, but there's hidden events you can trigger that imply something more effed up is going on. Does anyone remember what game that was or what video it was in?
 
Echo Night? That's all I got. I've played a lot of weird games but surprisingly most aren't horror games.

The First Voyage for PSP has a translation patch. That was the first Echo Night I played. It's different from the others. It's a point and click where you have to help the ghosts on the ship in order to progress. Since I played it without knowing the backstory from the first PS1 game it was a very weird experience.
 
OP I just want to say I found the game of my dreams/recollection after a decade long search once so don't give up!

Nevermind, ignore the below since its not a girl thats the protagonist even. But maybe someone will have some cool recollections on this old weird game so im keeping it.
I only know one game that is like the ones you mention but sadly it is not a trilogy. Though it is divided in chapters.

I doubt it will help. Sorry.
