Semicolons can join two independent sentences that have a related reference, by replacing either the period or the ", and". Kinda dumb if you ask me; my opinion means jack shit.

The better use of a semicolon is in a list where commas are also used. Niggers are the racial majority in the following cities: Detroit, MI; Birmingham, AL; Baltimore, MD; Newark, NJ; Cleveland, OH.

I think they're useful; others think they're pointless. You don't need them, but they have a place.
