Some of them are good. A lot of them aren't. Many people go into the field for the same reason they'd go into something like nursing or childcare or social work, and inevitably burn out in the same way. Ultimately, they aren't going to fix any of your problems. The most they could ever do is work with you to identify what those problems are and what you can do to fix them. Outside of maybe some specific issues and treatments like exposure therapy. But usual talk therapy is just that: talk.

therapy is grift.
i'm not even religious, but i really think that you will unironically get better results for your mental health from going to some church, getting in the confessional, and talking to the priest there about whatever bothers you at the moment. and it's cheaper as well.

Some people are like why do you like going to confession. This is legitimately why. I can just talk about whatever is bothering me and get some advice, absolution, and on my way.

Some “therapists” are legit. Like Mr. Myagi said, most are not. There are also different types of providers who can practice therapy. Psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed mental health counselors and social workers, etc. Don’t go to a psychiatrist if you need “talk” therapy, they are mainly there if you need to be prescribed medication, although some psychologists can also prescribe meds. I had a psychologist, who was a PhD (PsyD) with a specialty in neuropsych. She knew about how brains worked on a biological level, and had a lot of hands on experience working with different populations in the clinical setting. She helped me tremendously, and I also learned a lot of tangentially related things through our conversations. She warned me to stay away from anyone who is not a Psychologist if you actually have a complex mental health issue that you need help with. LMHC/LMFTs and social workers can be okay if you just need someone to talk to, but they usually just complete a course for a certificate, so they will not be equipped if you have issues with something like moderate to severe depression or anxiety, or ADHD for example.

Most are phonies who have problems of their own. I'm sure there are a few legit ones out there. It's a profession that's very loosey goosey emotion driven so I would think it leaves a lot of room for half assed therapists to emerge and no repercussions for not doing what they advertise. It's not like being a pilot where lack of skill will result in an inevitable crash or accident.

Therapy is helpful for people who need therapy. It’s kind of ruined, though, when the whole thing stagnates and the therapist is just taking money from a serendipity addict with an insurmountable tolerance
