Well the simplest explanation is that the brain craves stimulation, when you close your eyes your brain will attempt to fill the gap in stimulation with fake visuals and your brain might then interpret these as being beings.

A more realistic explanation though is that what you're doing is opening your third eye and seeing beyond the veil of reality into what is beyond. But beware if you can see them they can see you.
