I went from using the internet almost not at all for years, to using it every day all day long most days. I think the notable areas to avoid are the social medias/propaganda machines. Stay away from politics discussion is my policy, severely limit even the discussions that you agree with others about. Just let it be a footnote to your convo and not the whole thing. Make your jokes and move on, but don't get dragged into discussing or arguing about it. Not arguing with anyone online is a great policy. It is a net loss for all parties involved almost 100% of the time.

As long as you are spending time places that make you happy I see no harm in excess at all. I have had lots of fun over the past couple of years online. Just, you...

i would love to give up the internet and go live in the mountains or some shit, but my job requires the internet, and no one is going to pay me to live in the mountains, so.

Wrong, that's how they get you. The "real world" is all part of their plot they're trying to impose on us. Read your Frankfurt School, discursive practices will bring digital liberation that frees us from the stifling "reality" authority wants to bind us with. Wake up sheeple! Making anime "real" concedes to the violence of "reality" rather than achieving true liberation!

The truth is that it's not inherently bad to use the internet, it's just that it's almost like some kind of biblical trial where if someone doesn't control themselves they'll wind up forever lost off the path jacking off to hentai or screaming at people on Twitter as they slowly transform into Noah Antwiler.

It's the social and degenerative elements of the internet that really lure people into spending time on stuff they regret; it's pretty rare that I watch some old British dude on YT teach me how solenoid switches work where afterwards I'm like "you know, I should use the internet less". There's a lot of stuff I do/read online that I'm really grateful I have access to, tbh.

Yes and no. I wish I could use the Internet less and hang out with people, study, learn an instrument IRL a bit more, but I already do those things a lot and I do find a lot of useful information relating to math, programming, physics and other nerdy shit I'm into (read: anime and video games) online. The Internet is a tool and you can use it well or poorly. I try my best to use it moderately well so that at least I can confer some material/mental benefit from using it. Plus, I've found that most people aren't worth talking to IRL because they are just so vastly unrelatable from my POV (completely different interests and values, no real topic we can have a real conversation about), so the feeling of missing out on certain friendships and the like has disappeared. I don't hate the real world and don't see it as an escape, but I understand that outside of exercise and doing what I am interested in and being with people who are somewhat like-minded, there's no point in trying to force connections in the real world that aren't and never will be there.
