I think that life almost certainly exists elsewhere in the universe, simply because of how quickly it formed here on Earth once the planet cooled enough to provide the necessary conditions for it. The difficult part is estimating how common it is, and what form it is most likely to take.

I'm personally of the view that single-celled life is probably not all that uncommon, while multicellular life is much rarer. Intelligent life is probably exceedingly rare, simply because of how rare it is here on Earth. Of all the species which have evolved throughout our planet's history, only ours has evolved the intelligence sufficient to build a technological civilization, and even then, it is only really a tiny minority of us who are actually responsible for this progress. If things were left to the wits of the average person, we'd probably still be living in caves.
