Do antivirus programs still suck donkey dick?

Running MiKKKro$oft Windows on a laptop after more than a decade of UNIRONICALLY USING LINUX

Laptop came preinstalled with a trial of McAfee. I remember McAfee the software sucking, but I am a fan of McAfee the person. Has the antivirus software gotten less shitty or is it still as unstable as John McAfee, himself?

I would like to feel as safe whilst browsing yiff porn in windows, as I did in Linux.

It depends on your situation really. Common sense will serve you best most of the time, but if you are in a situation where you take a lot of thumb drives from people or download a lot of niche stuff, using an anti virus can be quite beneficial.
 
Every single anti-virus I've ever used has BEEN the virus.

I stopped using them in 2015 or so and haven't noticed any issues.

The modern McAfee antivirus has nothing to do with John McAfee, and in fact, John hates it. Malwarebytes is fine.
 
malwarebytes is alright, can be a bit annoying at times though

common sense goes a long way but depending on what you do it's not enough. if you plan to pirate anything or even just download files or tools or programs or mods from non corporate sources then you should use malware protection in addition to common sense.
 
I've used ESET for years. In that time, it's gone through peaks and troughs but I wouldn't be without it.

The worst computer virus (actually a root kit) to ever ride roughshod over my virtual defences was contracted during an attempt to track down translated English lyrics for a song by a Romanian black metal band (this was before services like Google translate were there to provide their own off-kilter versions).

It does demonstrate that you don't need to travel to the sketchiest corners of the internet to bring back something nasty.

Never really bought this argument. I can visit seemingly harmless sites with zero intention of downloading anything and still have AV block said site from installing a trojan or some other shitty malware. It isn't even ad related as I use adblock. I know you don't download shit you don't understand, dont open emai, from that Nigerian prince or the bank you never signed up for, but I think there are legit reasons to use AV.
It's not even a matter of noticing weird shit. Why would a virus in current year install some kind of blatant popup BS, when it's much more useful for a hacker to either install some cryptominer or keylogger? Atleast the crypto you may notice increased PC usage, but spyware wouldn't draw much attention. I have to wonder how much AV free people would find on their machines if they used an AV scan just because you don't have redirects doesn't mean you arent infected.
 
Just use Windows Defender (yes it's actually decent) and Malwarebytes anti-malware. That's all you need, plus a good dose of Common sense.

This. You have to be a stupid no brained nigger to get a virus in 2021. Windows pretty much treats you as a liability so you have to actively go out of your way to get your computer infected.

windows defender did that to me once, and automatically killed the file immediately when i tried to launch the cracked game. had to manually disable it to get around lol
malwarebytes on the other hand didnt do anything on its own, except when i ordered it to do a scan manually, then it quarantined the file

Avast did this with any legal copy of a Falcom game on PC. Also used to do this with Steam.

Legend of Heroes is not a virus, you Czech bylats.
