My girlfriend moved to my apartment with her old dog, who's cute but basically nonstop farting while we're at work and my living room is basically uninhabitable right now (especially as there isn't a lot of air circulation due to living on the ground floor). I thought about buying a air purifier but I don't know if those actually work or not. So do there work? Any other solution? Recommendations for a model for a medium small apartment will be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Also appreciate recommended price range.

I've got a Winix and a Honeywell I bought when I lived in an apartment. I'd definitely say they help, there's a noticeable difference for me when pollen is high in my house vs. someone who doesn't have one.

One I bought a decade ago and the other five years ago or so and they work perfectly. Just have to change the filters once in a while.

No, air purifiers will not remove smells from farts. A smell from farts is caused by elemental gases and compounds, and are at the same molecular scale as the air you breath.

Your best option is to use a fan at your window to force air in or out to dilute the gases causing the smell. Air refreshener won't help either.

Edit:

Air purifiers are a scam unless you have hayfever or other allergies cause by particulates; your home is not an airtight vessel and no air filter will ever outdo natural air flow and pressure changes from normal everyday movements of weather from open windows.

I have a Levoit air purifier I use in my living room, just make sure you change the filters and they work pretty well.
I mostly have it to help with pollen and dust though, I don’t know how well or if at all they’d filter out dog farts.
I can anecdotally confirm that the mid-sized version of the Levoit, with their upgraded smoke filter, does a great job of clearing out fart-type smells as well as allergens.

NASA found that chrysanthemum plants were the best for filtering toxins in the atmosphere. I think they are also poisonous to pets. Use this information judiciously.

Your problem is the dog excessively farts. You do not need an air purifier.
  • Get a slow feeder bowl for the dog to reduce swallowing air when scarfing down food needlessly fast.
  • Switch to a grain-free dog food. Grain is an unnecessary filler that provides little to no nutritional value for dogs.
  • Introduce sweet potato to help digestion.
  • Some dogs are allergic to chicken and beef, so switching to turkey, venison, fish, etc can resolve those issues.
  • Foods that cause excessive dog gas: table scraps, corn, broccoli, dairy, soy beans, peas.
  • The dog has it's own food, so do not feed it human food even if it begs or stares. If the dog tries to steal food, the dog requires discipline to teach boundaries in it's life. Dogs need structure.
