DNAinfo and Gothamist Are Shutting Down
A week ago, reporters and editors in the combined newsroom of DNAinfo and Gothamist, two of New York City’s leading digital purveyors of local news, celebrated victory in their vote to join a union.

On Thursday, they lost their jobs, as Joe Ricketts, the billionaire founder of TD Ameritrade who owned the sites, shut them down.

At 5 p.m., a post went up on the sites from Mr. Ricketts announcing the decision. He praised them for reporting “tens of thousands of stories that have informed, impacted and inspired millions of people.” But he added, “DNAinfo is, at the end of the day, a business, and businesses need to be economically successful if they are to endure.”
:story:

one DNAinfo reporter, Katie Honan, said, “If this is the future of journalism, it should be a career for people, not a postcollege hobby.”

You're a winner Katie, Godspeed.

riggity wrecked.

Though tbh I never heard about either of these sites until I read this thread, so they must have been just barely economically viable to begin with.

It's funny because unionizing actualized their socialist paradise: unemployment and starvation.

indeed

Mr. Ricketts, who lost money every month of DNAinfo’s existence
The business was failing anyway, so the timing on this was malpractice by the Writers Guild of America East. “The worst crime against working people is a company which fails to operate at a profit.” --Samuel Gompers, founder of the American Federation of Labor. Unions need to be organizing TD Ameritrade, not something on its financial deathbed.

mostly read by artisan pickle makers in Brooklyn.
DNAinfo and Gothamist, which Mr. Ricketts bought in the spring, attracted more than 9 million readers a month, in New York and other cities where they operate satellite sites, DNAinfo said.

Screaming like a child didn't get you what you wanted? Color me shocked!

Did... did you try to stamp your feet a little? To show them you mean business?
They are getting three months of paid “administrative leave” at full salary, plus four weeks of severance, DNAinfo said.
They are getting a softer landing than most workers with an actual union contract, lol

Dunno about either of these websites but shanghaiist (part if Gothamist) was absolute garbage half the articles were about nongs shitting on subway platforms or English teachers getting into drunken brawls and had nothing newsworthy

WGAEast is trying to save face. It has literally no bargaining power.

Ricketts is maybe doing this to prevent union retribution at whatever else he has a stake in that’s vulnerable. Maybe trying to head off what happened to Trump where the unions started organizing his hotels after he started with his anti-Mexican stuff on the campaign trail.

"Well, fellow deck-scrubbers, I guess now would be a great time to unionize!"
