Disney Makes Changes to ‘Snow White’ After Facing Backlash

Disney is expected to make some major changes to its oldest princess.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) was one of the first major motion films produced by Walt Disney Pictures, and its popularity is still high today. After 85 years, the film is getting a live-action remake, but we shouldn’t expect the plot to be the same.
The beautiful and kindhearted princess Snow White charms every creature in the kingdom except one — her jealous stepmother, the Queen. When the Magic Mirror proclaims Snow White is the fairest one of all, she must flee into the forest, where she befriends the lovable seven dwarfs — Doc, Sneezy, Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Sleepy and Dopey. But when the Queen tricks Snow White with an enchanted apple, only the magic of true love’s kiss can save her!
Rachel Zegler, who has been cast as Snow White in the remake, shared in a recent interview with Buzzfeed that Disney is looking to make the princess “stronger.”

“There’s not much I can say about it besides the fact that Snow White has constantly been criticized,” Zegler said. “Even though she’s the original Disney princess and we love her so much, [she’s been] criticized for existing solely for a prince, existing solely to be rescued.
“And I think that our director, Marc Webb, and everyone who’s working on this film has really taken her narrative and turned it into something that’s a lot stronger and I’m very, very excited to be able to bring that to life.“
Zegler is currently trending for her starring role in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (2021), which was just recently released. She will join Gal Gadot (Evil Queen) for the movie that is expected to be released in 2023.

While we can expect some of the same Disney magic to be involved in the film, it seems the character development for Snow White will be much different this time around compared to the original.

Snow White is a stronger character already that feminists seem to ignore. Yes, she wanted a prince, but that’s just daydreams lots of teenagers would have (she’s supposed to be 14 in the original Disney version). Though, the evil queen pretty much makes her life miserable, but she shows strength through still finding happiness despite that condition. When Snow White runs away, she offers to cook and clean for the dwarves to make herself useful and insure her survival. Her biggest flaw was probably being naive and trusting the Evil Queen in disguise, but that’s fairytales for you. Snow White’s strength doesn’t come from beating all the men in a sword fight, it’s from using her skills as a homemaker and genuinely positive outlook on life despite hardship. I think by feminism’s own standards, she’s a strong character as it is, but feminism these days seems to mean acting as much like a man as possible, which is a tiered cliche at this point.

It used to be that America suffered the excesses and depravity of Hollywood's denizens because they in turn would create new and novel cinematic works of art. "It's a Wonderful Life", "The Godfather", "Bridge over the River Kwai". "Sleeping Beauty".

Americans would even endure the egotism of Hollywood stars and directors and producers who would continually lecture us at awards shows, late night television, and in the movies we paid to see themselves. How dumb Americans are. How provincial. How ignorant. How we didn't understand fine art.

But for twenty years now and especially in the last decade, Hollywood has been unable to do the one thing they get paid to do. Make one decent movie. And certainly make one that is original.

As has been pointed out, everything being produced now are sequels and prequels and reboots and live-action re-imaginings of stories that have already been told, and better.

It's grave robbing where the culprits are digging up the remains of fan favorites and wearing the corpse skin of characters we used to recognize.

I don't know when it will end.

I honest-to-god-no-joke thought that that woman playing Snow White was a troon. Truly the fairest of them all.

Why can't we just have a beautiful, down-to-earth, conscientious, go with the flow, kind to everyone female protagonist? Those are actually very admirable traits. Alas.

Revisionism is ok when they do it.

I hope Walt Disney cant see what his company has become...

Wasn’t Disney the same company that stayed silent even while China was profiting off of Mulan being filmed in front of concentration camps?

Pretty much. Its ok when China does it.

Hell, they thanked them for allowing them to film close by. Thats why Disney is truly one of the evilist companies I have ever seen.

That's another thing I've found to be odd, kindness is almost an obsolete concept in media these days. I think the last movie I saw that really emphasized it was a Mel Gibson movie, ironically.
Compassion was an outdated sexist gender stereotype, it had to go.

Seriously, everything is just so mean these days, every joke has a stinging barb at the end, every simple picture taken has to have NOT FOR CONSUMPTION BY WRONGTHINKERS stamped at the bottom, every handshake hides a concealed knife, every held open door has the person holding it putting their leg out to trip you..... all because you might be "one of them Nazis"

I wouldn't be shocked if the new Snow White when asked what is best in life responds: "To crush your enemies und see them driven before you and hear the lamentations of the Naht-zees!"

Will the Dwarf's all be men?

Doc surely will be a woman of colour.

Dopey is ableist and so will be out. If kept, possible the only straight white male dwarf.

Sneezy will need a face mask.

One will at least be non-binary.

Snow White will surely come in and innovate their entire business with her keen intellect and eye for business.

The Dwarfs shouldn't be minors, they need a greener more sustainable business. Even though they were mining diamonds, mining has connotations with fossil fuels and diamonds are a stereotypical female desired gem.

The prince will be some soy.

Is Dwarf offensive? Maybe they need to do.
The problematic ones will be replaced with Rapey, Pedo, and AIDS.

[she’s been] criticized for existing solely for a prince, existing solely to be rescued.

Yeah, not like she took on a maternal role to the dwarves, took care of them and their house, made them meals, while at the same time being firm figure who was not going to let them get away without being polite and knowing their manners.

Or is that sexist now, too?

Who am I kidding, it probably is.

I bet that you can find those same people opining that "tomboy" characters are sexist because their existence implies that heroism can only come in a masculine shape while at the same time condemning feminine characters for "perpetuating regressive gender roles".

Until all films are filled with nothing but "girl boss marvel-tier quipper" type of characters the woke sure won't rest.

I'll try to hold back from making the obvious jab at the lead actress appearance so let's just say that "fairest of it all" was interpreted differently by the producers of the movie.

The only remotely watchable Disney live action reboot was the Cruella movie probably because its lead was a cute actress who could actually act and the film had a visually striking costume design.

Guess you can't go wrong with a recap of the Devil Wears Prada.

Historically there have been many strong women who were feminine and were fine with traditionally female roles yet could hold their own against many a man if they needed to. As you say modern feminism seems to shame women for doing anything feminine and wants women to act like men. It really is unfair when you have danger-haired hambeasts on one side trying to dictate how you should behave and live your life while on the other side men in wigs and dresses are trying to gain access to your bathrooms. locker rooms, sports etc.

The "modern edge" will be Snow White being saved by her OnlyFans simps, and dreaming of a sugar daddy who pays her rent.
