It doesn't really matter how long it takes in absolute terms (within reason) when it's a machine doing the work. If it takes me fifteen minutes to wash dishes by hand and an hour to wash in the dishwasher, it's still saved me fifteen minutes.
the 15 minutes is neglible because in the 15 minutes of prepping the dishes for the machine, you could've just finished it then and there. but i soak my dishes in soapy water until i bother to wash them. you can't just stick dirty dishes in the washer or it'll break. and that's also an hour of water use.

So you save money on water and electricity doing it by hand and repair costs from when your clogged hose causes the pump to burn out.

I like them but be prepared to clean out the sump occasionally and also to pull off the water trap for the drain *very* occasionally and clean it out.

Lipids and undissolved soap can build up and prevent the dishwasher from draining correctly. The task stinks but it's pretty quick and more effective than Draino and won't eat up your seals with caustics.

I prefer to wash dishes by hand soon after using them, rather than letting them fester in the dishwasher until there's a full load.

Washing machines use almost no water in comparison to hand washing. They fill up once and reuse that water over and over again. They also don't use very much electricity. They use maybe use 0.5kWh to 1kWh per load. That's like $0.10/load. They're more efficient than slaves.

YOU MENTAL NIGGER
It’s not about the water useage. It’s about growing up and not having them so you don’t develop habits to use them. I make good money now I’m not worried about my water bill.
I hand wash despite having a dish washer because I grew up poor

Dishwashers are awesome.Make sure your dishwasher has a hot water line feeding it. Run your sink hot water until hot before you start a load. Use cascade platinum tabs

I have a shitty $25 dishwasher I bought off marketplace and if i follow those steps there is no need to prerinse or do any of the dumb shit anti dishwasher people think are necessary. I could put a old car motor on there and it would come out sparkling.

I've had pretty bad luck with getting my dishes fully cleaned with my dishwasher; but I'm pretty sure it's just because this one in particular sucks ass. So I just pre-soak them now, which is kind of a pain but it's a lot easier than doing it by hand.

Try what I said in my post above. The cascade platinum tabs are a necessity, along with the hot water.
It is possible that your heating element doesn't work and that will make a big difference. There should be a sticker on the inside frame of the door with the model number, Google how to run a diagnostic test and it should tell you if there are problems.

You also need to clean the drain screen every couple washes because it builds up with grease.
