The 6th generation of gaming is most likely my favorite one. For those who owned a console during this generation, which one did you have, and what did you think of each one?

PS2: It was the best selling console of all time, but honestly it felt like it was only marginally more popular than the Xbox. Maybe that says more about the people I knew over what was indeed more popular. I don't think the PS2 ever had a game iconic enough to completely define the console. Many of its popular games also released on other platforms anyway.

Xbox: I owned an Xbox during this generation, and I loved it. Halo and Halo 2 were absolutely iconic, and defined the console. There were also plenty of great exclusives such as Crimson Skies and Project Gotham Racing. I also had the Xbox port of Half Life 2 for some reason, and even that was decent.

Gamecube: I don't remember too many people who had Gamecubes, but I was already a teenager when it released, so I can understand why. I was always kind of fascinated by them, but never cared enough to buy one. I liked how sleek it was, it had a nice design, was much smaller than any other console, and it literally had a handle. I didn't play any Gamecube games until years later when I bought a Wii.

Dreamcast: I am not even including this on the poll. Number one, I'm not even sure it was 6th generation. Number two, I only knew one kid who ever owned a Dreamcast, and he was a weird faggot. If you owned a Dreamcast during this time, either you were retarded or your parents loathed you.

Gamecube, PS2 and Dreamcast. Didn't own anything Xbox-related until the 360. PS2 had the best variety and tons of quality games, but the Gamecube was no slouch either.

PS2. I got the PS1 kinda late from a classmate that was selling it for $50 and the majority of games I got for it were fighters... some of which had sequels on the PS2 (e.g. Tekken 4 and Tekken Tag), hence the jump to that. I also had a group of friends I used to hang out with were all we did was play fighters, and in their houses they had PS2 as well, so at the time it was the logical conclusion.

PS2 all the way. Bought it on the day San Andreas came out.

I still have a few PS2s kicking around and tons of games stacked away.

I voted GameCube because I got it first but ended up with all three. GameCube first coming from a Nintendo 64 then a PS2, and finally Xbox. Hard to say which console I put the most hours into but probably the PS2 between Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas.

All in all it’s probably the generation of console gaming I have the fondest memories of. Hours upon hours of fun with GTA, Halo, Morrowind, Wind Waker and Super Smash Bros. Melee. I distinctly remember one summer vacation spent playing Super Mario Sunshine with my younger sister. We seldom got along and it was a great bonding experience.

All three, hell yeah.

Xbox was my favorite. It usually had the best versions of multiplatform games, and you never had to worry about memory cards thanks to the hard drive. There were a healthy number of PC ports, too, at a time when PC gaming was CD-ROM based and kind of crappy. Controller S was the most comfortable controller overall, albeit, Gamecube's was better for games designed specifically around it. And it was the first to the hacking scene, where I could load it full of Super Nintendo games and play those.

Gamecube at the time was balls. I saw it as a Smash Bros. machine, and not much else. I didn't enjoy Metroid Prime or Super Mario Sunshine, so there wasn't a lot there for me when it was current. Not to mention, the Memory Card 59 was pathetic next to PS2's 8mb cards and Xbox's 8gb HDD, and I didn't want to have to nag my parents for more memory cards. Gamecube had no Grand Theft Auto, no Final Fantasy X, no Silent Hill. Not even Psychonauts. Donkey Konga was its big rhythm game, and it turned out to be full of bad covers and filler. Pretty gross. Ironically though, Gamecube turned out to be the best one of all to emulate, so now I seek out its games if a multiplat I wanted to play released for it.

PlayStation 2 was ubiquitously the best console of its generation, but I've always seen it as a necessary evil. It's a slow, clunky hunk of junk that blares BROROROOOOOOOOOOONG at you when you start it up, and then you have to wait longer than any other console for it to load from disc. Then you play your game, you go to save, and it's slow to access your MEMORY CARD(8MB)(for PLAYSTATION®2). After a bit, the disc drive can't read CD-based games, and sooner or later, it'll just fail. But, it got a little bit of everytthing, and a lot of multiplats that came to Xbox were on PS2 first. Even that Capcom Five thing cucked Nintendo by leaving them with only the worst one as an exclusive, and the others winding up with PS2 ports. Because if you could port your game to PS2, you were stupid not to.

So today, I guess my favorite is, ironically, the Gamecube, considering it's the most accessible. I have heard about Xboxes starting to fail lately, and PS2s have always been timebombs, while Gamecubes seem to be holding up. Full backwards compatibility through Wii and excellent emulation also helps a lot. Plus, you know, Nintendo doesn't port shit. Most of their Gamecube games are still Gamecube exclusives. Countless good PS2 and Xbox games have been rereleased in some form on newer platforms.

I think the fat PS2 models were notorious for that.

The trick then was to ferociously clean the disc as much as possible, then pray to whatever deity you know/believe in to hope it works. Or, sometimes, leave the room.

while Gamecubes seem to be holding up.
Throw that bitch off a cliff, it'll still hold up.

That's Nintendo for you.

The Dreamcast was the first 6th gen console, show some fucking respect. It's the only console I've gotten on launch (well, I begged my parents for it) to this day. I had all of them and the Dreamcast was/is my favorite, so much wasted potential. I still think the VMU is one of the coolest things ever made.
Other than that I'd say the PS2 because I had the most games for it and it was backwards compatible. The games I wanted for the Gamecube were always too expensive or hard to find, so I didn't end up getting very many, but what I did have I loved, and I'm a sucker for the graphics on that thing.
The only reason I got an Xbox was for Jet Set Radio Future, I think I ended up only getting 2 or 3 other games for it.

I still have my good old jailbroken PS2 with about a hundred games stacked somewhere. It was my first console ever; I got it for Christmas along with GTA San Andreas. I remember spending days glued to the screen playing nonstop. I never had any other console besides PlayStations until I bought my sister's Switch last year.

I had a cube and xbox but I DEFINITELY played xbox more. It's my favorite console generation hands down, the cube is just too damn expensive to collect for now as well while Xbox is super affordable. Likely one of the best entry level retro gaming consoles around because of it too.

Got a PS2 slim for Christmas in 2004, I had no idea they made a slim version at the time so I thought my mom got scammed and bought some fake knock off version, but I got Jet Li Rise To Honor with it and I loved it.
Thought I'd be Sony fan for life but then I got an xbox 360 years later and I'm glad I got that over the PS3, I hated the Ps3 controller.

We had a dreamcast but I think it was something my brother either stole or borrowed from a friend. He was weird as shit so your comment checks out. I think he only borrowed it to play Resident Evil Code Veronica I never saw any other dreamcast game besides that one.

I got a Wii and realized quickly the novelty wore off VERY fast. The only game I genuinely liked on it was No More Heroes. My dad was fucking BAFFLED at Mario Kart and how you could turn just by turning the controller. Come to think of it I think he bought more for himself, he liked the Tiger Woods game.

Playstation 1-2 and the gameboy pocket were my formative consoles.
