It sounds like D3 was a better base game though.

For D3 to "take off" they just had to adjust loot drops (to account for no more RMAH), tweak some numbers, and create a mode that wasn't tied to the terrible story.

It sounds like D4 needs a lot of work because the impression I get is the campaign story was good enough to keep people playing but the game itself is not very good.

You nailed it. D3 became a great game when they introduced RoS, retuning items, adding the best class, and adding one of the best gamemodes in any blizzard game. The brainless, fast paced, leaderboard surfing, greater rifts.

These turned D3 into essentially a modern day Gauntlet. Zipping through random dungeons to shaving seconds off a timer to be rewarded with explosions of loot at the end. You can blast D3 for a lot of aspects, but this mode kept the community alive for years and I really think D4 needs something similar (not nightmare dungeons).

I am planning on returning to D4 for this new season since I have a few friends bugging me about it, but if they havnt fixed some of my personal complaints (balancing mostly) then I will probably just put it down until a proper expansion releases.

According to that 4chan leak, it seems d4 will be hard rebooted at season 3 to try and at least recoup some form of loss. I completely believe this as it seems very Blizzard and the 4chan Blizzard leakers are clearly some insiders because they get most things correct.

How the fuck do you lose 6,930,000 in a matter of weeks? Absolute fucking lunacy, this game does not need to be online all the time and is clearly there to gauge MAUs. The only game on Blizzard's catalog with a good gameplay loop is OW2, it has problems but at its root, it is a great shooter. They tried to bleed D4's community for everything.
What's the full 4chan leak (do you have a link?), and how much do you think is true?

Let's not go crazy here. The expansion improved D3 but it still wasn't good. It went from shit to serviceable.
D3 really picked up when they realised going nuts with the seasons was the winning ticket. The intern who decided to keep the increased legendary drop rate after that season should've been given all the breast milk he wanted.

They turned D3 from a laughably bad game to one with a decent gameplay loop and fun mechanics.
No they fucking didn't. D3 was still massively flawed at its core because everyone who knew a damn about game design at Blizzard was long gone by then. RoS made the game somewhat more fun than base but there was still unsalvageable stuff like no trading, the laughable end game and the itemization in general. I say this as a massive "600+ hours in a game he hates" faggot. Glad i didn't make the same mistake this time around and bought the game, D4 seems even more disastrous than the first couple of months in D3 were.

Edit: To be fair, i left D3 before seasons started and wasn't even online for the Necromancer anymore so the game might have gotten improvements i have missed.

So what you're saying is that they turned a laughably bad end game into one that was more fun? Though it never will live up to D1 or D2 it's still better than D4.

Pretty sure I said that and I agree, as a guy with 200~ hours in RoS (PS4 version, never played the PC version)

Nah, when i left the end game was Grifts and Ancient items farming, marginally less dogshit than the non existant base D3 end game. Fun it sure wasn't. I don't know if seasons fixed something with that. D3 remains the single most disapointing game i've ever played. It's crazy how D4 seems to have trumped it in its shitieness.

I left d3 before the end games kciked in. I think I did one rift, realised it was E-consoooomerism and bailed. I don't need the autistic loop for pointless points to have fun.
I played 15 minutes of D4 and quit because I'm not playing a game where I lag in single player.

Looks like Blizzard pulled a Ubisoft Division 2 and fucked up the new season and had to delay launching it for a few hours.

Diablo IV is on steam now, but requires you to repurchase it if you want the honor of launchig it via steam to get the blizzard launcer to then launch it....

in their defense that's how any game with an external account works, steam simply can't know where and if you purchased it. you can't add ubisoft or EA games either, you have to buy them all via steam first, and then maybe they get added in their prospective launchers (although EA has put steam integration in star wars squadrons if you buy it via steam for some reason, no need to start origin anymore. which makes the origin version worse as I found out later...)

you can still add it as external app and get the same experience basically.

New season was a typical Blizzard launch

-Season is delayed literally minutes before its supposed to start
-Servers come online 2 hours later, but no cross play because its broken
-Servers (xbox) stay online for about 4 hours before dying again
-Cross play remains broken today

I got to play a few hours of couch co op at least, wife is a Sorc and I decided to try Barb again. Those few hours reminded me why I really dont like the D4 barb and I decided to switch to Druid. Not far enough in to evaluate the new powers but the game seems faster at least. Only took me an hour to get to level 15 on the druid, and even with the lag and disconnects last night I was able to get the Barb to 32.

Looking at builds before I started I noticed the sorcs and barbs still have the same problem they had at launch. 3 fucking cooldowns on every build. Yeah I really like using every shout/armor for every build, fun game design. I feel like D3 even had a bigger variety of builds.

Also for people discussing the steam launch. If you already have it on BNET and want to play on steamdeck do not bother with the steam version, you can easily add the BNET version via lutris.

At least D2R had a stable season launch. Let me list the exhaustive and definitive list of changes they made to the game for this season:

So we are 62, I switched to Druid because Barbarian continues to be boring as fuck. The XP changes are really nice, we got to 50 in just a few after work play sessions, it has really helped change my views on the game. When I played on release it felt extremely monotonous to level, a real chore. Now we are just cruising through paragon levels, and we arent even really trying to grind.

The new blood harvest zones are huge dopamine highs. Large mob density with constant drops. The mobs drop the new skill currency as well as keys to open chests in the zone. If you deposit currency into the zones cauldron it spawns a world boss that will just fill your screen with loot after you kill it. Putting on an audiobook and just running around the zone is dynasty warriors levels of relaxing.

The new abilities seem cool, but its just another system to dump currency in. Luckily its VERY easy to acquire and level the new skills, and if you do the blood harvests you will have plenty of the armor tokens to equip them. My bear shits out blood orbs that accrue curses and then I explode into suicide ghosts that do a fuckton of damage, its pretty neat, but I dont feel the need to experiment.

Overall I dont know how much longer we will play, but the reduced level of commitment to progress has been very nice. I really want a crusader or paladin though, they added a fun unique to Druid that makes boulder act like hammers, but I havnt seen any footage of it and as far as I know, boulder sucks.
