The takeaway from this post and a lot of what has been going on over the past few months (the pirate software debaucle in particular comes to mind) is that you should be incredibly wary of people who 'only' respond to prestige. Those 90 IQ social chameleons who follow the loudest voice in the room and aren't capable of harboring an original thought. Malicious actors are very capable of saying "I have 'X' credentials so, you can listen to me when I say [a statement that blatantly contradicts any rational conclusion you could draw from the evidence at hand]" You see this frequently on twitter, and especially reddit when people say stuff like "[Occupation]-ist here, this is wrong because [something something, the progressive stack, equality, whatever, you've heard this kind of guy a million times]"

You would think that Dev, a man who does his own research, would realize that Ph.D. holders (here used to mean any doctorate and not just Ph.D.s) are not a hivemind, nor does the act of holding a Ph.D. automatically grant one special, insightful, incontrovertible knowledge into how the world works. They are still people, and they can get it wrong! Other people doing their own research doesn't always mean they read it on Facebook while on the toilet the way Dev wants it to.
The Collective Shout video, a 4.5 hour endeavor, still only has about 55k views at the time of writing, which seems to be the soft ceiling for view count on Dev's videos. The Pirate Software vid (3 hours) has over 700k views, which is an outlier for his channel. We don't have accurate numbers for some of his other long-form vids due to Dev constantly fucking with the uploads, but for those videos mentioned here the numbers we do have are 9k (lol) for Stellar Blade (1.5 hours) and 147k for Chuggaconroy (2 hours).
Not mentioned: his other 4.5 hour endeavor (the Trump AUTOGOLPE) sitting at 66k, or #GoonerGate (2.25 hours), sitting at 33k. Skullgirls (2 hours) is also sitting at 40k after Dev fucked with the upload for that vid.
For reference, YouTube pays about 2 to 25 USD per 1k views. Dev mentioned that Collective Shout took him about a month's worth of work - given his work ethic, let's lowball that at two full standard workweeks (80 hours) plus the length of the final video. Assuming that effort scales linearly with final video length and that he makes the mean payout (~$13.5) given his tendency to get demonetized, here's where I estimate his total video revenue:

Obviously just rough estimates and makes a lot of assumptions, but the only vids that seemed worth it for the effort put into them were Pirate Software and Chuggaconroy. Everything else mostly loses out to full-time burger flipping ($15/hr). It's no wonder Social Blade has now demoted his channel to a C- rating.
In short, I fully support Dev's decision to stay married to a dying channel as he loses money making content.

We're still in the "own the chuds" arc and at the end of the year, it will likely turn into "financial ruin" arc. The start of that is going to be when his next long-form essay drops, and doesn't break 50K views. He didn't beef with us on this week's seeth, but we'll see if he starts more shit.
