The original graphics have aged well. That retro look is in style. All they had to do was render the game at 4k 60fps with no "enhancements."

At some point I want to load this game up again. Is there a good guide on the best way to play this in 2025 (that isn't this remaster)?
 
There is a "remaster" of the game that already exist its pretty good.

god this UI looks awful, There are no screenshots of the inventory and other menus so i'm guessing they look so bad they don't want to show them. Wonder if you'll be able to change the colour of the hud like in the original
They didn't even update the dialogue avatars or resize said UI element for that matter, this is insultingly lazy.

It doesn't look like they increased the environmental detail at all, just upscaled textures and bolted on renderer effects like specular mapping and such. Blech.
DE had very open and 'flat' environments as an engine constraint of the time, they just couldn't push enough triangles to support a decorated world with depth and small objects scattered around the place at the scale of the world. Zero reason for a remaster to follow that with the huge completely flat planes. Disgusting.

I know it's just copied 1:1 from whatever other crap they've released, but please have micro-transactions. They have to go all in. 500 credits for GEP gun ammunition, thank you!
 
They took all of the dirty, gritty texture of the original and replaced it with fake, plastic-looking shit that makes it look like a mobile game.

This. Revision has HD texturing, a lot more gameplay features (such as achievements, mod integration with Shifter and Biomod, and enhanced and expanded maps!), and in general gives the game a new freshness. You would need to purchase and install the GOTY version first, but it's entirely worth it, in my opinion.

That'd be delving into remake territory and I suspect that Embracer/Aspyr is at the very least cognizant that the audience they're courting would have an absolute field day if that were the case. They're not that savvy though as this announcement seems to be going quite poorly.
 
I hope they do as bad of a job as possible not only because what I've seen so far is hilarious but also so that cattle class livestreamers go funkopop crazy for the remaster release and all try to make it sound like they care and then play the game live and simply don't understand how a terrible looking (the remaster looks worse than the original) game is so well regarded and brush it off as a meme and make people MATI
 
The funniest part about this remaster is that you know the visuals will be the least of the problems. It will also be a buggy, run like shit, and censored.
 
Yeah of course they couldn't let the guys over at NightDive do this shit. Looks worse than a free mod, man.
 
I was playing the soulreaver remastered duo a while back and I did think they did some pretty inoffensive work there, and you could always do the transition with the click of a button Halo CE style. I don't know what the fuck they were smoking that made them think this was passable at all.

Battery Park was especially egregious with how open it is since they needed to hide the subway area from being viewable from the statue area (too many polygons) and, honestly, the level design just looks even fucking weirder contrasted with the AI-upscaled textures and new models.

e: no karkians or greasels in the trailer, damn. I wanted to see if they kept the anuses.
