a deer, normally a herbivorous animal, has been recorded nibbling on human remains

On January 5, 2015, the camera caught a glimpse of a young white-tailed deer standing near the skeleton with a human rib bone in its mouth. Then it happened again on January 13—the camera caught a deer with another rib sticking out of its mouth like a cigar. It’s not clear whether it was the same deer in both cases, but it's certainly possible first one came back for seconds.

This is the first known evidence of a deer scavenging human bones, and the authors published their findings in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

Question is, why is there a human corpse just sitting in front of a trail camera? Some sort of forensic research?

And yes, as the article points out, herbivores will often suck on bones for nutrients. I think elephants are known to do this.

It's a body farm. They deliberately leave human remains outdoors in places to see what happens for use in forensic research.

well in a way, when we decomposed, we became one with the earth so in a way, deer have always been eating human remains in another form oh what am i saying with this hippie bullshit. that deer is fuckin mental

I like how they aren't sure if it's the same deer, I mean they all look the same to me but you'd think there would be some deer expert they could consult or maybe the forensics research institute should be able to figure that out?

Ah, Detroit then.

Giraffes are also known to lick the bones of dead animals every now and then too.

This deer is the shit.

I find it kinda of cute for him to nibble on the bone and then stop to look at the camera

Watch out there Uncle Ted.

I've heard of black squirrels attacking and eating other animals. But I didn't know that deer scavenge corpses. If they do it to human corpses they must do it to animal corpses as well.

The article said it was done on a body farm to check damage by scavengers. The deer was observed twice in January. I don't know how cold it gets in Texas in the winter or what grows there at that time of year. But it looks pretty dead in the pictures. In the winter it's hard for animals to find food. I would imagine this type of scavenging is more common in the winter if the deer can't find anything else. It's rotting carcass for lunch or a slow death from starvation.

Reading C&H as an adult was actually the first time I realized why my parents had to spend so much time at my school. Before that, I actually thought it was normal for your parents to have to talk to the principal all the time.
