I had a coworker who was probably 5’2” and at least 400 pounds. This was an easy entry level job that anyone with our shared qualifications could do.
Shared office spaces and on my first day I had the horrible luck to have to sit next to her. She smelled like Combos cheese snacks and mildew, and used a mobility scooter whenever she wasn’t in her one office chair.
Her physical self and all of her desktop clutter of snacks, a fan, et cetera, took up more than her share of allotted desk space and I barely had room for anything (long table style desk with attached computer terminals).
She would frequently take more than her share of office snacks, eat while working and get crumbs everywhere, fall asleep at her desk, and read one of those punditry news websites that are so partisan they’re not really news at all instead of working. She didn’t wash her hands after using the restroom because that would mean having to additionally get up out of her scooter. One day, there was a big snowstorm, and the next day everyone was talking about their troubles getting home. It took this coworker four hours by bus and several delays to get home, and the bus was stuck for an hour and a half. She complained and then proceeded to say that she had really needed to go to the bathroom but the city buses had no bathroom. Don’t recall exact phrasing but she basically implied she pissed herself because of the delay.
So annoying. For a time, some of my office mates and I used and spoke a foreign language for work matters, and we would talk shit in that language.
This woman was so obnoxious and unhealthy that she actually kickstarted my own health journey. Unfortunately my first attempt at that didn’t stick, but this one has. If I feel like overeating I just remember this coworker. So, thanks, I guess.
Not really a specific encounter here, but I was honestly saddened when living in the UAE to see how fat they were getting and how horrifically fast it was all happening. The creep of multinational food corporations is horrifying and the people are the result.
