I'm sad Off the Record isn't canon, I chose to buy that over Dead Rising 2, If Dragon's Dogma can get a sequel, I'm praying DR4 didn't bury the franchise too deep for a reboot given back to Japanese developers using the RE Engine.
RE engine seems to really struggle with having lots of enemies on screen at any one time but I'm hoping they can get around that. Imagine a Dead Rising game with the gore systems and zombie animation of RE2. I'd fucking cum harder than a necrophiliac at an untended graveyard.

It was a popular franchise, Capcom had to wring Blue Castle's neck to get Dead Rising 4 made so they clearly know it has some appeal. I haven't totally given up hope yet but with them sucking off Resident Evil so hard I kind of wonder if they don't see the point.

I really hope they still see some value with the series, TJ Rotolo returning as Frank with a script really close to his DR1 depiction would be great, instead of some quip machine that has a comeback every time anyone says anything. Using every day items like a pitchfork or baseball bat is more satisfying to me than supernatural ones, lightsabers are cool, the flaming motorcycle in DR3 is neat, but the battle armor with freeze blast brought in DR4 seems a bit much IMO. Which is weird because lightsabers would be more farfetched.

Franks melee moveset like disembowelment or the jumping head stomp would look nice if updated, If it were annouced for development I don't want it to be a candidate for another Crowbcat video.

You know, I'll always love this franchise. My first experience with it was actually on the wii with chop til you drop, which is kind of like a dead rising coat of paint on resident evil 4. It's a barebones experience, but an interesting novelty to see how they made it work.

I actually have one of the movies, haven't seen it though.

On another note, I actually talk to Lifeseeker, the rapper who's made all those cheesy rap songs about dead rising (the convicts theme, the off the record theme) and he's he's super nice guy and loves the franchise.

I think the reason the lightsaber doesn't bother people like you and me as much as the more ludicrous shit later on is because there's still a thin veneer of fictional logic at work. Gems refract light, a bunch of gems plus a hotwired flashlight could create a laser of sorts, it's really stupid but there's a bit of logic there and if you really hate it you don't have to use it. Most of the combo weapons in 2 at least kind of make sense even if they wouldn't really work in real life. Most of them are just like, duct tape shotgun to rake so you have a shotgun rake. Shit like that.

In Dead Rising 3 you make shit like an explosive hammer by sticking grenades on a sledgehammer and then it somehow doesn't blow Frank up whenever he swings it, or a sword that has magic ice powers because he used an ice pack on a broadsword. Dumb. And the way every goofy franchise goes the further along it gets you see more retarded scifi elements crammed in which makes the world feel less believable and grounded. Power armor sets have no place in Dead Rising, a franchise about flesh eating zombies infesting Midwestern towns. It's retarded to have supersoldiers running around with laser guns, feels like Saints Row, not Dead Rising.

I actually really enjoyed it as well. The guns were satisfying and it was an interesting alternative take on DR1. If the franchise has to come back I honestly wouldn't mind something similar to it, just do DR1 again but a little different, a full-blown remake.

Gone-Guru kicks ass, and His Name's Frank slaps.

The "out there" weapons work better as a bonus post game weapon instead of regular weapons you find in the world. Hell, the more effective weapons like the katana and SMG are hidden to reward exploration.

I mean, things like nailed bat or the machete broom combo made sense and almost feel like weapons you could build in that situation if you had the tools and items required. Some were more out there but a lot of 2's combo weapons felt like things you could realistically build.

Well nice to see this thread brought back form the dead...no pun intended.

I would like to see a remake of the og Deadrising. Have capcom do what they did with the resident evil remakes and have a Deadrising remake do for the 2000's what the REmakes have done for the 90s.

I kinda mention this in the "do you miss the 2000's thread." but Deadrising for me is like the perfect snapshot of that era, sandwiched right between the transition from the early 2000's into the 2010s. What with the tvs being both bulky boxy cathode ray tube tvs and flat plasma screens, Frank's camera being "digital" but still needing to have batteries replaced and not recharged, and just the general feel of the decade is still plastered all over the game.

How would a Dead Rising remake work though? Would it go "serious" or would it remain that sort of over the top cartoony style?

Edit: Speaking of Dead Rising being that perfect snapshot and the TV thing, does anyone remember how much of a big deal the text being made with HD in mind was at the time? I remember on some game forums a lot of people were bitching they couldn't read the text because they weren't able to afford HD TVs at the time lol

I remember it being a bit hard to read on my tube TV but not to the point that I couldn't.

I think by this point a full on reboot of the series and remake of the first game is the best option.

And yeah, it should be a 2000s period piece.

The original Dead rising wasn't as cartoony as its sequels though. The most cartoony you could get out of the game was A, the fight with a crazed clown dual wielding chainsaws, or B having frank wearing a dress and a mega man serve bot mask while having a dead serious discussion on being a photographer and a journalist.

At its core dead rising was a still a dead serious story that satirized everything from consumerism, the food industry, even the then hot topic of the war on terror and security vs privacy in some places. The only entry in the series that actually got just as dark was probabbly 3 which...wow has either aged poorly or impecably well. Depending on how you look at it.

But don't be a member berry heavy "oh yeah that was great remember how great all this cool stuff was back than?" Really point out how that decade (while better than current year) was far from perfect.

When I played DR 3 in the middle of the pandemic, I remember commenting how...interestingly familar and uncomfortably real the setup of DR 3 seems to be with borderline micro chipping of people which turns out to be further governmental control.

Say whatever you want about DR 3, that aspect I will always applaud for being ahead of its time, showing the government messing with people's bodies as understandably a really bad thing. It further shows how it was still made in a time where clown world hasnt set in yet, at least not fully to the point you could still get away with a plotline like that.

The original Dead Rising took itself seriously but in an almost B-movie fashion. The gameplay itself is where a lot of the wackiness existed and that was one of the better parts.

There were definitely some hints of clownworld to come though, the first person you rescue to gain access to a safehouse is a firebrand activist who pretty much forces you to join in the cause.

Like I said the wackiness came from things like the ability to have Frank running around in a mega man helmet and a dress or using am auger to spin a zombie around and have it raining more blood everywhere.

Kinda like how the comedy in the original ghostbusters came from it basically being a bunch of average Joe's taking a "ho hum" approach to dealing with the fantastical setting of fighting ghosts and eventually dealing with potentially the end of the world.

Or throwing food/condiments/drinks at zombies. Or giant teddy bears. Or generally harassing the zombies with toys at all. Or throwing chairs and stuff at them. Or just generally being able to weave through zombies on a skateboard. Or partially neutering hordes by sticking masks on them.

The variety of funny shit you could do despite the seriousness of the situation was pretty broad. It's nice to be able to make your own fun with the game to some extent.

This style of comedy is pretty much a dead art, especially in videogames. Saints Row fell prey to the same cycle of doubling down on the 'wacky' elements until that was all there was, completely ignorant of the fact that the silly elements hit harder because the world is internally consistent and the events taking place are handled somewhat seriously. Everything has to be a Marvel quip fest full of laser guns and violet neon lights now. It's sad and sickening.

Or throwing food/condiments/drinks at zombies.
i have to wonder if being able to throw pies in zombie faces was an intentional reference to the og Dawn of the dead..despite what capcom claimed on the platinum hits copy of the box.

It was a reference but thats it, a reference. The Mall with zombies setting was the only similarity in terms of plot.

Hell, it was settled off court because the judge made it clear that the concept of "zombies on a mall" wasnt copyrighted and there wasnt any other similarity besides that so the prosecution was kind of going to lose. They added that warning as part of that "deal".

For what it's worth, TJ came back as frank in Marvel VS Capcom infinite, that came out after 4.

It’s been said in the past, but the mall music in Dead Rising is fantastic:

Occasionally there were days that I failed missions because I spent too much time listening to the original music soundtrack than actually completing objectives.
Personally I think
is the best one.

Makes ya want to groove.
